  1. WOW cool Raven. As you can see I am in invercargill also but still new lol moved here 2 yrs ago
  2. OOOOOOOO I would love some! Just done a search to see what it looked like and it would go awesome in my guppy tank to help save the babies from the big adult mouths!! I know you said floating but is it able to be submerged and attached to driftwood?? or rocks??
  3. I didn't think that anyone else lived down this way Where abouts are you Raven?? I would help you out Maxy but I also only have the one tank and its not as big as your current one and I don't have any spare parts to lend you either untill you got your second tank set up. I sure hope that you can get a sitter sorted or something. Good Luck and let me know how you get on

    CO2

thanks a heap for that great info I did a pH test this morning and it hasn't changed (touch wood) my tank usually sits at 7.0pH and max it has gotten is 7.5pH so hopefully it won't affect the fish too dramaticly.

    CO2

well I got a fluro light which is in the hood above the tank. The Co2 has stoped working as I think I didn't mix it up properly (water not warm enough to fully activate the yeast) but I will keep trying with it and look into getting another bottle and make the hole smaller. My tank isn't completly sealed as it has holes to allow for the cords and the bubbles are going straight to the surface but the bubbles were comming out really slowly so I thought that even tho most were just dissapearing that there would still be a small amount getting into the water. I don't use Fertalisers in my tank as its just a bit to much $$ at present and the only reason for why I tried the Co2 is because there was a home DIY version. Otherwise I wouldn't of bothered. But I will keep going this way (but seal it better) and see how it goes for a week. Everything is always trial and error just hope there isn't to much errors
  7. sorry I can't help maxy as I have no idea. I so hope that it comes right. The one bad side about fish keeping is watching them die even after you have done all you can.

    CO2

Well I think my Co2 is going to work which is a big but its still early days yet. All I done was get a 2ltr soda bottle, drilled a hole in the top to the size of the air tubing (husband done that part hehe). Inserted the tube and put a good blob of plumbers putty (like blue tac but extra sticky) and put a 15x25mm airstone on the end and droped it in the tank. Gave the bottle a bit of a shake up to start the flow and bobs ya uncle The plumbers putty isn't working to well as a proper seal so I am going to try some hot glue tomorrow (hot glue gun) and see how that seals it. If that don't work then I will nick some of the hubbies silicon as that should do the job and create a good seal. The yeast method I used (from net) is 2 cups sugar, 1/2 teaspoon yeast and about a 1.5 ltrs of warm water (to activate the yeast). I took some pictures last night of my tank and will take another one at the end of the week and see what results I have (if any) Fingers crossed
  9. I have a piece of driftwood in my tank. I picked it up off the beach about a year ago and just kept it because I liked it but it ended up living in the wash house on a shelf. I put it in a bucket of water for a week then in my tank held down with two large quartz rocks. It did change the colour of my water slightly but nothing too dramitic. No dead fish, apart from dropsy (one fish only) and one deformed guppy whos tail was dropping and giving him a real bad back. Wasn't sure if it was from TB or not but had more than one sympthom to say it was. But yeah if soaked long enough as said in previous post you should be fine

    CO2

Wow maxy you got a large tank! My tank is only 90ltrs. As of tonight I am trying a yeast Co2 system to see how it goes for a week. I should take a before and after picture of the tank I guess to show a difference in plant growth (if it works). BTW maxy what fish do you have in your tank?? I am looking at selling/trading some baby guppies in a couple of months. I don't think that east rd will accecpt my babies even if they were to be free and I don't want to cull them just because of over stock.

    CO2

lol yeah At present I don't have anything to difuse the Co2. But I am able to hook it up to 1 or 2 small ceramic, fine bubble airstones. Would it be better to use both (one at each end of the tank) or just the one at one end of the tank?? Thanks a heap for your info so far on this.

    CO2

I was just looking into it as a once a month boost for my plants. Most of the articles I have been reading today state that the yeast method last from 10-14 days and some up to 3 weeks. I am not really interested in running Co2 24/7 at present but just wanting to give my plants once a month if not once every two months in case they are not getting enough from the tank as it is. My plants are all cuttings so none of them have actually established yet (maybe 1-2 have good rooting system on them). So basicly I am just wanting to give them a booster like a vitamin C tablet does to us humans BTW my husband is a plumber so I can get him to make up my Co2 container easily (at least hes good for something hahahah)

    CO2

so if I was to do the DIY Co2 yeast method once a month (artical I read says it will last from 10-14 days before needing to be replaced) would that be enough?? So basicly there is no way I can kill my guppies by adding Co2 to the tank?
  14. I am wanting to look at getting a long but not high tank which I can divide into 3 sections. I was thinking of getting the fabric that is used for bridal vails and was wondering with this fabric or similar would I be able to get away with one heater and one filter for the whole tank instead of one for each section?? This is for my guppy tank.

    CO2

I was just looking up a DIY Co2 yeast setup and as I was talking to my husband about it he said wouldn't it cause more harm to the fish? How can I be sure that I don't have a bad balance of Co2 and Oxygen to harm the fish?? I don't want to put Co2 in there and have it over run the oxygen balance and kill my fish. Expecially while I got babies (had them this morning ) How can I be sure that using this setup won't do more harm than good. I have been adding new plants every couple of weeks due to others dying off so I want to fix this problem also but being a newbie to all this is really confusing at the same time. Cheers

    CO2

hmmm guess thats something I need to look into also. I have also been told that at night when the lights go out that the plants sleep and during this time (untill first light again) the plants acutaly asorb oxygen and release Co2. I could be totaly wrong but thats what I was told or read somewhere. How is Co2 set up and how expensive is it? Is there other alternitives that would do similar things to plants?
  17. The shop that I go to I have never seen that sort of breeding box that your talking about. I am assuming its the one that you can see in the previous pictures in this thread?? But as I said I dont' want to stress the fish or I will end up with nothing. In these pictures you will see the female I am talking about. Sorry that the images are crap but with a new born bubs its hard to take good pics when you are deprived of sleep hehehehehe. You may totaly be right that when the babies are born they could have black eyes. I don't know but at present I cant' see black eyes. She has two little black spots which don't look consitant with eyes as my other guppies have these same black specks. Here are a couple of pics. Also is the male that I am hoping to breed with a 1/2 black female and with this golden female. Colours should be interesting Cheers
  18. I am not out to keep a huge batch of fry which is why I leave the female guppy in the main tank and hope that a small amount (up to a dozen) survive. I have just noticed lately and with your post got me thinking that I should be having more drops than what I am currently getting but I also remembered that most of my guppies seem to drop during the night so if they are then I will never know really. The main one that I am waiting for seems to be carrying albino fry as her spot is bright orange and you can see the individual fish (bellies I am guessing) are bright orange/red in colour as seperate little balls but there is no black to be seen with the eye colour. This fish has black eyes tho which is why I am very interested in keeping an eye on her and she has my curiousity caught on to as what colour the fry will turn out to be. I have a breeding net that I can attach to the side of the tank but I don't want to stress her out by putting her in there to soon. I will try and get a photo of her so you can see for yourself. Still very interesting info. Cheers
  19. Don't remind me about nappies. I got them allllll over the place at the moment with my newborn pooping all the time lol Some times wished I was a fish. Then I can just leave the babies to fend for themselves hahaha
  20. awesome pics there and very informative. I have gone from tropical flakes to the livebearer flakes with tubifex worms included in the one tub and I noticed that I use a lot less of this stuff than the tropical flakes as its already grounded up to good size. I have currently got 5 guppies in my tank and thought with that amount I would be having fry every two weeks but it seems like almost a month and only one has had fry. There is two males in there and I am not to sure at what point the fry are able to have babies themselves. All my guppies have that green shimmer to them (females mainly) which you said was healthy so I guess that if they were like that then there can't be much wrong with the water or environment. How can I increase my fry output?? I have two guppies that I really want some fry from. I don't quite have the $$$ to experment with food like you have. Still congratulations on ALL your babies
  21. I done a search on "ribbon tail guppy" and it was a picture search via google and it showed what I think to be what they are after with the extra long fins and things. They look very pretty and very different and as you say I think the males would be useless as their gono's are to long.
  22. if I was to get anything from chch it would take me 6-7 hrs travel to get them home and into the tank. I think thats a little tooo far for the little fishies
  23. Hi there and welcome aboard from friendly Invercargill. It took me a while to figure out what lfs stood for also. Very friendly bunch of people here so I am sure you will find lots of help when you need it

    Greetings

ummm I got to ask is the 30 tanks because you are a breeder and stock the shops or are you a shop on your own?? Out of interest what do you have in the 30 tanks? hehehe stack them all together and you could re wall your bathroom with tanks. Now that would be cool. Be like sitting in a huge tank
