    KP's Tank Build

Nice tank KP. Keep up the good work
  2. its about the same size as a stream, except some of the pump is on the outside of the tank. Photos should give you a good idea of size.
  3. They are however the controls are not out yet. i really dont think you need them as the flow is allover the place anyway. A controller would be good if it could turn pumps down at night and allow feedmode.
  4. I think the flow is about 15000L/H. It is a a soft sort of flow. the water comes out wide so it does not direct the water in one direction like a powerhead or stream. The noise is like a propeller sound. you have to listen for yourselve. All in all with all the other tank noise it is not that bad. The pump gets hot like cup of coffee. but having the pumps outside means no heat in the tank.
  5. Well you put down a stupid comment about closed loops about 1 day latter to create a reaction. go ahead ,who cares what you want to do. another statement to create a reaction
  6. Great advice from a novice. this is a vortech post so if you want to discuss other methods start your own post.
  7. 35 watt of power per pump is great and 12v. who needs closed loops that could leak.
  8. cost me about $550 a pump
  9. Now the big questions. Which is better? There is no better just depends what you want and how much money you have spare. the vortech cost more than a stream 6100.
  10. Sure is more flow, but different type. The streams are more directional with a small v. The vortech starts off really with a big V and is more even spread. You need less vortech pumps to get the same flow from the streams. Might be able to do the same with the streams if you cut off the front tube.
  11. You cant adjust the angle , however there is No need to adjust the angle. the flow coming out is very wide. You can keep coral not far away from it and they dont blow away.
  12. I starting to get happy as the current is pretty amazing. The sound actually is not that bad, With the streams the motor is in the water so it softens the sound. You would be amazed at the flow.
  13. Installed 3 vortech pumps on the weekend. Nice looking pumps. After switching them on the tank looks like a washing machine. great current. Bit worried about the sound but starting to live with it. They do a nice job and i only have 3. did not have to put in the 4th. Dont ask how much as here are some pics.

    tang vs stream

Found the steams to be pretty safe. however looking at the blue tang it looks like he is very skinney and is on his way out, any tang that size would have no problems getting away from a stream if they where healthy. had over 6 streams in my tank and no one fish got stuck. some of my tangs used to like being stuck by the stream and just pull away when they wanted.

    Coral Feeding

But is that not the same with BB, there is also little warning of no nutrients in the tank so acros start to eat themselves. If a sand bottom tank was failing would you not notice it over a few weeks as acros start to lose colours. What benefits would Steve weaste and Iwans tank have if they had no sand? Can there tanks get better.

    Coral Feeding

No one will have there tank long enough to find out
  19. Ok, update on my calcium reactor, Since i put a bigger inlet pump on my reactor my cal/kh have been perfect. KH of 11 and calcium of 420ppm. The media is disolving fast and will have to top it up. Note i dont have a standard calcium reactor so this will not work for other Reactors. Yahoo no additional cal/buffer to add every week.

    Coral Feeding

In terms of having sand in a tank can it attract dirt thus keeping the water clean. Try it, stir your sand hard and overnight the water is clean.

    Coral Feeding

I dont have time to clean the main reef everyday. so the sand is very useful as it stays clean. Yes it does have waste but that is how the nutrient cycle works. you need dirt. Sure we do, just many people dont turn up as they have better things to do. Next meeting is due shortly.

    Coral Feeding

I run my tank with sand and attached are two 4ft tanks with BB. The reef looks great and the BB tanks look always dirty. i only clean them once in a while. I stir my sand once a week which feeds corals. Also noticed that when you stir the sand the tank goes cloudy then it is crystal clear after a day. No sure why that is the case. Cant do that with a BB tank Gobies are great for keeping the sand clean.
