  1. Hard to tell, could be brown jelly disease. make sure it is getting good flow., . i doubt the brittle star will do anything to corals. Tank looks like it has lots of nutrients as i can see lots of algae. did you check the water conditions? what are the readings? ca kh po4 nitrate.
  2. also no light for 2-3 days woks well,
  3. Overview Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic algae closely related to bacteria. Cyanobacteria have a few different forms in the marine aquarium; dark blue/green, velvet red, and brown. It is thought that cyanobactera are among one of the oldest known lifeforms on earth with some fossil records of up to 3.5MYA. You may have seen on the news or first person that some parts of the ocean looking completely red, or blue green. These cyanobacteria blooms are a major problem for our environment, however they only happen when there is a huge nutrient resource for the cyanobacteria to grow. It is not known why some aquaria have problems with cyanobacteria and others don't. While those that do often have high nutrient levels, many aquaria have cyanobacteria without elevated nutrients and other aquaria with elevated nutrients don't have problems. It is generally not desirable to have Cyanobacteria in your aquarium as it is often unsightly and few organims eat it. It may continue to grow if the proper measures aren't taken to remove it. In newly setup aquariums its a common occurence. There are a number of ways you need to attack the cause of the issue. Removal Techniques Reduce nutrient input - feed less. Cyano loves fish poo Increasing water flow on the particular area that it is growing; It will find it harder grow in high current areas. Good flow is essential to any tank and often the existence of this Cyano is a sign. Increase skimming; skimmers are often an effective way of removing some of it's nutrient sources. Prevents some of it's nutrient sources from growing due to the removal of Dissolved Organic Compounds (DOCs) Reduce the amount of time the lights are on. If you have no light dependant animals (photosynthetic), remove the light source completely until the bacteria appears to have subsided Large water changes; removes the nutrient source. Preferably combined with: Siphoning the cyanobacteria out. This is not recommended if you have a deep sand bed (DSB), however you can still syphon it off rocks etc. Often a combination of a couple of methods is the quickest and most effective way of removing it.

    Hermit Crabs

Work had been done 3 years ago to add them, however might take another 3 years for MAF to make it a priority.

Because it wont work, a bit like put your hand up if you have added any new fish/coral to the MAF list. It is not that simple.
  6. They eat clams. knock over corals, and grow big, best for a large fish only tank,

    Hawaii Legislature

who is going to pay for it?? It is happening but the end result is that they cost far more as it take time to grow and you have to pay someone. lots of overheads.

True, same problem in Nz , stock is too cheap. in fact some fish/coral are cheaper in NZ than the USA.

http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov:80/sessio ... B3225_.htm http://www.seashepherd.org/editorials/e ... 14_1p.html The end is near, pretty bad on how much stock is taken from the Ocean. However it must be noted that what comes in NZ is like a needle in a hay stack. What we import in a year is what the USA along imports every hour. Not sure on how the long term outlook is but already it is becoming hard to get certain fish. If anyone what a black tang , i can spare one at $2000

Only a few fish can be breed, 90% of fish are wild caught. When breed fish are available hobbyist dont want to pay the prices. So the future does not look great unless you want a tank full of clownfish.
  11. Cyno is a sign of nutrients in the tank. Also seems to like the hot temperatures during summer. Like everything in reef keeping things don’t get better overnight. Many organics will still be in the rocks and slowing releasing back in the tank. Your po4 levels are still high and lower levels would be better like .03 As a short term remedy you can turn off your tank lights for 2-3 days. This will not harm the corals. When you turn you lights back on the cyno will be gone. Take it easy on the reef solution as this can cause excess cyno due to the iron and minerals in the product, i normally only dose it once a week. Avoid frozen foods as this adds lots of po4 back in the tank. Sounds like you are doing the correct things so just be patient.

In general you will see change taking place in the industry as it cant contine at the rate it is being collected. You can get corals form hawaii.
  13. some info. Long time overdue. Make the most of marines as in the future it will be harder to get stock and very expensive.
  14. some updated photos of the marine section at Hollywood in Albany.

  19. what about Chaetodontoplus melanosoma) Pomacanthus imperator Pomacanthus annularis Pomacanthus navarchus
  20. Getting a anemoe in that small tank with the Tunze nano pumps could be a problem. I find that anemoes seem to always find the pumps and the nanos can cause damage.
  21. 20ds are so cheap these days. Its the lenses that dont seem to drop in price.
