flatfish
Red spots, gold spots, and common plecos are all sailfin plecos (Pterygoplichthys species), so called because they have a long (broad-based) and high dorsal (top) fin. :smln:
jamosfish
Sailfin pleco (red spot) - Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps Common pleco (common) - Pterygoplichthys pardalis Gold Spot pleco (gold spot) - Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus To be honest...... I haven't seen any good quaility sailfins in any stores yet. I would love to find a top quaility sailfin with a large sail.
Rabbit
Sailfin pleco (red spot) - Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps This is the species Sailfin typically refers to To be honest...... I haven't seen any good quaility sailfins in any stores yet. Little of the common plec complex are pure, this will be the reason for such average quality. A.PROPHECY
will only take a year to get that big anyway, i found that Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus will get the largest fin on most ocassions, but yer it can vary
Caryl
I would like to hear you all say Pterygoplichthys when drunk :slfg: For those wondering, I believe it is pronounced terry gop lick this :dunno:

Gibbiceps Juvenile Adult Joselimaianus Juvenile Adult A quick Google search reveals quite a few large Dorsal-ed Joselimaianus but from what i sore they are all store bought and with that most likely bred in Singapore where a mix of species are kept in ponds to breed producing hybrids. Li@m
Heres a big one on TM, Its Got a big Dorsal Fin Its "40-50cm" http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/fish/tropical-fish/auction-448512255.htm
flatfish
Have you read that hybrids are produced in Singapore? The larger dorsal fins could easily be the result of selective breeding. If many hundreds of a species are bred in ponds and the breeders select out the better patterned larger finned specimens for the next generation you could very quickly get gibbys with bigger fins or weird colour varients such as chocolate or albino plecos. From what I've seen here red spots and gold spots (the two common high backed sailfins) have very different patterning.
new zealand discus man
Pterygoplichthys & Pleco Types.. :nfs: Pleco have up to 9 rays in dorsal fish and sail fins have more than 9 and up to even 14... Pterygoplichthys i have on trade me as weberi are only smaller type known and at 3 years are just about 20 cm and also the rearest and only comes from the amazon river and collected very seldom by one dealer in Peru There is unlikely to be any others come to nz as know one is prepared to take the large losses in getting wild fish through Quarantine Phillip Collis
henward
I would buy one or two of the weberi, but i am not a breeder. if someone wants a breeding colony i would suggest they go for it. othrewise, i would want it for my pleco comm tank:D if you sell separately, i may be persuaded to IMPULSE buy better do it soon, as i can feel more impulse buys on the way and can only do so many :slfg:
