  2. Thanks guys Ira wrote: As I said, I know nothing about making things. So, know nothing about cinder blocks; therefore, hehe, I wasn't sure if putting something between them would make them, ah, maybe uneven would have been a better word to use :-? :-? 3. Ok, ok, ok oh ok...I HAVE A CANISTER FILTER :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Fluval 405 I was able to get one of the last ones they had on promotion for $199 (Canadian) including a 50' Aqua Vac. I did a bit more browsing reading reviews on the Fluval 405 and as you can expect different views. Even the manager at the store spoke of the Eheim (spelled wrong?) but they don't sell them soooo. He even opened it to show me when I told him I'd never seen one except in pictures. I'm so excited. Soon as I got home I looked at the DVD, read the manual last night. But don't let that fool you  , I'm sure I'll still have lots of questions when I go to set it up. I'm working on getting stand so not ready to set up yet AND big thank you to my kids for the gift cards for the pet store, with the purchase of the filter and other items they are now depleated. 4. I was just browsing the web and came across a cool looking stand made with cinder blocks. http://virtuallyamy.wordpress.com/2008/ ... ium-stand/ I have a couple of questions, I posted them to the site but don't know if they are still replying, anyway I'd always check with you folks. AND you must know by now I haven't a clue when it comes to making things! 1) Doesn't plywood come in different thicknesses? If so, what would you suggest? (this would be for my 55 gallon, 4' tank) 2) I don't know off hand how high I would like the stand. But what would your best recommendations be, 3 high or 4 high, or just a personal preference? 3) Would putting the 2 shelves between the cinder blocks make it unsteady? 4) One person, instead of using the plywood for the shelves used shelving, what do you think of this? 5) There is a picture showing the sides where you can see the 2x4's. Would they not all have to sit right on the cinder blocks, looks like the last one isn't but I could just be tired and not seeing right :-? 6) Styrofoam under tank or not???? Thanks, Caper
  5. Canada you say...where??? I love the look of sand, don't use it. But I think it looks really nice in a tank, keep us posted as to what you decide. Besides all the help you'll get on this site this is a good help too: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/videos/cleaning_sand.php Caper

I know each fish can be different but I always thought that was one of the reasons you folks kept them because they were noted for alge eating. Ah, learn something new everyday! Caper

  10. Yep, they are doing just fine Mel. When I first put the "new" Sam in, Beauty did a bit of chasing but I think it was more of "who are you" Sam is now out and about most of the time and Beauty doesn't seem to bother. Caper
  11. Ah, so I was right Silva...MTS has taken over   :bounce: Caper
  12. Ira wrote: So does that mean you cannot put it in the tank frozen. I've wondered about that before as I have frozen brine shrimp. I just take a bit of tank water out in a small container and let it thaw that way. But I wasn't sure about frozen vegies like cucumbers and zucchini. Caper
  13. As aaron said, keep doing the water changes. The goal is to have your ammonia reading 0. Caper
  14. Hmmm, people against bristlenoses that is interesting. I can't get them here but from all I read on here they are a good fish to keep, peaceful and such. It will be interesting to see what replies you get. Caper
  15. Hi & welcome! You'll get lots of advice here and find out where to get a variety of fishies. Take care & have fun, Caper
  16. Hi & welcome! Good luck with your store. We have 2 new pet stores open here just recently and both keep fish...YAH!!!! Previously we just had a dept. store but they no longer keep fish, so I'm hoping that these stores will be a success. Unfortunately, in the past pet stores didn't make it here, I don't know if they couldn't compete with the dept. stores or what. Anyway, best of luck with yours. Take care & have fun, Caper
  17. Hi & welcome! I don't have any betta's but from what I read so far, as others have said, they may not go well with guppies. Post pics sometime. Take care & have fun, Caper

  21. A stable pH is better for the fishies than one that is constantly changing. Caper
