Go for it, the fish enjoy them as a snack. As far as the shells of them are concerned, my cichlids grab the whole morsel, chew several time, spit the lot out, then quickly tear in and get the meater bits before its jealous tankmates can benefit from his work.

I'm no sparkie, but when I have a failute on any of my doubles, the other carries on working. Hope that is of some use.

Have any of you G's and G's seen the prices of the killie fish available in your LFS?? The ones I'm mainly interested in are the Annulatus (Rocket) Blue Panchax These are imported infrequently, and I was wondering if any are around at the moment. When last in Auck. the shop with the best selection of jkillies wa the Nth Shore branch of Jansens. I'd appreciate it if a local could check out what they have in at the moment and the cost of them. But any others sighted, the same as for them too. Nth or Sth Island. Be interesting to see what is around.

That in my opinion is not the case. They were lucky to survive. Try them next winter with a frost or two.

For sharp-finned fish, and big'uns, To save you the grief of a no water fish at the arrival point, get a plastic bag, line it with several layers of news paper, insert another plastic bag inside the envelope of newspaper, add water, then fish, pressurize, tie the last bag, then the outer bag. This way the pressure is kept intact if/when the inner is pierced.

Several shops will add oxy for you if you explain why, and at no extra cost. As for heating in motel rooms, the rooms should be warm enuf without having to worry about that, or just leave them in their travelling box with a plastic bottle of hot water, and separated from the fish bags by a news paper. The easiest way to do it is to just arrange for someone to pick them up for you and set them up. Why don't you buy your fish then bag and box them and send them down to Chch ahead of you. Caryl, as you mentioned them, I have had both the rosy and golden barbs survive in a bath thru the winter here. Shame we had the Awatapu flood here a few years back. They learnt how to swim in a REAL big pond then, never to be seen again.

There is no such thing Gannet. It is a ploy by unscrupulous LFS to sell a fish to unsupecting buyers. Yes they can be kept in unheated tanks. But not at Haast. Can a coldwater fish be kept outside anywhere in NZ any time? Yes, that's why they are called cold water fish. Guppies I don't think, would suvive a winter in Auck. outside. So the LFS to cover their butts on this one say, " Oh well, we just meant an unheated tank inside a house" Hope the house is heated thru the winter, because in most places thru winter, they wouldn't. They definately don't survive in my unheated fish room in the garage here. So the short answer is NO THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS C W G!!

They are fat little reddish blobs at the moment with a head and tail attached over the top of it. Of this 39, I have lost on 2. Fins crossed.

Thanks :oops: If you have a look at the pic I posted on my Panduro thread, you'll see one of those thermostats also, that I refer to above. It is just the same as one in a heater, without the heating element. Your fish would have died from the over heating. Although the waters oxygen content does drop as the temp. rises. Alan 104

What a bummer. I really feel for you and you loss. The only way that I know of that is ALMOST (nothing is) failsafe, is to put another thermostat, in line with the heater/stat and set it at a slightly higher temp. When/if you see the warning light on this spare stat working, you know the other heater/stat is having problems. Another one, that gives you a bit of time, is to have two heater/stats of low wattage, so that if one doesn't cut out, the other will, and you'll only have the one smaller one doing the heating. Just saves a bit of time, and not what I'd call a safe method. But better than one powerful heater. I lost my pacus to a BIG heater. Alan 104

Take in half a dozen cold ones, smile sweetly, tell them what you want, just say, outa ya scraps would be fine and hey presto. They'll have the caps off before your out the door. It is really only two louver blades, and I have heaps that size, but too far away also. Alan 104
