    striatum

No alanmin 4304 I have not seen them in the 10 years I've kept killies. this is pic 10 from my photobucket http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/s ... atum10.jpg this is the link to them all http://photobucket.com/albums/y187/sjoe ... 0striatum/ the pic's are all the same fish with different light and flash settings
  3. I agree with Alan however .... if you pick the killie eggs from a spawning mop dayly - twice daly rather then let them spawn in a planted tank, the predation of eggs by the B/N should not be a problem.
  4. I'm not sure you have given good/full advice there Blue - nitrates are acid if there very high and removed to quickly the tanks PH will/may change dramaticly this can cause a lot of harm to the fish!! Ph is 6!!!!! this may be due to high nitrates ??
  5. Hi Paul, I have breed both the Nematobrycon palmeri and lacortei, there eggs are typical tetra size about half to 1/3 smaller then the common danios and clear(infertile eggs go white), when you see them you will know!!. (note it's been a long time since i've spawned danios) You say the females apear full one day then empty the next. In my experiance it is unusal for this species to drop all there eggs in one mornings spawn, but can happen from time to time when the female is VERY ripe. More often then not when placed in a spawning setup with Ph 6.5 to neutral and very low GH idealy below 10ppm for max fertility, the fish (trio is best) will start spawning after 48 hours and will breed over 2 to 4 days. They are egg eater so lots of cover or a spawning trap may help. Once spawned a pair of N. lacorti in a 250mm sq tank 200mm deep, the bottom of the tank was 100% covered in thick spawning mops, after a week there good numbers of eggs under all the mops, but as I had used water with a GH of 30ppm(tap water) most were infertile. if your fish are breeding in your com tanks,as it is well planted with lots of cover you should have small numbers of fry turn up, I have seen this happen. good luck Stu
  6. I've never had this problem with my cockatoo's BK, do you have them at breeding temp's 26C to 30C and feed them well - including live food, bbs or frozen blood worms ??
  7. Glade I had a look at some old posts, didn't see your ?? Alan first time round. well as you know the fish were not all that happy when I got them, 1 striatum was DOA. I got 7 p82 eggs before the female some how jumped out of the tank, then I spilt the container with the eggs lossing them all over my fish room floor  . the C. biteaniatum were very beaten up so I have desided to just rest them allowing them to come into condition slowly, have not started breeding them yet but they are much happier. as said at the top 1 of my trio was DOA leaving me a pair, all the eggs to begin with were soft and poped as soon as I touched them no matter what I did. I am glade to say these problems are mostly behind me now and I have 9 fry with another 15 eggs eyed up with more eggs being collected everyday just a note for those out there that have not seen Aphyosemion striatum in person, the stunning pic's you can find in the web DO NOT do this fish justice, they are IMHO the prettest killi in this country by far
  8. great that you got them simfish, Sorry I couldn't help more but with your timing, I think it was the best thing. I'm glade you got them at a fair price too. Cockatoo's have been known to sell for twice that price in Auckalnd.
  9. yep, but your allowed to keep other fish too
  10. She has been pm'ing me to much killies are infectious
  11. link to trade and exchange http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/here-v ... tml#109463
  12. yes $6.95 is posably import price there cheep because there small and prolific if given the right food. at 2cm you should be able to sex them, this may mean there all females, saw this last time I was in Auckland - all females, do you remember Alan poor things were getting squashed against the glass and floating betta tank.
  13. That tank size is fine for a pair of most killi species Penjane. leave the baby guppys in nathin like live food to keep your killies happy
  14. Hi penjane, to the best of my knowlage there is NO local breeder down there that could supply shops or wholesalers yet. so that means there probly imported fish, if that is the case prepare your self for a big shock when you check the price  imported killies are 1/3 to twice as expencive as nz breed fish. I know I have a hole in my wallet
  15. Shae you forgot 1 group *semi annuals, species that can be breed as either annuals or non annuals, there are/were two species in nz recently that fall in this group. Fundulopanchax sjoestedti and Fundulopanchax filamentosum.
  16. penjane, I know this may be a little off topic "killi eggs" but !! how far are you from dunedin?? and are you prepared to travel there?? this is a good thing on notho's, I spit my 2ft tanks into 3 tanks 300mmx200mm and 200mm high = 3 notho tanks the trick is in the dividers and lids must be NO jumping between tanks. the only killies in your area is korthausae yellow that I know of.
  17. It depends slitly on the species Penjane, Nothobranchius being the most differcult. For Nothobranchius all you have to do when there ready to hatch is add water . i'm not kidding.
  18. Hi Paul I breed that strain years ago, there called the "SUNSET GOURAMI", Colisa libiosa, you don't want to do a really good job of breeding them thou there supper prolific
  19. Hi alanmin 4304, yes you can start them out on microworms, but I suspect you already know that killies will grow faster on bbs. If you don't have any bbs eggs contact the treasurer of NZKA, he can help you out (NZKA members only). Just a note of caution!!!! we have 2 strains of N. korthausae please make sure you know which strain you are getting - red strain throws different fin coloured males, yellow strain has distinct blue sides and only throws yellow finned males. good luck, the more killi people in the south the better, I think it's 5 now unfortunatly you all live in different citys
  20. Great Kyle, sounds like, if the weather is ok i'm going shrimping tomorrow .

    killies

Luke , T/C = toothcarp = killifish. EDIT. MUST BE CAREFUL. Killifish are "egg laying toothcarp" other "toothcarp" are  guppys SJD is incorrect started by Alan, then I  , it should be SJO = king killi = blue gularis = Fundulopanchax sjoestedti. I do have "1" 3cm to 4cm pair left. the large spawning I did earlier in the year are now starting to produce fertile eggs but don't know if anybody has eggs to spare yet.
  22. It's my understanding that Uaru's are VERY shy. to the point that the person I know that had them placed strips of rubish bags in the bear bottom tank(to replace plants) were they could hide.
  23. Way to go Marty . How long did they take to hatch from collection date? now all you gota do is grow them. biteaniatum sp. always seem to grow slowly compared to other non-annuals, at least thats what it fells like waiting for that lyretail to stretch  good luck with them bud
