    fish room

wow .. gutted.. goodluck with the fix. we got a broken toilet window here and it makes one end of the house rather cold during this season!

    Dark discus

thanks.. bear in mind the good shot was a particularly good photo as you can see the lower photo was not as good but was in a bigger tank so less light and plants. i still reckon it's a nerve damage/bruising issue.. like when someone loses feeling in half of their face after a eyebrow piercing. should come right

    Dark discus

Sounds like internal bleeding/bruising. Check this out.. this was my discus normally: this was my discus after he walked into a bar and said "ow" i only knew this was the case because it cleared up one week later. also some folk on simplydiscus.com suggested it could be that. after seeing this, what do you reckon?

    pH

should only change them 0.2 of a degree in pH every 24 hrs.. bummer

    help

glad to hear no losses! was thinking oh dear badluck with the discus again.. phew. yea just keep an eye on them. how they lookin' now?
  7. 2 of my bros have read Slash's book. Shocking how he couldn't drive anything perfect, so when their manager bought them brand new vans to drive around in he went out and smashed the lights on the front before he drove it. mindless destruction
  8. Respect Some people have one, a few have two, no one has 3.
  9. Lurker Ermmm.. where'd my photo go? :-? Edit.. as it has been mysteriously deleted i will repost it
  10. lemon tetras are on the easy to breed list luckily mine used to breed all the time in ambulia, esp after water changes.. if you collected some rain water use that. light doesn't matter re the eggs hatching tho i'd keep it dim for the frys' eyes. i'd separate males and females to condition for 2 weeks first. sounds like you know the differences between the sexes. have fun and goodluck

    pH

run a bucket of tap water, test pH. test pH 24hrs later.. check for any difference.
  12. thank you for sharing your findings. altho the cost of getting the poly at the start would cost you a bit the savings down the track would soon surpass it (your results show)
  13. hey nic yea i'd say more driftwood for hiding places if they are shy, perhaps add some peat, and they'll be loving the biotype nature of it
  14. i'd say a fan heater would be safer in that submerged aquarium heaters can be affected by water getting inside or jamming on.
  15. cool man. it's really fun to watch them giving birth and seeing new life.
  16. thanks cichlid/stu. so you mean the transition from uninsulated house with a few tanks to a full fishroom heating the room (rather tank by tank) was cheaper?
  17. and then i assume you mean epoxy paint over the sand?
  18. I mean I think you might have missed a word out in the above?? I'm curious what you meant.. do you mean you were running 'more' tanks and your power bill went down???
  19. thanks, sounds like epoxy paint is the way to go, i assume this doesn't come as shiny either?
  20. could you please clarify that sentence stu?
  21. Did some research on the temp... I read that one person experienced their fry not being so active or eating very well at temps lower than 24 degrees celsius. adults are fine between mid to low 20s. Also found this on their ecology: "Water temperature in January was rather low (22-24°C), but as the habitat is very shallow, it would heat up quickly during hot spells and thus D. margaritatus is probably tolerant of temperatures in the low to mid 20s." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celestichthys) And the pics as promised...
  22. have a read of my post here: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/fishro ... 31560.html it would depend how long term you're thinking.. ?
  23. Interesting read.. sounds good matthew goodluck i'd be keen to see the work in progress matthew i'd recommend a good heatpump, they can cool and heat rooms. a fan heater runs at 100% efficiency, whereas heatpumps can run up to 400% efficiency! that is a huge cost over time esp as power prices will likely slowly climb year to year. oh one question, i've observed in a lot of areas now you have to pay for water as a seperate bill, how are people finding this cost in running fishrooms/big tanks in those areas? i assume this would substantially affect the quantity of water changed. for example in Tauranga there's water meters but in Hamilton there isn't; and I believe the price of the rates are similar. In Hamilton I was changing 200L of water a day for my discus. anyone know what that would cost?
  24. So spoon i thought the epoxy was a clear coat shiny finish AFTER the paint? is the epoxy a paint too???
