  1. Mince and Cheese is on the prowl!!! LMAO!
  2. Good thread. Welcome back Pie man.
  3. I agree that smaller water volumes pass through skimmers more often, therefore have a better chance of clenaing, however... The concentration of the nutrients in the water column of the larger system will be more spread out than the smaller system therefore the inhabitants of the system will only come into half as much contact as the smaller system. The skimmer in the larger system will still get skimmed just as efficiently because you have obviously added a larger skimmer. Dont forget this.... I agree with the skimmer statements Layton, but thats not what this is about. Look at it this way: Two tanks... 1: 1000 litres with 100kg LR, 20 corals and 20 fish, small skimmer. 2: 2000 litres with 100kg LR, 20 corals and 20 fish, larger skimmer. Tank 1 will have the same nutrient levels as tank 2 due to the waste load produced by the inhabitants and LR, (This a set measurement), however these nutrients are spread out throughout the larger water column and are diluted. The bigger skimmer will pull these out just as fast as the smaller tank and skimmer, as it is rated for more literage. Similar to the air at sea level in contrast to the top of Mt Everest where the air is almost zero.

    diatom bloom

Vodka, when will people listen.... Just chuck the sand in over a few days and run vodka full time for 2 months. It shouldnt even develop.
  5. I dont believe your THEORY Layton, after all that is all it is. You are NOT a scientist and until you can provide a full lecture paper provong your points i feel you are wrong. The last statement about skimmer percentages from Suphew is a perfect example and I believe this theory also. Onbce again, to say that having bigger water voume isnt beneficial is laughable.
  6. Graphs, smaphs, Not all theories and scientific data prove certain points. The simple fact is more water = better. IT HAS TO.
  7. As long as the skimmer gets it its all good. (Doent matter if it takes a bit longer). But as far as the fish/corals are concerened a diluted tank is better for THEM.
  8. Take the first four lines of your thread.... The end...the fish are happier in the second tank with .5 grams and you will get better growth and colour out of your corals.
  9. Hey Pieman, You know your "Homereef" link hasnt worked for about 2 years!!!
  10. I must say I was waiting for Layton....'
  11. Good battle, enjoyed this one!!!
  12. Dunno about that, It would take months, and if you were doing normal water changes, I dont think it would. If it did, ONE 50 % WC would refresh it for another year!
  13. Dilution, dilution, dilution. That is how the OCEAN works.
  14. If it was large enough to keep up before, and you havent added more stock, it will still pull the same but at a different rate. The water will still be more diluted. Look at it this way. a 20,000 litre aquarium with the same amount of livestock as someone with a heavily stocked 1000 litre system. (in other words, one little corner stocked). The inhabitants would NEVER see nitrate or phosphate and you could still use the same skimmer. The skimmer only needs to pull out the waste from the inhabitnats, NOT the water itself.
  15. But now that you have more water vomume, the whole system gains nutrients slower and is controlled easier by the skimmer and the inhabitants are happier.
  16. My sump is my fuge and holds dead coral heads, (Shitloads of them), DSB sections and LR. I have pods from Naam....!!! I have a great belief that dead coral heads convert nitrate to gas far more effectively that plain LR. The reason is that LR is ancient, (Generally), and is a lot more dense. The more permeable dead coral heads allow lots more dinitrifying autotrophic bacteria that LR. (I have read this also). I cannot gain nittrates or phosphates even if I try. The bacteria is too powerful and hungry.
  17. Forget the skimmer, If you add water, the concentration drops. Thats just fact
  18. Yes I do, would you like it?
  19. Not always macro though.
  20. Yes Layton, but the concentration of waset IS diluted i the system water column and the inhabitants of the tank will be grateful of that. The skimmer doesnt care, nor do I for that matter, but the inhabitants do care and the column WILL be more diluted even the the waste concentration is the same. See what I mean?
  21. Agreed, Fuge's usually contain zero coral and fish, and mainly just LR or Live sand. This means the water volume in this portion of the system is almost a non-nutrient factory, therefore assisting the main display by adding volume. The nutirients that end up in this portion are simply passing through from the main display etc. Algae fuges will release fcorms of nutrients ion the form of chlorophyll etc, and can add tanins etc. Rock or sand fuges on the other hand can only be good IMO.
  22. Oh god..... This will be big.....
  23. The dilution effect. More water, more dilution.
  24. I'll get them on there!!!
  25. Something else to think about.... If you have a fuge, then you need a tank, (unless you have a sump and then you use that), But if you add afuge and place sand etc, you are also adding extra water to the system which will counter the bioload in the first place. i.e: add fuge, add 200 litres, add bioload. It cancels each other, so the answer...BENEFIT!!
