  1. Layton, it's not that I don't believe you, in fact i'd like to believe you. An additional way to control nitrate or phosphate would be a bonus. If you could be reasonable, and offer facts or sound reasoning to back up your conclusion, i could then consider these, and if i agreed with you I'd go a buy a UV, without hesitation. Unfortunately you are not being reasonable. As per my last post, edited to late as you had posted, the title of the thread is UV questions answered. All I did was ask some questions?
  2. just because you say so is not a valid reason, just because you say so is not valid evidence. you, thats right Layton, you started a thread based on your assumption. As a passionate reef keeper and keen member of this board i questioned your evidence and what facts you have based this assumption on. I didn't consider that pointless. Your attempts to discredit me from then on have been useless yes. if i started a thread, a public thread on this board stating that a piece of equipment suddenly dropped my nutrients, and claimed that it is now an indispensible piece of equipment and even stated which brands people should buy, I would expect people to question me, ask what proof i had, etc. I certainly wouldn't blame people for questioning me, tell them that they should look for there own proof, and then rubbish there contribution. the title of this thread is UV questions answered, how ironic.
  3. ok, you win layton Congratulations. Give yourself a pat of the head. You've come up with a statement that may or maybe fact, failed to say why you consider it to be so, failed to offer any valid reason or evidence and proved that I haven't got a valid reason for questioning you and proved once again you are always right. Got to go, rushing out to buy a Deltec UV to lower my Nitrates, even though it probably wont.
  4. The reason, and a valid one, that I don't accept your theory is that you have offered no proof. Again, why come up with a statement, agrue that it is a fact and then fail to offer ANY proof.
  5. These are the facts Layton, you put up a theory that a UV on a marine system will lower nitrates. Others disagreed e.g. you reply is that we should prove it ourselves. and your asking me to base it on a valid reason???

don't worry steve, I'll stick to the aquamedic. Like the fact the are rated to run 24/7 as I'm planning to use 1 for my Ca reactor - take away the need to reset every few days.
  7. good point JDM, bit of a puzzle?? and I know what you mean, been called a newbie by others just because i only posted in this forum in the last year or 2. Been doing marine tanks sice i was still at high school, 20 odd  + years ago.

what washing machines have them Wasp??, friends got a simpson thats just stopped working?? :-?
  9. Mine took a good 6 months, but have a full tank of corals and fish, feed well and haven't had a detectable nitrate reading for over a year.
  10. once your tank matures You wont have a nitrate issue JDM. The rock will take care of it, all other things being balanced.

Had a good run with an Aquamedic sp300. No problems with it so far.
  12. Don't make assumptions about me or other people on this site Layton. I spend alot of time researching all aspects of this hobby, and attribute my success to this. I take full responsibility for for my personal learning, and the fact I post on this forum, alot less that alot, no way hinders this. The only evidance you posted was some obscure quote from a drinking water study, and this is your scientific research?. waste of time discussing this with you as you have a real problem communicating without trying to belittle, or insult people.
  13. oh come on Layton, "what UV does the world over", must be a tune to go with that line.
  14. time of the year maybe , no offence meant after discussing refugiums for a period with Layton, got the same old response from him then - "i don't have to prove I'm right" "www.google.com", " don't be a sheep" etc. I would seriously consider using a UV if there was a sound reason to and i thought it would be good for my tank. I'm yet to see any "proven scientific theory" on his claims and no doubt wont.
  15. post just to wind up, rich coming from you TM. Anything constructive to add to the discussion? Blah blah blah maybe. Layton, I am trying to establish the reason why you have come out and posted that running a UV will not only help keep pests, parasites and free floating bacteria levels down but improve water quality. And if it does why it is not well known, given it would be a great addition to any aquarium if that was so. And posting photos of your tank would at least prove that you can and do run a successful and healthy tank, with thriving corals and add more weight to the systems and processes you run, wouldn't you agree.
  16. I know how to google, don't be a smart arse. Your proof comes down to the fact that I can't prove your wrong. I have no facts that prove your facts are wrong. I dont let anyone draw conclusions for me, hence why I'm asking you to provide anything that backs up your argument. You wont or can't. Well done Layton, proved absolutely nothing again and resorted to childish posts like your last 2.
  17. and why do the 4 out of TOTM use them?. I doubt they have any problems with Nitrate or Phosphate control....
  18. Because I seen no facts, studies, articles, books to back up your claims. What research Layton?. Its is not the fact that UV has it's uses, but more your assertion in what it actually does especially that it lowers Nitrate.
  19. You never post photos Layton, got to wonder why. Ignorance from people far more experienced and successful than you, come off it layton, just like your zeovit and refugium arguments. And to compare yourself to the likes of Fenner, please. I note Borneman, who you often quote never mentions this ability of UV to reduce nitrates and phosphates in any of his material, nor anyone else that i can find, except some obsure reference you dug up from the internet. It's not that i don't believe it has worked in your tank, but to try and believe that the majority of marine aquarists don't use it because of misinformation and ignorance, come off it. It is one thing promoting alternatives or new ideas, but to state them in the way you do as fact is wrong.
  20. You say indespensible as far as you are concerned. If they are as good as you are trying to make out, why isn't everyone using them to control nutrients. Only 2 of the last 9 TOTM on reef central use them. Don't know if any of the top tanks in NZ use them....Reef, Pies, cracker, westy ?? How about some before and after photos of you tank, showing the improvements, before everyone rushes out buying Deltec UVs on your scant evidence.
  21. The exact reason i posted this.
  22. this from Bob fenner, obviously doesn't have Laytons limitless knowledge, but worth a read..
  23. You can even remove the taps on a deltec if you need more air, but agree with reef, Deltec's really suck alot of air and you more generally need to restrict the intake, not increase it.
  24. good stuff Duke, looking sharp. Corals look healthy and so does the PBT
