Nicolette
Loving this thread...Thankyou all so much for the lessons... Mine?... 1. Check breeding tank very carefully for eggs before doing a water change. Then check again just to be sure. 2. Never let children buy a couple of little fish for the community tank with their non aquarium addicted parent. 3. Catching fish with 2 nets is WAY easier and less stressfull on the fish than using one net. (Lost 2 fish before I figured this one out) 4. Ph kits may only measure up to 7.4ph but tap water can be a lot higher than that.
me love fishy
Killifish can eat neons too, well try to. Plug heater back in after water changes. some lfs people don't know what they are talking about Harlequin rasboras can jump.

me love fishy
oh and one I forgot When you are just browsing and can't afford to buy there will be heaps of fish you would like to buy, but when you are out on a mission to get some new fish, there will be none you like. Alan
Dont get distracted when using a 1000watt immersible heater, even if it is in a 6' tank. One way of getting rid of the pacus I suppose but it hurt.
Janelle
Some additions... Never assume you can stop at one tank. If you have a school of fish (white clouds) and you notice one is sick, remove it *before* it dies in an obscure corner of the tank, decomposes, and kills all the fry in the same tank. In addition to that, if you don't remove a sick fish then come back and can't find it again, it's wiser to assume it has died and do a THOROUGH search of the tank just to be sure instead of tricking yourself into believing that it's one of the happy-perky ones still swimming around in your tank. firenzenz
Don't start to do something on a tank because 'it'll only take a minute', especially when you're on the way out the door to a wedding, ( I thought the suit was too formal anyway) Don't add new driftwood and heater to your tank then go away for the weekend. Come home to wood soup. Don't buy one fish on impulse, only to find it won't like or live with any other fish you own. Don't under estimate the mouth size of your Nimbo-Fusco.Poor not so little Electra.
Raven1
Have a Q tank for new fish. Don't believe everything your told at lfs. Research fish before adding them to your tank.
mr pleco
Re Mr Pleco Did you really learn all those lessons the hard way? Cuz it sounds a bit harsh all that lessons were learnt by one person. over 25 years of doing fish yep ive learned them all
Barrie
when daughter has about 50 baby guppys in a tank and another lot arrive, dont tell your wife that you've put the guppy fry in with your King Killis... she talks and dobs me in

bdspider
I haven't had any major problems but... Siamese fighters die when you do water changes with too cold water. I also learnt a good lesson: Siamese fighters miraculously come back to life when put back in warmer water!
wilson
are you back in nz bd oh and never let your brothers girlfriend near the tank
stargazer
Read, read, and read about cycling your tank, it will save you much frustration, and fish and money so you can get a 2nd tank sooner
Nicolette
and a final lesson learnt today... I absolutely CANNOT go to my LFS without buying a fish or fish tank accesory...sigh. I think in future I will let the Mr go and buy the rabbit and chicken food so I am not so tempted.... Yeah right.
David R
Despite how it looks, that fish CAN fit in its mouth... and if it cant he's still gonna try!
me love fishy
Obviously a lesson I didn't learn properly the first time Air hoses will siphon water out of your tank if disconnected from the air pump!
Fluffypants
Hide ALL fish food from the person who is looking after your fish. Even after strict instructions to feed measured amounts they still feel sorry for fish and 'just a little bit more'. Result....high phosphate If a new betta is sulking in the corner.....leave it to sulk Work mates aren't as interested in photos of the lastest purchase as you are  Fish are addictive
je_suis_ketan
Fish are addictive  I totally agree, just when you buy some fish and think right no more, the next day you start thinking about the next addition
reef
when buying gear for your tank, buy the best not cheap crap, or you'll just end up replacing it. Very good point, Been telling Hobbyist that for years however its like talking to a brick wall and they have to find out the hard way.
