Are tattooed fish legal here?

Tanked is entertainment TV, please do not use it for educational purposes.

I like to think of Tanked as a measuring stick for fish keepers, I find that serious, knowledgeable hobbyists can't stand it and not so serious, not quite as knowledgeable hobbyists do.

Also of corse they care about the welfare of the fish they install chillers and make sure the flow is alright

For the types of fish and when they put in fish that will out grow tanks they tell the people that they will have to re home them eventually

So... how do you make a tank suitable for Axolotls and Discus together?

Their show has an impact on fish outside of the show - people take what they say as fact and believe them to be educating, they go and follow the show and ultimately kill their own fish. These guys, IMO, do not care, or they would not be showing people such disgusting ethics. Honestly? The guy's position on how TV =/= education, how Animal Planet shouldn't be education, makes me absolutely livid. And he completely misses how everyone watching Animal Planet believe they're being educated. I absolutely looked up to that channel as a kid and it helped to get me on a path in Aquatics - I fully took what the channel showed as truth, and I believed them to be educational. As does the majority of other people watching it.

They, IMO, could not care less about the fishes' welfare.

I realise that the tattooed fish are not produced in the same manner as 'glow-fish', but I had the notion that they would be lumped in under the same moral ambiguity? I don't know of course but was wondering if people on here did know the legality of bringing something like that into the country.

Loved the Survivor analogy David haha.

Never thought comparisons between that show and fish keeping would be made on here.

Tanked is a show made to appeal to the masses of uneducated hobbyists that want dramatized viewing. Using 'facts' presented on the show seems foolish to me.

I think that tattooed fish are pretty much branded while glow fish are injected (though some pass the trait on to their young)

I don't know much about genetics, but being able to genetically mutate an animal so that it passes the trait onto it's offspring sounds extremely unlikely.

Well...Injected I suppose if you stretch the definition enough to include injecting DNA into the cells. But, no, like others have said, totally different genetic engineering vs squirting ink into them through needles.

The "glow" zebra danios have had some of the DNA from a jelly fish transplanted in their DNA.This is quite different to injecting dye in to the body of a fish.

+1.

Glofish are genetic - the offspring (the Glofish sold in store) are not negatively affected by it (if you don't count "shining bright like a diamond when there's a predator swimming towards you" as negative). Dyed/tattooed fish, however, go through a cruel procedure of being injected with dye, which ends up with high mortality and any surviving fish being extremely prone to stress and disease. They are very different procedures.

I personally don't like Glofish, but it's not necessarily cruel and is typically just regarded as tacky. Glofish, however, are illegal to import in NZ (though there have been some illegally imported before).

How does telling they will have to re home fish make them money

On top of labour they probably charge a certain percentage on top of the price of the tank, equipment and fish. So buying expensive fish will make them more money and rehoming them isn't their problem.

Doesn't answer my question

Well, I don't watch the show, but let's say they buy an asian arowana, it costs them $2000, they charge an additional 20% for sourcing the fish for the client. They basically make a $400 profit. The asian arowana will outgrow the tank in ayear or two, that will be the clients problem. Does that answer your question?

Telling them that doesn't "make them money" but what does is supplying fish that will quickly outgrow the tanks so the tank owners have to re home said fish and then they will buy another one to replace it, more than likely through ATM as well.

Did you read the link I posted? If so why are you still arguing the point?
