  1. You go errol, all the best with the shift.
  2. They are not FREE swimming yet. That's what we term the wrigglers. The parents appear to be doing a good job. They have fanned the eggs thru to hatching, taking out fungused eggs that can kill the whole spawn. Now they have shifted them to where they consider is a safe place and they are spitting them back. They don't like them on the bottom of the tank. When they are free swimming, you will know. They look like a little swarm that move all over and around their parents body. Sit back and watch and enjoy. You'll get a buzz when you see the rise for the first time. Then you can start feeding specialized baby food.
  3. Most killie keepers that are in the NZKA have a range of tanks. My main setup is 200 x 200 x 300mm. Lots of them. The only air going into them is an airstone or a bubbling length of air-line. Water changes are relied on instead of filtration. This size tank can present itself as a cupboard fishroom system, heated with only a light bulb and controled with a thermosat. Other tanks are up to the 600 x 300 x 300mm. For the fry anything goes that will hold water. We also keep our species separate from one another due to the fact that the various females are almost impossible to identify with others of the same type. Between Erling, Tim, abd myself, we would have over 50 tanks, probably well on the way to 100, and that's just the ones I really know about.
  4. Tim will also see you right as a member of the NZKA if you aren't already a member. Maybe cheaper still???
  5. Hi there Hayley aka animal_lover. Welcome to the fishy forum for fishy folk. Did you see the price for neons at that new shop just opened over Nth Shore?? Cheapest in town I would think. I don't know where in Auck you are so I don't know what your traveling would be. Guess if you want tho, you could add that to your profile. Surprising how helpful that small piece of info can be.

    Reefs Reef Tank

I wish I had of spent more time looking at the tank Reef than just the casual, freshie look the last time I visited.
  7. And there is nothing wrong with that system either Alan, although I personally haven't used it.
  8. I'll email you one Paul later in the evening. I smell tea. Yummmmmmmm
  9. Is your cheque in the post yet?? We have a good team now.
  10. Paul, I notice that the post that this comes from has a pic of the tank where you are breeding the nothos. It appears to me to be BB tank with the punnet in it with some plants. If this is so, try and get some fine fruit-salad gravel and put it in at about 12mm deep across the bottom. This is very simple to syphon off without the gravel coming with the eggs. You'll find that the Nothos drop a lot of eggs away from the punnet, so you should increase your egg production dramatically. Weeeeeeee!! I shouldn't be telling you this since you aren't a member of the NZKA. KBK
  11. I did that with most of my stands in my fishroom. Just replaced and lengthened the wires to the lights. I used broom stick holders to hold the lights. Spring steel "U" shaped.
  12. I try to overcome that problem and also the "to protect I'll eat them" syn, when the lights go suddenly out, I leave a light on that gives defused light in the fishroom. I like to think that it is like moomlight to them.
  13. Leave them with the parents for about 2 weeks, about that time, Mum and Dad will be getting that ol' feelin' again, and well prolly eat the babies. You have to be very aware at that time as to when you either remove the parents or syphon out the babies.
  14. That's kewl of you to do all that Reef. Must have taken ages to type all that out. BUT Ya missed out the Uaru Would they be the same as discus??
  15. How big are the Uarus?. Also, how big are the elephant noses.? One thing tho, it will be a rather expensive excersise if it doesn't work tho. Good excuse to have an extra tank if something goes wrong.
  16. Snookie, I think that Uarus are more flighty than Discus. Discus just seem to loll around, but when an Uaru gets it into his head, he'll Zoooooooom down the other end of the tank, and come out when the perceived threat has passed.
  17. Geez, ya right. Please try to ignore what I posted. Bet ya don't tho.
  18. Gee, tanks, Oops, getting of the subject, does anyone know compatible fish for the elephant nose??
  19. Oh bother! Having not kept elephant noses I'm sorry that I can't give an opinion.
  20. Same as me Loopy. I'm on a count down with my Apisto panduros. 5 days to go. :bounce:
  21. Good pic Alan. My wife's fav colour too.
  22. It originated with the fear that our imports of fish were, or may be curtailed, and it was to encourage owners to breed fish so as to keep the hobby viable in NZ. As you can see, it looks like that fear is close to become real. At least with some of our fish species in NZ.
  23. Just about right there Loopy, but not quite. The ten have to survive to the youngest's 30th day. Soyou do still have to have ten to present to your Breeding Coordinator.
  24. Trouble is that they do grow. The bichir that is. I agree with Cas, expensive meal, but if you had of bought these when they were in Auck. last year, you would have paid $75.00 a pair for them.
