  1. Ok, my next tank - aro comm monstrosity i want tob e bare bottom but i HATE the bracing look. so i considrered 2 massive sheets of glass at the bottom so its braced but effectively looks unbraced... if that makes sense. anyhoooo... i decided, i want the bare bottom effect but the substrate look so im going to coat the bottom with silicone, and spread the desired substrate onto the bottom, thsi way, it looks natural, but no way the muck can penetrate the 'substrate' and has the bare bottom effect of cleanliness. AND no worries about bracing cos youc an just build up around the edge of it and it will be invisible.... elegant solution i thought but this is the feedback and critique time. any issues you foresee here are some that you might come up with 1) mvoing it would be hard cos its heavier. I will never move the tank, i will build another onsite where ever i go, tank size im looking at cannot be moved 2) it might be so cool and such an awesome idea that one could explode yes, that is a problem but i will deal with it in time:) thanks for your help in advance
  2. If you are asian, then an adult arowana should be ok in a 4 foot :sml1: (note: im asian so im immune to jibes about asians 8) ) :digH:
  3. i wouldnt, as soon as live food is fed, that is bad. they got used to lie food, thats probably why it doesnt eat pellets. in qurantine jars are fed pellets, so the store must hvae spoilt it. as for swimming, the sides and back should be covered untill it settles or permanently, to stop it from spooking.
  4. so m=uch effort for earthworms, better just buying fish fillet. i would feed whole anchovies or fish fillet with pellets
  5. dont really like earthworms, they dont seem to be that nutritious apparently but i could be wrong. also seems dirty! i would keep trying sticks, pellet trained aro is a good aro
  6. i guess compare themt ot he store per kg perhaps, not sure, havent used it for ages. But i must say, Hikari is awesome, hikari does the job, hikari.... fantastic........ (PETWARE PAY ATTENTION PLEASE!!!) :sml1: sponsorship? no, never.... (cough fluval is awesome) nah, wouldn't dream of something like that tetra bits are awesome for redness, but if you have discus that isnt red, then maybe hikari discus bio gold is better? sera also make a product for blue and red discus. never used them. i actually dont know what compound is responsible for the 'blueness' of fish. Or gold colouration for that matter.
  7. i found also when i was keeping discus, hikari bio gold is less likely to break apart. they like it more and they dont make as much of a mess. maybe the texture? but i found that tetra colour bits would easily be chewed up and spit out while the hikari stuff, they tend to not do that as much
  8. from my experience and talking to breeders tetra colour bits is a good red enhancer. it will make orange discus very red indeed. fish food is usually much the same when you buy the high end stuff. but, hikari is hikari. ....... YEAH!
  9. yeah, i wil proably try something similar. see how it goes
  10. HAHA! what can i say, I found this in a private beach washed up after a storm dragged it 1 km with the entire tree (its actually the root system) cut it, and drove it up from Bay of Islands to take home!! im attached to it! but i find it so spectacular, probably cos im a bit .... weird :dunno: but im gonna make it the centrepiece of my mega aro comm one day.
  11. haha, i dont have a problem with it in your tank actually! but i do want it back, and your royal should take ages before they demolish it anyways! also you will have other bits of wood, so will be ok for a while lol i have actually had dreams about having this in my tank one day! dreams!!! i dream about it.... yes, im sick in the head  then when sunk and when my tank is set up, ill get it back
  12. you could also put armor on them!! just use underwater silicone
  13. fx5 is absolutely fantastic, best value large capacity filtration you can get. (petware please sponsor me! i use fluval AND HIKARI) thanks
  14. fantastic specimen!! what a beaut! i wouldnt risk getting that beat up for breeding lol suggestion: Maqybe put a background, the white brick wall... well, not that nice lol but awesome fish.
  15. haha what size? make sure its eating pellets before hand! i find a combo of pellets in the morning, meaty (fish fillet, prawn) at night grows them super duper quick! 1 inch a month should be a minimum growth up to 40 cms. yeah! arowana!
  16. haha its a SPECTACULAR piece of wood! a small pool is a brilliant idea! may try that!
  17. too much will drive the ph too low though, though by volume the wood isnt actually that big, but still, wanna be sunk before intro.
  18. could be as last option but i want to get rid of any existing tannins if possible before hand. prefer to soak it first.
  19. for the meantime they are gonna be in a 600Litre. with the same su mp and a fx5.
  20. i have a big piece of wood. its more of an awkward shape. i want to soak 75 to 80% of it, that should do it, and sink in a tank. anyone in akl, even around south area with a pond in a lifestyle block or a pool or a giant tub? wanna soak it there untill sunk:D approx dimensions needed is about 1metre long, 60 to 70cm high, about 1m wide or slightly less. if the thick bottom parts sink, the tips at the top dont need to be sunk as it will drag it down under.
  21. no, hasnt at all. its gone now anyways, gave it to Ally07. It had some sort of hole in head type but erosion on the top of its body, didnt nkow what to do. funny is that it was an old fish. at least 4 to 5 years old, had it since my rtg was small.
  22. yeah, flagtail is gone though:( its ok, ill get another one day. had to sell, moving aro into a smaller tank, so didnt have room.
  23. Pics taken with Samsung Galaxy s3, sorry not SLR so may not be as good. no flash
  24. as for being jealous of the UK, well, many animals are not allowed in nz and fish included. i think to some degree, we are all jealous of the UK in that regard.... maybe not the weather though! If you ever visit Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia (though i dont recommend philippines, im from there and its really quite gross) you will see, the range is disgustingly awesome! i remember, snakes as far as the eyes can see, eagles, owls, large wild cats, large fish, sharks, sting rays fresh and salt water. STURGEON!! nz weather i recon would be awesome for sturgeon!! maybe a new industry of caviar can sprout from the pure waters of nz:D
