  1. DONT oyster shells contain way to much crap, i found this in more then one publication and will be more then happy the dig it out for you, lots of phospates and more. also (i think its in eric bourneman)it seems the calcium is not as user friendly to corals.
  2. what shrimp is it that you missing? cleaner, fire or ?? as some shrimp manage to disappear and then pop back days or weeks later. if it is a cleaner then i would point the finger at the brittle star too. but remember innocent til proven guilty!
  3. the average of raising a kid is $180000.00 in 18 years! still a lot of ^%$& money one could spend on a reef (tank that is! not the importer) . but who am i to talk with number two on its way (the last one that is, gonna see the doc soon )
  4. have to agree with reef.harder to keep then most other leathers (except for that bastard of a finger leather of mine which has never opened in the time i had it, 6 months + or so  ) have 3 small YTL which hardly grow and my water is pretty cold at present. so temp doesn't seem to have a great impact, have also seen them in tonga in shallow warm water! used to have a larger one a few years back which did really well, was able to cut every 6 month or so. but have to admit that that tank then had a much higher nutrients levels, which would match up with the locations in tonga. all YTL i saw were in shallow, turbid ( almost lagoon water) and none on the outer reef were most stonies were found.
  5. AW had one of these a few years ago in a soft coral tank, when he decided to sell it he couldn't find a buyer and it ended up at jansens. don't know who bought it. only one i have ever seen in NZ.
  6. well i will show you a positive tank. mine!!! the positve in most cases outweights the negative ones. looking only at negative points especially for nwebees is very offputting and frustrating for many. i look at the positive. but then are always people who will try to find something negative about anything. i think it is much more important to spread to got things around, like others do on other forums! instead of playing tug of war with opinions. because many don't really care. like your draino i think its a great idea but most others taking the piss. and you will most likely never change their mind, regardless if you right about and you can bang your head for as long as you want, they will always find something negative about it. which could be just the way they apply it and has nothing to do with it working or not. (i.e. my coral died after using Laytons draino method so it must be crap and highly unsafe). and because most follow the majority and the mainstream many might miss out on something good. now wouldn't that be sad?
  7. i said "useless" like unsafe, risky, hard to follow, not proven etc etc what ever you want to call it. its the aggressive negativeness in lots of post in this forum regarding the systems some people use. why? doesn't seem have as bad anywhere else? why does it seem that there is only ever one right way to get a great result and many/ any other attempts are being rubbished. why? this is how this hobby has gotten this far over the last 30 odd years, by trying new ways that may be a better way. poiting out only the negative points isn't helpful at all.
  8. i think it does, because whatever system one uses reflects on ones tank same with saying that other are useless without showing a better way. but then people using "useless" methods have great looking tanks and are willing to post picture of them. and i don't care what people use, be it Zeovit, MM, vodka, draino, cheap spanish red wine or battery acid. if they have success with it, great don't knock it. i go around to other reefers and judge their tank not on size, method applied (i.e. vodka) or all that fancy equippment they may have(or not). but solely on their success with keeping and growing corals. may be instead of showing all those beautiful corals people grow we should put up a list of the ones that have died in our tanks. and compare the mortality to the methods that are applied! some people will have no doubt pretty long list. :-? others keept them with absolut minimal losses. and i think this is something we should try to achive first of all. so go the system that works best for you and mostly your corals! i show people my tank and tell them what i use (Zeovit) without pressuring them to do the same. let them decide what to use. its a free world!!!
  9. what else can one say? knocking other peoples ways of doing things (whatever that may be) but can not show better results at all in his tank(or any results as a matter of fact). what happened to Control, another "listen to me how you should do things, but can't show you any pictures ever" reefer from CHCH?
  10. in aperfect world your skimmer should cycle the water from the overflow as this contains most of the waste products. a skimmer that processes water from your sump is not very effective (like mine and most others). :-?
  11. very true, i use 4 M/H (3*150 and 1*400) over my tank which is 2200*710*650
  12. he left with a few coral frags to try and some kalkwasser.
  13. is this before or after he got the new light? hope before
  14. hey Pies, sad reading http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread ... eadid=3230 please scroll to the beginning  Only gravity??
  15. actualy its 22-23 at the moment, goes up to almost 24 on warmer days. will go to 28-29 during the summer months. i lose at present 7-9 liters daily which is replaced with kalkwasser during the night (good thing). this i guess will increase to approx. 10-12 liter per day in summer my tank has dropped a bit in temparature since removing all the crap (4 different fluro light fittings) that were sitting on the tank. also downsized my M/H which should help with keeping the tank cooler in the summer (and saves me money on my power bill ) hey Pies had my tank last summer around the 30 mark which was very nerve wrecking and lost a couple of nice acro's due to high water temp. so 3month ago installed an aircon to cool the room with the tank in it (also nice for the human occupants in the house during summer) and moved my sump under the house with lots of cool airflow.
  16. I can sell you some (1/2 kg) for around $6 if you want some.
  17. i did see them today. look awsome, full fat bellies on all of them. and they really like the fake coral for security (so no more rude remarks about fake corals as there seems to be at least one good use for them) may be i should get one for my reef, would add a splash of orange. hmm
  18. feed more food! that is if your nitates and phosphates allow you.
  19. so is mine, i guess the size of ones tank makes a big difference.
