no i didnt, prazi, aviverm i was told. it is seeking myhand and wants food. but doesnt eat much. its become mroe active last night and today. but will see
-
that looks good. 100w that is on for 24/7 costs about 3 to 4 dollars a week. really the cost of a thermostat probably isnt worth it in my opinion lol,
-
can make it yourself, i used an old exo terra screw fitting lamp. dont under estimate them i use them, the good thins is that they are insulated i think. the heat is directed well to one direction means the tank heats up better 56 is actually worth it. the only place i know to get them from is maybe a place taht sells lamps for pigs or something, the exo terra lamps are designed to focus heat into a direction...and it works well

i have done many of this while fish is inside. first, DO KEEP the canisters running, to ensure youa re filtering and sucking up as much crud as posssible. second, i have a better way that is cleaner:D i didnt read all posts lol but correct me if its said already. dont buy a dust pan, buy a large fish net for 3 to 7 dollars or if you have one. (usually they et destroyed) but its cheap. use the net to scoop up the gravel or substrate, thsi awy it drains before you put it into a bucket. so you need towels anyways, you need buckets but less mess. just litereally net up the substrate as much as the net can stand. this works for me. one problem, silica is fine. you cannot do this wtih silica, but can with any other substrate even coral sand. silica is diffucllt and you must have a very fine mesh net. water i find is the biggest mess maker here.

stressed out. if eating good sign. but oscars are hardy. very hardy lol i find them to be easy to care for. no special care in fact. they will eat anything too. make sure you get rid of white spot. other fish may be harassing it. add hiding spots

locust eat grass, bran - i hear if you starve them they will eat cabbage whcih is easy to get year round. i find grass dont grow much during winter. and if i leave it unmowed in summer my house looks like a drug dealers house. anyway they are easy tob reed. i just have a 100w bulb haning int he middle of teh tank, on for 10 hours. this heats it up. then on one side, peat, other is feeding wide with the bulb on the food. i started wtih 30 females and had more than 1000. but, make sure you clean the poo. my tank is accessed from above, whcih im changing. cos they fly UP - so using a spare lizard cage to breed. beetles infested and are eating the locusts lol but they are easyt o breed! and the females keep laying till they die! amazing! oh yes, babies climb......vaseline the sides

the fish is not noticeably using both gills. and slightly mroe active but seems like its still unwell. i havent seen it eat but i see its stomach shrinking and enlarging after feeds so assume so. but still not swimming around as much and 45 degree angle hanging around. is there such a thing as too far gone? that there is no saving it? if so, is it more humane to put it down?

those stick on ones suck! i hate them aqua one digital is very reliable. battery lasts ages! more than a year so far ! i use aqua one digital, and have a spare 4 dollar analog one, the one you hang on the side, not floating, its on a stainless steel backing i then do a TEMP AUDIT every now and then to ensure the aqua ones are working fine. stick on ones never last , the suction cup always hardens and becomes useless.

yeah thats what im gonna do the water cahnges are big and significant. i think its cos they were fat and full when i transfered too. better now. canister doing its thing and the sponge should cycle soon. i think i didnt give sponge enoughb io load i will put the other sponges in the sump to cycle them though. get them ready and loaded
-
maybe i didnt give enough time or enough bio load to them. none the less, i have put a canister on, and will seed the other sponges to ensure when i use them they are cycled
-
will do having a slight annoying problem though i got some sponge filters you know the air powered ones. and i had an eheim internal in there. only 2 discus adults. not even feeding much. i had the filters in there 3.5 weeks now. and amonia slowly creeping when i measured after day 3. there is a good amount of water change in there so that kept it low through out. must take longer for bio sponge and internal to cycle. but in saying that, i removed the internal. kept the sponge as a aerator and extra filtration and put in a canister aqua one. fully cycled to filter the tank. i wanted to try the sponge, disappointed lol but so many breeders use them! how long does it take to cycle those - i find cycling canisters with brand new bio media takes only 3 weeks ish. very fast. i guess all my media is always been seasoned media. i was hoping i would only need the sponge filters lol i might start seeding the 2 spare i have so when comes time to use them its fully seasoned.

when you buy lots also, they settle in quicker less stress. key to growing them huge is lost of food, lots of water changes in my opinion. I have 17 large ones in my tank, and 5 small to medium oddballs in discus tank. the 17 large ones will chew on beef balls:D awesome to watch schooling

eheim you will never regret! 3 years warranty has the best shorted thermostat so allows the least swing. to be honest, jsut the quarter the dose is enough once a week i reckon
-
first and foremost: before you buy the clowns - Get a good heater. Eheim 300w should take care of your 500L. Another option if you dont mind ugliness - poly cover on back and sides of tank. that will help alot. But if you already have an eheim 300w and its still swinging 5c - then you will have problems. that will stress out fish i reckon. buy another, you will save power too! cos teh heater wont stay on as long. eheim in my opinion can heat a 500L to 29 to 30 comfortably in a room that is 8 to 10 degrees colcer than the desired temp (eg 30c desired temp, room is 20c) if its colder than that, youw ill have issues, so get another. then get the clowns. some sold per water change is good - i am a big fan of salt. also you can buy them direct from suppliers COARSE SALT grade 22 - 1.10 a kilo. Dunninghams sells them. Its rock salt you eat too. i use alot of them, currently i bought in bulk that saved me 15 cents a kilo - i have 75 kgs sittign in my garage. with clows, david is right, get it direct from bag so they only acclimatise once. less stress. quarantine is usefull. but i just dont get clowns that are skinny - make sure they are rounded bellies and active and fat....never get skinny ones... i have never had good luck wtih skinny ones.
-
i think your fx5 should be fine in a 500L tank wtih those clowns. i fill bottom 2 trays full of bio media, top tray just filter wool.....and it cranks it. if you have a similar set up, it should be ok. i dont bother with 'pre filter' noodles, useless in my opinion. just pure bio media in 2 bottom trays. i have a regime in my tanks - works for me, i dont get diseases. Also, my 2 1200L tanks has 125% or more water change every week total and my grow out tank has 200% a week or just under. but what i do is put some tonic salt into the water 3 times a week, just a quarter dose. the tonic salts composition contains much trace elements, i found that it keeps my fish healthy. might be old fashioned but... i have had good results with it. when you put them in, treat with melafix straight away - then put some salt in there. then do water change 2 to 3 days later....' water quality is critical in any situation right ? so jsut ensure you do wc often
