  1. My x with a pure 1/2 black female are colouring up, I don't much like what I've got so far. There is a lot of blue/red tailed males. Surprisingly I didn't get high bred vigour, are the 2 strains closely related cezars? Think I'll just select the best female and breed back to my best pangu male and see what happens. Should I just cull them or would there be interest for them?
  2. You may find your river water is not as soft as you require, where does your tap water come from? I forgot to mention they should breed the next morning, or the following. If they have not breed by then remove them. Don't feed in spawning tank > no need.
  3. I would use nature as your guide. You are simulating rain = cool (14-16C) and high O2 levels (pour water from one jug to another if you don't have an O2 tablet) I always wet in the evening and allow fry to hatch over night > when it's naturally cooler. I hatch peat(notho's) on the floor of my fish room on rubber mats, it's no hotter then 21C there even if the room is stinking hot. This will allow the cool hatching water to rise slowly over night.
  4. :bounce: If you can't get your point across say it again and again and......... :bounce: :bounce:
  5. They're not a stunning fish my a long way Dixon, google their Latin name (at top of thread).
  6. I would suggest you give the australe the whole tank and have lots of floating plant water sprite is good(Indian fern). A "Spawning gang" of Notho's are ok in a 300x300x300mm tank but I prefer to use 600x300x200mm high for a "gang". I cant say in publicly who has them, but .. is watching this tread, I know! and it's not me  Maybe when you go looking at other peoples tanks you need to LOOK extra hard. BTW "Chromaphyosemion is a sub sp. name, they are still Aphyosemion's. Your friendly NZKA Species controller.
  7. I was looking at someones nig peat the other day, it had already been wet twice before with small numbers of fry hatching and I found eggs!
  8. I was only 1/2 joking, to qualify breedings they do have to be published in the monthly N/Letter, as a breeding co-or.. can not view the fish. I just get local clubs to verify spawnings, it's easier.
  9. Oh yes that's for sure. Keep them away from extremes > hot and cold
  10. No I'm not after any, just assessing your success. rachovii 2 weeks ago I would have had some spare, but now they're spoken for. Simpsonichtys fulminantis To the best of my knowledge No Chromaphyosemion Yes, Aphyosemion (Chromaphyosemion) biteaniatum (Lagos) I have some N. Guentheri hatched 30/01/09 that I'm planing to have coloured /sexed by the AGM. Are you planing on another tank or replacing the australe's?
  11. So do you have a tank load of australe gold oeminx?
  12. WOW 28C is way to hot mate! Put a thermometer on the floor to see what the temp is there, it needs to be at least 4C cooler ideally 18-21C ish.
  13. So did anyone actually contact realale as instructed?. I have never meet him but I know who he is.
  14. Yes TM, but I would add that x ray's eggs are light sensitive and the tank needs to be blacked out from the time the adults are put in until the fry are free swimming. Adults get removed after they have spawned = next morning late.
  15. He did and your it > club rules = the editor as we are a postal club. Congratulations :bounce: :bounce:
  16. I may have 5 young available for the auction in April.
  17. If you can't use rain water do you know some one with an RO unit( for marine tank) or you could let a lot of peat sit a bucket of tap water for 2 + weeks.( you will only need to 1/2 fill a 300mm high tank). Tetras do not need high O2 so very light bubbles is ok, I would recommend a sponge filter to be put in the tank so it can grow as the fry do. But it's not needed. Yes the tank was bare bottom, painted black on 3 sides and bottom to help keep the fish calm. And mops. Most small tetras have large mouths, black neons, neon's, cardinals, glowlights and others WILL take NEW HATCHED bbs as soon as they are free swimming. I would feed them bbs 2 or 3 times a day if you can(at least twice morning and night) + feed micro worm milk(liquid from the top of a culture containing yeast and baby micro worms) soon after so when your not home during the day they can still feed. They should be coloured and 1cm long from tip to tail in around 1 month.
  18. Hi diver21 I used to breed these little guys years ago, they are very easy with the right conditions. The adults condition easily on bbs or Decap. Water should be rain water, Ideally a little cooler then the tank they cam from, peat is not required for these guy's but can't hurt to have it. Cooler water when the fish go in, it doesn't matter if it warms up a little over night - cool simulates rain. Ideally the water you condition them in is not rain water, the change helps trigger spawning . Introduce fish to tank as TM said. I used spawning mops (3 big mops ), spawning moss is good too. Tank should be dark but does not have to be blacked out as their eggs are not so light sensitive as neons or cardinals. You want need a spawning trap of any kind if you are home the next morning, fish will need removing by around 10am. You can clearly see the eggs The female will thin out The fish do a barrel role as they spawn releasing the eggs at 75deg spraying the eggs into the mops/moss. I think that's about it. Forgot to mention the fry get very hungry for food @ 1 - 1.25cm +, if you don't feed them enough they will fin nip each other making them look ugly.
  19. To true TM. Excellent alanmin4304, this is something we really need to work out for our environment, I do know the eggs can't handle the freezing cold of winter from another member years ago who lived in Palmerston north.
  20. Yes I had heard you had some success. It is important to ensure you keep plenty of breeders for yourself first > to protect your breeding program.
  21. I'm using very shallow water with a drop of blue in it, you could also try putting them on a bed of peat like the SJO's.
  22. Well that's good, better then falling over a. The point is still there though, Best not to heat them at all, cool long spawnings rather then hot quick ones. I still need to get some Nig's myself, had no real luck with the peat I've been sent.
  23. No that's not quit correct Barrie, I had them out side from one summer to the next wintering out side, yes with ice on top. When I empted the the 60lt plastic rubbish bin they were in to take the peat out there were lots of eggs, but I don't know if they accusal spawned over winter.
  24. I lost a few of mine too. Although I had 20 odd hatch due to lack of time lost most of them but still have 4 growing nicely with some young CPD's.
  25. So lets confirm, you wouldn't breed Nothobranchius rachovi either because it can take up to 6 months for their eggs to hatch.
