  1. Google the SIAM PARAGON AMAZON THEME tank its basically concret walls with a curved front glass in front. though thts a HUGE tank... i mean commercial you can create something that is smaller in scale but the same principle of having a rocky background, water fall and a glass viewing front. maybe in the front, putting another layer of perspex that go higher to ensure the fish dont jump out.
  2. spa poosl are designed to be covered most of the time, with extreme insulation you can emulate a spa pool aqua therm specializes in pools that are insulated it hink but you would need a window. no good seeing it from above, youw ont even see whast there. might as well have a gold fish pond whcih is easy. i think a large concrete type tank with a glass front. you can insulate concrete. inside a basement, with sides insulated and top insulated - maybe a cover for the top where it has room for fish to jump would be good. Heating something like that. 4000L plus... you would need, well i would use a gas to water external heater. very cost effective, you can get them for a good price considering they heat massive amounts of water. filtration you would go ULTIMA i believe, was discussing wtih thsi david.... you need large scale filtration. OR youc an do DIY drums etc, but if you are gonna go all out, you want it to look nice, you want it to be good. If i had something like this, i would most likely invest in putting several high grade arowanas in there..... so i wouldnt skip on anything in terms of cost. but then again, NZ has such limited fish to keep. what would one keep in there? if not monsterfish i guess you can have a MEGA community tank. but monster fish, we are limited in choice. msut say, 100 plus clown loaches would look good schooling in that monster tank:D
  3. funny thing, some ornates are agros ome are not. i think if they have been alone for awhile or no other large fish they become like that. my ornates are peaceful. very peaceful. make sure small wc daily, not big ones
  4. i have two ck living together, 1 is stunted wtih a buster jaw from when young (broke it striking food) the other is a highs pot one that is already overtaking it in growth and is much younger. 32cm now and growing. going for 40plus cm anyway, they are hardy at a good size and WILl accept pellets so dont believe what you read on them about food, i read that too. they easily accept food that is dead or pellets. Mine eat discus mix beef and pellets. gorge on it. feed it pellets, good quality pellets, like hikari c gold or sinkiing caRNIVORE or massivore. massivore you will be astonished at the growth rate and HEALING. if may survive, make sure you give it good water, maybe melafix to avoid infection if not already healed. dont gfeed it live food. pellets is the way.
  5. Also, with fish heaven - it used to be owned by a HE, i purchased fish from him and they were nice good fish. well taken care of. then she took over the operation, bought fish off her, some died, some wre sick got sick quckly etc. when i went back and HE was gone, SHE did nto maintain tanks, dirty, and old food in there. thast the problem. i think you purchased at a wrong time.
  6. i find discus if inbred too much are very finicky and hard to care for. health problems galore, thats why i stopped getting them I like robust hybrids, like parrots.... but discus i found that was too hybridised with no genetic diversity to avoid congenital diseases and sickness. They are weak fish ingeneral (except i found with turq variations) pigeon bloods i found to be not as strong as the turq types. just my observation and experience. also many claim they are expert breeders - sure, perhaps, but jsut because one can breed them deosnt make them experts. also blood lines in NZ seem to be very limited. so how do they perpetually breed the same strain? Interbreeding of course..... problems there already. im off discus for this reason also, i like the things liek cobalts, turqs - evens ome albino strains are strong. but i found pigeon blood in this country is tainted and you cant tell what is good anymore!! (im sure my statements will cause contraversy) but this is my observation, my take and experience and what i have seen done in the country. but such fapid fungus growth means your water may have an outbreak. I agree. Treat it. Dont cross contaminate - also weak fish will get an infestation, these fungus im sure exist already, it just atkes a weak fish to manifest itself. another thing i noticed, lots of breeders will change water up to 100% a day, some manually some auto. i find this somewhat weakens the fish, this theory/assesment si backed up by lfs too. by changing the water so frequently, youe nd up wtih fish with very little immune system. think BUBBLE BOY. if you protect a child and never let them expose themselves to the environments, theywill be weak. To a certain degree of coruse. I have seen big discus raised in water that wasnt changed daily. In fact the biggest discus i have seen was not raised this way. Big discus i purchased that was raised thsi way get sick or settle in longer.
  7. It would not be worth setting up another tank and treating the fish. Angels are cheap. it would only suffer and success rate would be small i reckon. I would put it down before it contaminates others.
  8. what you will find is that some fish have an adaptation. say it sucks water into its mouth, it could divert that water so it goes through gills or something. some ancient fish hve this also. perhaps it has that adaptation. but also, an adaptation of low oxygen requirements might be one also, so when dug in the gravel, it can make do with what little water flow it gets while dug in. my TT Eel never digs itself in the sand, albeit the sand gets moved around too quickly, never tried making the sand deeper though. its happy in the fake log that covers its entire body.
  9. haha fair enough actually i dont power feed the rtg anymore, havent for ages now. it will take only what it wants to eat. usually 1 shrimp a day average, sometimes none. i feed a lil bit of fd shrimp , well used to - but no power feeding. i do believe it had smoethign int he mouth, it was chewing the whole time. and physically could not open the mouth enought o take in food. but last night, took the shrimp easily. since its big, it isnt eating as much as it used to. but it will eat endless amounts of locust though lol or mealworms if given the chance.
  10. r32 at teh peak? sorry confused. yeah gonna take vids, when they start getting setled in. im gonna do a feecding and video the frenzy:D
  11. still observing, hope it eats today! if it eats today then should be right.
  12. just got another 15 clown loaches last night. total 75 now:D still thinking, should i have 88 or 101 - still deciding, i guess the logistics of 101 when theya re larger is somewhat harder. the food can also be an issue. but id ont mind, i love feedin them. turning into pigs, no they are settled in!! the large ones are just starting to coem out again but the small ones settle quickly!~ schooling and eating like maniacs. also got some weirder oddballs. aclled 'saddlebacks' where the mid line and head line connects at the top. also some 1,2 joins. http://www.loaches.com/articles/clown-l ... variations interesting website.
  13. was planning to put it to sleep mid next week if woudl not eat. but last night, EUREKA!! dangled shrimp... and took it immediately!! swallowed it with no hassles. then it even ate some pellets... probably starving! at least 2 weeks of no food at all. hope it keeps it up. will try to feed today.
  14. yeah true. to ensuer it doesnt stres anymore. i will probably get the chems soon. david will give me a hand he said.
  15. yeah, the aro improter who has had experience said he has meds to give me to put t to sleep while i examine the mouht but he said wait a bit more, as if its internal, and needs to heal only, then putting it to sleep wont help i will wait a few mroe days i think then do something if required.
  16. My RTG usually eats 1 maybe 2 prawns max per feed. Average 1 prawn per day. about 1 or 1.5 months ago, it ate a clown loach, after swallowing, it was hesitant to eat, would chase food but cannot bite or swallow and spits it out. after 3 days it started eating FD Shrimp, after 5 it ate shrimps again. still chewing and takes ages to swallow. then after about 2 weeks, it would eat perfectly fine, as normal, hungry etc. Then 11 days ago, after a feed of shrimps no sell. it swallows the first like a monster. Then the second, it keeps in its mouth, this is common i found, its deshelled and it tends to chew them. but usually swallows the the second or last piece it goes for with in a couple hours max after chewing. The nextd ay, come feeding time, it ignores food. It seems like its stillc hewing, weird. So i left it. Then the next day, still ignores food. fast forward to 11 days now, today, i try dangling a prawn with shell no head and with no shell - it loves prawns with shell, really notices it has the shell.... it darts from the end of the tank to the prawn like it wants to eat it, but cannot seem to grab the shrimp, it just sits there, circling the food, wanting to go for it, smelling it... literally will stay there for 1 min as it is hungry and very visibly so. It has done this from 8 days ago until now. But it seems like there is something in its mouth to chew. You know when aros swallow,it pushes it wtih its tongue and has eh trademark bottom of mouth popping out as it does it. i cant see anything in the mouth, but then again ist hard. no fish are missing - all its eated is prawns and fd shrimp. What do i do? Its clearly and visibly hungry for food. But something is stopping it. 11 days later, today, its clearly a lil more stressed in the tank, i know they can go ages wtih no food, but i think its taking its toll on the fish. any ideas? i dont want to take it out and forcefully open its mouth to check, that would ccaught must more stress. help!! never encountered this before.
  17. african knives i used to have one. a bit more agro than ck, rck and bgk. it was attacking my silver at the time. but, good fish, active and doesnt get as huge i think than ck and rck get one:D
  18. yeah, also you have to factor in, only a certain % of those wille ven buy fish.
  19. yeah, even when i feed once a day, some eat less than others. i can visibly see already some overtaking growth of others, just the way it is with clown loaches i guess.
  20. yeah, fair enough may re asses the morning feed i guess i am just portioning the feed through out the day, so they dont get a bulge in the belly and gorge at a time. they are nocturnal - thats why i decided to give them a little something when they are most active
  21. how can it be, i am not feeding anymore - i am just spreading the feed..... just like humans, spreading out meals but same quantity is better. instead of letting them gorge once a day, i let them have lighter snacks through out the day.....
