  1. Something I thought about doing, find a good rockpool, close to low tide, up here in the BOI, and attach a piece of acro (a fast growing stg) and see how it goes over summer - the water is a consistant 22-23 degrees up here. ....and what are you doing on the forum at 2:00am in the morning Wasp
  2. There are no safe short cuts in this hobby. If your tank is going through the expected algae/cyno cycles, then let it and be patient. red slime remover, vodka, and any other snake oil products are just patches, temporary solutions. Keep siphoning it out, make sure your skimmer is working well, plenty of water changes etc and it will eventually go. IMO, reef tanks take between 1-2 years to mature, and it's the wrong hobby if you don't have the patience to wait.
  3. Yes, you need sperm and eggs, and my fish don't eat them, yours must be nasty ones Conch
  4. The smaller ones are probably just a small type snail every one has - hundreds come out every night and they don't get any bigger. Your astreas are spawning - hopefully more than one - then you will probably get baby astreas but they are different and you'll know when you see them as they are perfect minitures of the big ones (little cones). You don't have to do anything special, they'll just grow. My astreas have spawned 3 times - and i have now the big ones, some about half that size, some babys 3-4mm high, and waiting for the babies of the last spawning to show.
  5. You mean the limestone slabs I used as reef support??? If so it was always just a matter of time before they looked like the rest. The clam started as a baby about 70mm long Thanks for your comments all, it's got a way to go yet, but is slowly maturing nicely.
  6. best I could get....
  7. thx reef, will try to get a decent full frontal, its always the hardest shot to get!!
  8. yea, remember that tanks 1 metre wide

    Some photos

Bit of a update, and some photos. Tanks going well, coraline growing well, still a bit of algae and cyno about, but keeps diminishing, month to month. Tends to coat some of the coraline at times, but tangs love it and its slowly going. Calcium and Alk being sucked out of water at an ever increasing rate, dosing as well as having cal Rx cranked up to full - awaiting big mutha aquamedic reactor!!. Corals doing very well, surprisingly well, acros growing alot, and colours just keep getting better. Now some pics, not great pics but you'll get the idea..... A green acro, doubled in size and you can see it encrusting the rock.. This is a hynophora frag Kevin gave me a few months back, it's gone berserk, and is the size of a large grapefruit This one is an incredible colour, that I just can't get the vcamera to reproduce, the top down shot later on gives a better idea, Its growing fast, and colour continues to surprise me. This was a smal bown coral purchased a couple of months ago, The big clam, going crazy with growth and colour.. Couple of end shots.... and front and a flash shot of flash himself and some nice top down shots....
  10. Schools of tangs, angels, triggers???????? and apparently you don't need a skimmer - whatever!! The money you save on lights and flow etc on a big FO tank should go into the skimmer.
  11. Try HFF, seen Iodine test kits often. Benefits are unproven, and results subjective. IMO regular water changes should be all you need.
  12. Thanks Swampy, saw the briefs and really wanted to catch it.
  13. My CBS and Cleaner shrimp live together under my arch with no probs. My other CBS is in the refugium, after recovering from leg, claw and feeler removal.
  14. Like I said, i don't believe it was 700kg of live stony corals, rather live and dead coral rock?? Maybe Reef can find what the clown was really importing.
  15. Reading that, you wonder whether it was actual corals or live rock?? Corals are not going to survive a container trip, and thats an awful lot of hitchhikers on SPS corals?
  16. it is, I've got one, very nice fish.
  17. I agree with reef, nice corals, healthy and colourful, but crikey, looks like a shop tank selling acros, how are the corals going to grow a couple of mm, let alone cms ??? Chemical free  , just like mine.
  18. Funny, my better half calls it the geek website as well :-?

What happened to the poor sailfin?
  20. Your tank doesn't look mature, how long has it been running?? Bit of patience needed sometimes, your tank won't mature for well over 12months, and you'll get outbreaks up until then.
  21. that makes it up to 40 X ?? Mine is 2 Tunze 6100s, 2 tunze 6201s, both on the multicontroller, but only pulse between 80% and 100%. One 6080 on full time, 2 wavyseas contolling the return flow from a sequence Hammerhead at around 14000l/hr (conservative) Water volume - 1600l
