  1. there are leaf turtles which have been bred in small numbers of late, have seen cogwheels but not for a few years now, could be some out there still?Americans call the boxies turtles but to my way of thinking, although they like a swim and like good bit of mud etc they are way more of tortoise than a turtle? There are 3 toes, and the odd eastern and ornate, also an odd Gulf coast and florida box.Pretty sure there are no more diamond backs left now but you never know what is out there?
  2. rainbow skink, they started off on the shore and have spread from there to all parts, they use the trains to get taken further and further afeild dropping off and colonising new areas.
  3. go see mark or jody at the parrot ranch, they are doing them?if no luck there I can send you a few?how are you going with those cockys?
  4. much better choice, they often seem to like being handled or do not protest at all.
  5. more of a watch and admire than a touchy feely creature,if you want that stuff just get a cat or dog.amphibians have delicate skins and don`t seek out physical affection.
  6. give them time, probably stolen to order, they might be wanting someone higher up the food chain?
  7. give them time, probably stolen to order, they might be wanting someone higher up the food chain?
  8. I have found alot of people seem to like/want them when they are tiny and `cute`? then when they big and start banging around breaking a heater or two they get sick of them and want another little one?You would probably attest to this Donna? These are the ones that end up in your care or down at the local river?
  9. they came in years ago, during 2nd WW if my memory is correct?Avondale race course was setup as a pow camp or un-newzealander camp(aliens)but not the outer space type.Biosecurity was not up to much in them days and the spiders arrived with the peoples gear and spread from there, hence the name avondale spider.
  10. hot stuff!!welcome chilli.
  11. I would like to see one catch a locust?a cockroach would be mission impossible.

  15. hi there, what part of NZ will you be calling home?
  16. probably better that we do our best to avoid related matings where possible.I have 2 unmated females here because I can`t get hold of a male nearby to use and have not had time to make the northward trek.Good that you have bred some for yourself, remember the buzz when the first ones came out of their eggs.
  17. go for the same thing but without the fan, don`t need it for reptiles and they are cheaper??harder to get your humidity right with moving air,not saying it won`t work but the still air are fine for what you want.
  18. if it has been through a brumation more than likely it is.I had a 2 yr beardy that I put out in the sunning pen the other day thinking whats wrong with you you skinny looking thing?have those other 2 been beating you to all the food? When I put them back I moved a plastic plant they have in there and there was a pile of dryed up eggs, she has never been with a male at all and still layed.not even anything to dig in??
  19. Mark Feldman tested a heap of turtles, pond water and turtle eggs from myself and alot of other keepers all over the north island(not sure if got down sth but may have?)the tests were done in a hospital labratory and all came back negative. My turtles are outdoors year round and exposed to all sorts of things such as wild birds overhead and I have been knowen to throw the odd dead chick etc in there at times. There are many different strains and types apparently but it would seem its not as common as purported,I always wash my hands etc all the same and tell others to bear it in mind when handling their animals. I
  20. I let mine out in the backyard and she picks her own place.
  21. locusts from biosupplliers can be bred from.people have had problems getting them going but it is always down to one thing..TEMPERATURE.You can have problems with small ammounts of spray on their food rendering them sterile but 9 times out of 10 egg viability will come down to temp.Just the production of eggs alone is temperature dependant so it goes to follow that sperm production would be the same? You can see it in the colony behaviour if they are active and healthy eating like a swarm of locusts and breeding the same.
