  11. worried about the replcament filters and the ease of getting them, wanted something local
  12. anyone using this one? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=449609328 found it on the net and hes local, im currently getting 100 tds water outta my tap and really wanna get 0 tds water in my tank and not tap crap. let me know if anyone can recommend em, otherwise will get one soon and post up how it goes also
  13. all correct except for the fact you shouldnt need a skimmer, dont need lights. Just circulation, correct sg of salt in the water and temperature. There isnt any proteins in the water ie no fish food or fish or waste, you can throw a bit in to kick if off like half a shrimp from your supermarket help the bacteria along then you could throw in your skimmer if you want. but not necessary.
  14. Ive always gone with dead dry rock, 1. It comes pest free 2. you know its not leeching nitrates or phosphates into your system 3. you can drill it and tie it all together for the shapes you want 4. if you have a bit of time to cycle it then that will be perfect for you, you go through all the stages of algal blooms but if you wanna keep it clean keep the lights off but IMO just get it running get the lights on it let it do its thing, you cant come out with something spectacular under 6 months it all takes time.
  15. its a green bubble coral my lighting is set up with more white than any actinics or other spectrum and just t5's so dont get alot of colour popping out but get great growth and corals love it. My clown (sharkbait) is starting to host in it, Which I dont really want but not getting an anemone only had bad experience with them.
  16. Just a few new shots, I really need a better camera but here you go for those following my thread. Got myself a wikid new yellow tang an awesome specimen med size, bit of an update on how the tanks going. Heres the new kid on the block wasnt cheap by any means either lol Feeling at home now and swimming really well Even getting a clean and service from mr Shrimp Full tank shot Heading back in for his service Sharkbait Lawnmower blenny having his service And again... what an amazing shot thou shame bout the quality Growth on the pink birdsnest has increased heaps Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  17. Do your research first, it helps to have owned a tropical fw before as it helps you with getting to terms with water chemistry. In marines you have to keep good chemistry to give things the best life possible while in your care. If not your looking into the wrong hobby. Otherwise if your willing to spend the money, research a hell of alot and provide your marine life with a good quality of life then well start here.... http://www.youtube.com/user/newyorksteelo?feature=g-all-u#p/u thats what I have done along with alot of other research on others have done but you cant go wrong with this guys approach but start at his early videos, very informative and I have mine set up very similar to his and never had any problems. :nilly: cheers and goodluck.
  18. Considering hes been running no skimmer means hes probably got algae from narm, probably has phosphates and silicates soaked through all of his rock. Which would slowly leech into whatever setup you would wanna run. IMO  also like what spoon said canister filters on a marine spell disaster, he hasnt researched alot obviously, I feel sorry for the poor fish and coral.
  19. Hi sophia i just checked out heaps of you tube vids on how to do it, heres one to start you off: heaps of diff ways to do it, I just run the hose on it constantly outside. goodluck
  20. wont be the shrimp bro, just be the fact someone just took em out of the setup they liked into something they have to now adjust too differently, is the lighting setups differ greatly? can take them awhile to get used to that
  21. ok well I know they dont require a lot of light so i wouldnt put em at the top smack bang under a halide so put em at the bottom of your tank and then slowly bring them higher up if u want them up higher in tank over the period of say 3-4days or even a week they might be in a little shock they wont be used to halide id imagine. just my opinion
