  1. We had a visitor last week, so took the opportunity to go for a nighttime bushwalk. We like going down the creek to surprise people with a glo-worm grotto when we all shut our lights off. On our way down this time, we got a surprise and found a little eel in the pool! :bounce: We were telling another friend, and they were like "NO! How could an eel get all the way up there?!" We are at about 300M elevation, and there are some big waterfalls to get up... Well, I didn't know how to answer that! Anyone? and do they eat mainly fish, or koura too? Thanks in advance!
  2. I logged on intending to search for that "post your pics" thread but then saw this at the top o the page, and tought it'd do Snapped on our way home from the weekend at Colville, on the motorway ... I figured with those plates, it Must belong to one of you?!

    Macro ID

I would be glad to! On other forums I am able to, but I don't see where here... how do I embed pics on this forum? I think I used to directly post here, but have had problems posting pics since the "new look/forum update"

    sea grass

there is a pic of some seaweed in this other thread. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34648 I never did really get a good ID, but have since spotted it growing on rocks at my beach nearby. It did not become a nuisance & is still growing well, and I only have a basic set up... no special lighting. Also, I had weighted down a piece of kelp; the kind that has wide blades, and quite ruffled. It just had one blade and some small roots. It doesn't need weighing down because the roots attached themselves and it has grown!
  5. Thanks carznkats! And YES!! we need an update and more pics of your ponies!!!! :bounce:
  6. Oh Whetu, that is just terrible! ( and for all of the others with break-in/ripoff/vandal/horror stories too) Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  hehe, I like Lukes idea wouldn't it be great to catch the rotten$#@!s and .... I dunno.... give em a reason to care? about anything? It is just too hard to understand how some people don't have any sense of right & wrong...or absolutely don't care about anything at all. how depressing I don't go walking at one of my favourite coastal spots any more because someone keeps smashing windows.... I wonder if they would still smash them out of spite, even if we left the car unlocked with no valuables left inside. But from Whetus 1st post, it sounds like they might strip it for anything?! indicators, seatbelts.. who knows what...
  7. Thanks, but hopefully they will come to their senses before that is neccessary! LOL, pehaps just mention of this thread will help speed them along...
  8. Everyones face is different, so in addition to looking at cost, the best thing is for each person is to try different masks on. There is nothing more annoying & distracting than having to constantly clear a leaking mask, especially for beginner snorkellers! Without putting the straps on, just put the mask up to your face and then breathe in. A good fitting mask should just suck on up & seal to your face easily, and not have any leaks. Make sure there are no hairs in the way to break the seal. A small/low volume mask is always easier to clear if you do get water in, and makes less squeeze on your eyeballs when you do dive down. Have a great time!
  9. That is such a groovy  discovery man! psychedelic.... last time I looked, there was some video of it at the bottom of this page...http://www.sciam.com/blog/60-second-science/post.cfm?id=meet-psychedelica-a-new-species-of-2009-02-27
  10. Great shots everyone! wish I knew how to use & had a decent camera....
  11. We got 150+mls!! and did you read about the boats for the fishing comp that filled up with rain & sank?! I guess the rain came in very localised bombs! Batten down the hatches for the next storm! I think it has arrived already...
  12. LOL, that is hilarious! and Donna, I thought at 1st you'd changed your screen-name, but then realised new Milo was a kitten... I still have your Milo's photo on my puter My dog likes all sorts of veggies, especially chewing on broccoli stalks like a bone... but Puriri moths are probably the weirdest thing. green dog lollies!
  13. LOL  Isn't that partly WHY we keep aquariums in our lounges???!!!.... hubby watches whatever garbage he likes, and I occassionally nod & reply "uhhuh" to his comments, and I carry on watching my seahorses! LOL * but I do get the odd good laff outta Coro St.
  14. so it was probably already obvious I'm a total seahorse nut!  and embarasssingly so if you see the item I bid on, LOL  and yes, I got ripped off on TradeMe It was originally "pick-up" only, but I did ask and the seller did agree to ship, but now they can't be bothered to go to Mainfreight to deliver it (mainly because they've already spent all the money!) so it's looking dubious that I'll get a refund... but I believe they still have the item... it is not a real seahorse, but one for my "playground" Is there a fellow fishforumite in Christchurch who could pick it up & ship if I pay for fuel & shipping?

    Nursery tubs

Thanks guys. yah, I like the ordinary opaque tubs just fine, having used rubbish bins etc. in an emergency! But am just enquiring about those specific ones for a friend who is searching for them. they look to be Kiwi made? I swear the rectangular ones look just like our recycle bins!

    Nursery tubs

Does anyone know where to source tubs like these, used by the Seahorse Farm in Napier? As seen in the back issue of NZ Aquaculture, page six, Volume 7, September/October 2005. http://www.nzaquaculture.co.nz/AQUACULTURE%2007.pdf
  18. Yow! glad to hear you came away nearly unscathed reminds me of the time I ordered a power supply for my supercool thermoelectric 12V chillers... wired it all up, and turned it on... blammo! sparks n smoke! I then found out there was a teensytiny switch to choose between 110/240
