piggyvir
Hi there - I bought a bonsai like Corokia and planning to turn that into a chrimstas moss tree. Is it appropriate? I know that pine is not an appropriate drift wood material, but what about corokia? I want to do something like this?? http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/f6/co ... 50300.html
Brennos
that is very cool. I'm tempted to get me a small (60x30x30) tank and try it.
phoenix44
Getting the moss looking like that is the easy part. Finding wood like that is the hard part. :tears: I'd love to do it. Someone find me wood like that
Brennos
I can't help regarding the wood piggy, but I am definatly keen to try this. If i can source a decent tank for not much money, I will attempt it. I have a t8 light hood, and 2 clip on 6500k light bulbs, just need a hob filter or something like that. And the wood of course. si_sphinx
I have a piece of wood but the trunk is probably too thick The tree stump I had here in this tank... http://fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=39179&start=135&sid=dd377832bb31b4615a80a529927ca06d But probably not quite right though...? supasi
Go to the beach. Heaps of wood to be found there. Anyone in the areas of NZ who have had recent flooding should be able to find wood along their beaches in the next month or so. Pine is fine if it is totally dried. It just rots faster than native Hardwoods do. Lets have a Xmas moss tree competition.
Brennos
Moss Competition sounds awesome. I have emailed greg about a tank, $45. I have lights, all i need is a filter, and obviously some wood. of to Maraetie over the next few days.

piggyvir
oh my god !! that tank is awesome looking... I bought this from Mitre 10 this morning I am just wondering whether I can turn this into a moss tree ! Should I boil it then sun dry? Zev
I do not know about the toxicity either, but looking at the link the piece of wood looks to me like the root structure of a plant, not the bit above the ground.
supasi
I dont think that Corokia will be woody enough. Maybe a dried branch or as Zev said, a root. Good luck, you have inspired me and many others so dont be surprised if others attempt this.
piggyvir
Thanks for the feedback... I will keep on my wood hunting !! I just think it will be a cool project

piggyvir
but is it true that to turn the dried branches to drift wood, you MUST boil it?
livingart
manuka root works well also old gorse root

piggyvir
really?? Gorse root?! but can you just dig up the gorse in the middle of nowhere? Can someone please confirm/let me know that is boiling a MUST requirement to turn normal wood into drift wood??
Zev
If they are dried I do not think you have to boil it, but it may help make it sink. Phoenix44 put some 'nice red' branches in his tank once that were fresh off a tree, if I recall correctly they went furry and he took them out not long afterwards. If you are going gorse hunting, it may pay to ask permission from the land owner first and ascertain that they have not been sprayed with herbicide or anything else that may not be too good for your tank. And I forgot to say previously - you are not going to kill that poor little native bush are you?
