Apart form the fact that they are classified as a pest animal, which can NOT be understated. There nasty pecies of work. there small but vicious they Will kill anything that lives with them large or small by harassment.
-
do you have a pic, Altums are not easy to breed and a pair for $30.00 retail is rather surprising. There was an angel imported a couple of years ago called purvian altums which are infact a wild form of P. scalare not P. altum. If you cant post pic, is your fish "BODY"(not counting the fins and assuming your angels are mature not young adults ) round, long or tall??

yes well thats does make a difference. You should be able to find the correct peat at a garden centre. If you are still having problems finding it just use pure rain water for the rummy nose. I'm afraid the water at 120ppm is no good any more for your purpose as it needs to be below 7ppm or even 5ppm for the eggs to hatch I believe.
-
Hi Showtime, Sphagnum moss and peat moss are not the same when it comes to water conditioning, you need to look for brown woody like stuff(you do need to give it a rince to remove the super fine particals). you said OMG 120ppm is not rain water, rain water is 0ppm GH. So something has contaminated it. Why do you wont to use the peat for anyway if you have rain water? peat will not soften 120ppm that much anyway. Why's......... may enable us to help you better?

Help -- Discus with white patch on gill - both side
caserole replied to akukny88's topic in Freshwater
I'm sorry I don't know what could be wrong with your fish but you have traeted your fish for just about everything from:- external and internal protozoa(ich/velvet and others), flukes(flat worms), anchor worms, extermal and internal bacterial infections, funge external and internal Have I missed anything there's not anything I know of left that would cause:- sorry. -
I don't want to recomend any camera in particular but it should have macro and large optical zoom. My camera is really good but it is a pocket size jobie, I would recomend that you buy a camera that looks like the old 35mm type that way you can put a rubber jacket around the lense for cutting out the glear from light reflecting off the front glass pane, if you don't know what I mean you will when you take your first shot and all you can see in the pic is a reflection of someones fingers holding onto a camera and an idiot sterring back at you, at least thats what happened to me

Yes I argee with everything you have said, bloat is caused by blockage in the intestines (it is sugested that malawi cichlids have thiner intestines and are more in cline to suffer from blockages especially .. paste what you have said but include bacteria as well). The thing I have with people saying that white worms are fatty. it they just say it, then quote some book that just says it or quotes a professer with heeps of knowlage but he just says it - maybe with an addition in my experiance - but were's the proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! don't take it personaly Frenchy but you have said these things before and you are not coming up with FACTS, neither do the experts just "IMO" OR "IME". Only if there was a report made of the scientific analysing of white worms then it would be settled Then we would learn they are 18% fat(high ) of which most is fatty acids , not saturated animal fats. but I've said that before too  (no proof) I figure you may agree with this, fish or fry feeded alot of 1 type of food is not good for there long term health and you should try as many foods as you can think of, even different shop bought foods - home made food fine grated them growned to a fine mash for fry, live food can be frozen if your worryed about contaminating your fry but freezing will not kill all bacteria if that is a concern, it just means you feed a very small amount at any one time(particularly with regareds to malawi cichlids). I've been doing a lot of study lately into the treatment and dose rates for different diseases, :-? it's been mind numbing at times web page after web page after... then just when you thing you've found all you need you find a contradiction and have to dig deeper. Anyway hopefully you have gained some ideas what and how you can feed your fry JoandWilly or ideas for the total health of your fish. It can be testing thou, was in my fish room for some time today and each time I when past the tank with young angelfish I feed them. There so greedy, live bbs, this flake , that flake, frozen bbs, discus bits, little red shrimps(i collect localy), mozy riglers, daiphnia, more flake, white worm, cat fish pellets, more flake.Couldn't be bothered grinding up earth worms today so they can b..... starve  But they did only get a pinch at a time verity - little and often, as much as you can manage. good luck

It's a shame you don't have a photobucket url for bigger dimentions. BUT TANK LOOKS GREAT. Just love the colour reflecting off the Emperor tetras, u don't see thou's colour so much when kept under brite light.

Remember the importation of ornamental fish was and still is(for a short time anyway) by "Geneus" for the most part. Some Tilapia can survive in cold water. So all Tilapia got band!! plain and simple. I knew someone more then 1/2 my life ago that had to distroy there pet tropical Tilapia when they were put on the noxious fish list. It was a very large fish they had grown from a buba, very sad

:-? The fat thing in whiteworms rares it's head again rubbish(can't say what I would like to ) Sorry JoandWilly not meaning anything personal. Malawi's are pigs thats why they get bacterial infections in there gut(bloat), however bbs are laxatives food for thought in more ways then one. Good luck with the bab's JoandWilly.

I've just read this thread and after reading your initial post my first thoughts were toxic poisoning. Then after your answers to Bill's quistions that confirmed it. 1 of the 3 main culprits ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, but probably the first Why- your filter was not established = no way to brack down the ammonia to less harmful (at low level) cemicals. 4 feedings a day of a highly polutant food(also unnecessary for mollies, they will eat finely crushed flake just a tine bit at a time) all the above was going on in JUST 20lts of water = bad things happen fast, like fry dieing over night. I hope you don't think I'm being critical, I've been in this game a why'll and learnt my lessons my others mistakes or the hard way . I remember exactly what you have said happening to people breeding angel fish and guess what, angel fry have a very low tolerance to ammoinia. Ways to fix for the future, 20lt tank is fine as long as :- 1, have an extabished spare filter hidding somewere for just this event. 2, syphon uneaten food daily this will cut down the waste the filter has to deal with AND give the little guy and gals a small water change. I hope you have better luck next time having your fish breed is so cool and a great way of getting MORE FISH :bounce: :bounce:

You don't know how lucky you are or do you?? Pop round anytime sweet as. I'm not out your way much. Probably the same for you - opposite side of wellington

Southerrrngirrl wrote  5% of your tanks water volume = 3 to 4lts daily or 6 to 8lts every other day. I do a 5% water change everyday because 30% of 4500lts sounds like to much hard work

What a sweety  I got 3 stars :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Yet another suggestion for trickle filter bio media
caserole replied to Quark_VI's topic in DIY Section
I agree with Alan4304, the plungers don't have much surface area compared to many other media. It probably will work just fine if your filter chamber is large enough for the water volume of your system. I still prefer porous rocks for mine.. -
Hay welcome back to ya BOTH  I was away being bizzy so didn't miss ya  But it was really great meeting up with you guys again on the weekend. It's always nice to meet up with happy smiley people :bounce: :bounce: just one more post to go

Hi Southerrrngirrl and WECOME I think your tank is just fine for small tetras. as your on rain water you should defiantly keep an eye on your ph or do little water changes daily, the acid nitrates are what may cause ph swings in rain water but easy to fix if it becomes a prob. Good luck
-
Hi Cyberfin I say go marine too, but then again the $$ you could spend on a good marine will build you a fish room full of tanks. Thank goodness for MTS :bounce: :bounce:

Ballistic said I kind of question this info, white worms are best kept betwwen 10 and 14C to much colder they will stop breeding - warmer they get to hot and will try to escape before being cooked The tank Ballistic uses must be just right or he wouldn't have worms, but if someone tried keeping them under a light hood on a hot tank well it may be a different story. Another thing is feeding bread soaked in MILK the milk Will cause your culture to go off more quickly. I know, lost a dam good culture this way . Just soak bread in water and very there diet rather then adding milk. But then you must remember the golden rule :bounce: if it ain't broken....

it depend on the species. Between 2 and 3cm for the small species, EXCEPT pigmy species there even smaller. If you feed them heeps of live food you will soon see the females fill with eggs if there old enough.

There is another option, that is a sump pump. There not made for Aquariums but they will do the job. There are many brands but dam if I can remember any right now. There is the "one pump" it is avalable here the wholesaler is Brocklands or if you what to spend some $$ there are magnetic drive pumps on commercial web sites you just have to ask that it is 240V unlike the US which runs on 115V. I have a magnetic drive a really good 1 and it cost me a little under $1000.00 to my door including custom fees, gst etc. But it is probably more powerful then you require so a smaller module will be cheeper but just as reliable.
