Fluval 405 leaking

Hi Guys,

I am setting up a new tank with a used 405.

Filled the tank up yesterday and left it running over night, this morning there is about 3-5 litres not in the tank! (luckily I have the filter sitting in a 60L container incase something like this happend)

It looks as though it is the main seal round the top of the canister that is leaking, rather than the hoses.

Is there anything I can do to easily try and sort this out? (like maybe thread tape or something?)

I have used food grade silicon lubricant on a inline pump that would never seal and kept dripping.

good idea, I was thinking vasaline might work but didnt think that would be a smart move.

Did that sort it out? where did you get it from?

vasaline "should" be ok, many people use it on noisy impeller shafts?

true? I was thinking being petroleum based it would be a bit risky for the fishies?

I got the food lube from work, not sure on the vaseline but it might be ok :dunno:

I use vaseline on the filter seals all the time, helps maintain the rubber as well.

Thought my work might have 'food Lube'

They didn't, but got some vasaline from the dairy instead. Fingers crossed, but seems to be working!

Not necessarily, fish have a much higher standard for what's safe because they're more likeable.

over a long period of time vaseline can damage your rubbers

Unless you have a rubber baby, you need not worry about the effect of Vaseline on your offspring

You really want some Adhesive/Sealant RTV.

Dow Corning make the good stuff.

Not sure if it's typical of Fluval 200-400 series but mine leaked too so I got rid of it. I won't get that design again.

Yea, I had a look elsewhere on the net, and a few people seem to have the same problem. Was only a veeery slow leak though, so the Vaseline sorted it
