GrahamC
Just curious as to how much work would be required this tank being sold on TM? http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/fish/fish-tanks-aquariums/auction-440175850.htm I would have access to FSW across the road ... GrahamC
I've got 4 tanks in use at present ranging from 180L to 30L with goldfish and WCMM, then blue gourami + fancy guppies + BN babies, then another with juvenile angelfish that I need to move to a larger tank soon, and then a few Betta splendens which I picked up this week from another member here .... zuri08
ok just wondering.how long have you been keeping fish for?you seem to know an awful lot
GrahamC
I started with my first goldfish in October. After losing a couple, I decided I needed to learn a bit more before I killed anymore! :smln: So, anything I say has to be taken with a grain of tonic salt. spoon
id say ditch the cannister filters and buy a decent hang on back skimmer and it wouldnt be too bad but that could depend on wether the tank has any nastys like bad algae or pest anemones which could make it a bit harder to maintain
rosco
Considering hes been running no skimmer means hes probably got algae from narm, probably has phosphates and silicates soaked through all of his rock. Which would slowly leech into whatever setup you would wanna run. IMO  also like what spoon said canister filters on a marine spell disaster, he hasnt researched alot obviously, I feel sorry for the poor fish and coral. GrahamC
Ahh..helpful. And he says he has a skimmer but is not using it.
Sophia
I started with my first goldfish in October. 4 tanks since October - I would call that Rapid Onset Multi Tank Syndrome :slfg: :happy2:
GrahamC
It's actually worse than that ...I have another 10L tank that I can use for a hospital tank though it was originally intended for some experimentation, another 170L tank that is sitting in storage in my new office, and I am about to commission a much larger tank for my office. So, a more accurate description would be Rapid Onset and Progressive Multi-Tank Syndrome ( ROPMTS ) :sml1:

#!CrunchBang
I would build from scratch and do it properly with a 200-300L tank + sump, skimmer and LED lighting etc. Make it a learning process, $3k is a good budget to do it with. GrahamC
Sounds like a long term project fraught with danger!
livingart
about as much danger as taking apart and resetting up a marine tank
CodKing
about as much danger as taking apart and resetting up a marine tank Heh, + (great big fat) 1!
Zev
Probably more stress and aggravation resetting a poorly maintained tank - since there is existing livestock it has to be done quickly and there is little margin for error. How much work to maintain the existing tank? This depends on the condition of the rock in the first place, if it is riddled with unwanted organisms and nitrate/phosphate, then it may take some constant attention to get it to a fairly stable state. Also try and avoid the ph altering additives that go with the tank, there are better ways to stabilise the water. At least starting from scratch you know what you are getting and don't have to work around what is already existing, and you can take your time to get all the parameters right before you even attempt to start stocking it with fish that you have researched well and chosen for yourself. GrahamC
So, I wonder what this guy who is moving to Oz is going to do with all his corals if he can't sell them? I guess the nearest LFS that has marine stock would be in Hastings ....
Nick
If it were me and wanted to buy it I would do this. Build a new tank Buy good live rock No sandbed Use the lights, filter etc Move corals over Sell the tank and cabinet to help pay for the new tank
