  1. jafa is spelled wrong! just another f....ng amazing fishshop it is missing an f
  2. sits on concrete floor, unless the whole hill goes down its pretty solid. looks like it could be jetskisteve's tank soon? when are you moving into your new house, and will this tank fit in or do you have to upgrade already
  3. I did years ago in Samoa. after cyclone val. Aggie Grey's hotel the place I worked at that time had 2 generators to run all emergency power (like freezers, minimum lighting etc.. they would run one for 12 hours and then the other for 12 hours. while one was running the other one was cared for by the maintenance department. both were running for weeks without any problem. unlike the hospital's in Apia, they only had one and it died so did a couple of patients who were in intensive care at the time. so it seems that for any longer power cuts one unit may not be enough. i got a couple batterie powered air pumps (left over from Y2K scare which never happened, OK so call me paranoid) that should be enough up here in auckland as it doesn't get that cold to worry about heating and if the temp. drops a bit it will also slow down the metabolism.
  4. like a second reef tank? but then you would still ned a QT when the time comes.
  5. hi chimera, i have one too. very nice fish and extremly fat. mostly well behaved. (after he's eaten your red trachaphyllia of course, thats what happend to mine ) how big is your angel?
  6. even if a fish looks very healty he could still carry deseases. always hard to tell. but this does not mean because you have one sick fish all others will get sick too. all fish carry all sorts of nasties with them around, but get only sick/die if something is wrong in their environment. most often simple quarantine systems do more harm then good, particulary when it comes to finicky eaters. fully matured reef/ live rock system seems to offer a lot more natural food etc. but hey i could be wrong of course!
  7. if a sick fish is placed into a well established tank the rest of the fish should not get automaticly sick too. i have done this a few times when fellow fish keepers gave me a sick fish to look after. only if your set up is not properly done, will your other fish get sick too. ( overstocking, poor skimming, stress, tank to small, diet, etc) sorry to hear about your loss
  8. hmmm looks more like a lion fish, but of course thats not possible.
  9. i had a flatworm infestation a few months ago, there were millions of them. purchased a packet of flatworm exit to get rid of them. but after reading the instruction i decided against it. didn't seem safe enough for me to use. so i just waitedand did nothing (that was hard) since then my flatworm population has dropped to a very small number.
  10. what is it, looks like an powerhead that had an encounter with a truck tyre
  11. 80 deep would lok pretty good. especially for a smaller tank, lots of possiblities with aquascaping.
  12. make sure it fits through the door or window. i almost had a tank made 120x120x60 until i realised it wouldn't fit. got cut down to 90x90x60 which just fitted the door frame.
  13. sorry guys he uses the zeovit system, and only mentions zeolite as a substrate on one occassion. also it seems that he purchased quite a few corals from korallenzucht. nevertheless a very nice tank.
  14. had my aircon installed today. its one of the new version. uses very little power for heating or cooling, constant de humidifing and air freshener, filtering the air to 0.0001 microns. we have a DVS in the old house, have to admit that it removed the problem of wet windows after less then 4 days!!!!! but looking at the ceiling it imputted a lot of dust. also it didn't really cool the house down in the summer and was pretty cold in the winter. so this time around i tried a inverter aircon, its the first night and i am already impressed. will keep you all updated ( price is $3400 installed (cost approx. $1 a day all year around))
  15. howe come brianemone knows so much? have you got an affair with him?
  16. keen diver, dived red sea, caribbean (cuba and mexico), tonga, fiji, vanuatu, maldives, english channel (very good), thailand, cooks and nz of course. all great places and very very different! liked tonga (vava'u and vanuatu the best). have been trying to copy a similar setup ever since (i.e. no rubble of rocks or wall). temp in the red sea of hurghada was f......g freezing at 19 degrees and that was at the surface love wreck diving, done 40 dives on a single wreck in vava'u alone always amased by all the corals that grow in very little light, like bubble or goniopora.
  17. does he have a reef/marine tank (tropicaL NOT local)?
  18. If one can afford that tank then you can afford a cleaning lady or guy for your glass. the power bill for the lights is over $400 a month.
  19. still waiting for some pictures!!!! or is the camera broken, or doesn't the email work?
  20. hi TM, he is ok, but nips on the acropora tips sometimes (mainly when not feed enough i guess) he also does not like you to re-arrange his tank i.e. new rock or corals. fish don't seem to bother him much. will keep him for as long as possible in the reef, later either move him to a tank thats set up for bullies like him or sell him not sure yet. will wait and see. but he is such a cool looking fish and the acropora grow fast enough anyway. my cleaner shrimp even tries to clean him (possible suicidal)
  21. put the metal halides a bit closer together
  22. 8x2x2 tank 3x2x2 sump clown trigger clown tang yellow tang blue damsel scooter blennie royal gramma algae blennie regal angel lots of corals all types
  23. he Pies you don't smoke do you? its bad for your fish nevermind yourself! but if you do smoke then you get ripped off everytime you buy a packet of smokes! in tax free countries like the maldives for example a packet cost $US0.95. doesn't it really piss you off that the government makes such a killing on it, petrol is close behind!! the biggest problem is that you can't even import the stuff yourself. bummer
  24. bought a muzzle already, didn't fit on the kid so used it on the dog instead!!
  25. done a water change this afternoon, would take me normaly 15 minutes to change 70 litres. but beware there is a dark side out there!! its called your son (or daughter???(no personal experience))that lurks around to do mischief!! drained the water from my sump and went to the garage were the new water was airiating for the last week. i almost hooked the pump on to refill the system, when i saw water in the corner of the garage. further investigestion revealed the empty bag of plant fertilizer (pure posphates and nitrates). that stuff was in my opinion well locked away! my lucky!! son escape very quickly to his room before being..... (up to your imagination)! i guess that i was extremly lucky to see the bag because the water was clear with no smell to it. if i had used that water i reckon all life would have perished. so be careful for that little loveable devil out there. you never know when it might strike
