  1. Least you will be used to one of Melbournes weather extremes and you can get a lion fish for $20.
  2. My blue tang moves things. It moved a small clam from the bottom right side of a 4 foot tank, to the top left side. Took me 30+ minutes of searching.
  3. I use Instant Ocean and tap water. Auckland water is pretty damn good. You can't compare it to US water. Sure go for the filter if the $$$ and desire are there but with fish only I don't think there will be a difference. Anyone done a phosphate test on the Auckland tap water? Oh, and we sell 20kg's for $119.95 +$5 if you want it delivered.
  4. Cost of raising kids was on TV yesterday morning. Ranged from about $45,000 to $218,000. The $218,000 included 100,000 for a uni education. Keep your kids dumb. Much cheaper.
  5. Kim (who used to run Pupuke Aquarium) had a siamese fighter that was left (by accident) in its shipping bag for two weeks, unheated. They get shipped in a cup of water max and the same volume of air. I bet you an aptasia could go a long, long, long time.
  6. Just counted more than 20 living in the rough side of my floating magnet glass cleaner. An easy catch anytime.
  7. My tank must be absolutely filthy. Picked up a rock the other day and all the sand bed underneath was moving, there were that many worms making the great escape. Recenty I have notice heaps of mystus shrimp running around in the open. I think this has more to do with no major predatory fish rather than the tank being dirty. When I had a large wrasse in then tank (and more fish than now) you would never see anything running around when the lights were on. It was a killing machine.
  8. Brush on black board paint. If is a large tank you will go through a lot of cans - I used 4 on a 4 foot. 1 litre of brush on costs about $60 and will do heaps of tanks.
  9. How about a quickfilter attachment for an Aquaclear powerhead. http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/product.cfm?CAT=1&SUBCAT=119&PROD_ID=01005750030101 You could use it with or without the insert.

    Finding nemo

Dead things can disappear very quickly. If you have an anemone and the clown died in it then I would not be suprised if it ate it. Otherwise all the invert scavengers get to work.

    salt mix

Should be good as good. As Reef said it needs mixing overnight. I would mix it up at least a day before and use a powerhead or airstone to move the water. Undissolved salt can do a lot of damage to corals if it lands on them. The pH also takes a while to stabilize.
  12. I had a big grey worm appear recently in a predator fish free tank. What I could see out of the rock was a good 10cm long, 8mm wide. It was sticking out eating fish food that had landed on the rock while the lights were on. Haven't seen it since and probably never will. My tank at home crawls with worms.
  13. I used boiling water injected into them. If that did not do the trick then I would put a small rock over them. It normally makes them move onto the small rock and then you just remove the rock.

    Ozone

It kills them if they are floating in the water being treated.
  15. CO2 levels in the water have no impact on oxygen levels in the water.
  16. No, he has not grown at all. The female was twice as big. I had three common clowns as well. All about 4cm long at best who lived in a finger coral. As soon as I got them their own anemone, two paired off and chased the other away. It had been happy families up till then. The two then started growing, literally over night. It became obvious wo the female was. The male clarki I have has no reason to change.
  17. Females are always bigger than the males. Male clowns will/can change sex to female. I think it is a one way change so once a girl, always a girl. If you get juveniles, one will go male, one will go female, the others will stay juvenile and be driven away by the pair.
  18. Might buy two lotto tickets today. Will need a bigger house and budget for that tank! Great idea having the refuge above the tank so it gravity feeds. So many fish......
  19. I have a male blue line clarki. Not as dark as your one. Did have a female. Very large, VERY aggressive. Couldn't add any new fish once she was in there and she was good at attacking your hand. I have had the male for about six years.
  20. http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/product.cfm?CAT=1&SUBCAT=107&PROD_ID=01002000030101 There is alos a product manual you can down load. All good for saltwater.
  21. I have heaps of live rock in the tank as well. I use the cannisters for surface skimming, water movement and holding filter media. Weigh that sucker down! It will lift it. I heard about one in a research lab that was getting out of its tank at night, crossing the floor, getting into another tank to feed and then returning to its own tank. Would copper have a major effect on an octopus since their blood is copper based not iron?
  22. Your cannister should be fine. My tank runs on two (and no skimmer). Just tested the water, all good. No phosphate. Have not tested nitrate but zero algae so I am not overly concerned. I take it you mean stuff for in the cannister filter? You get what you pay for. Sinter glass is probably the best but also the most expensive. I would put a phosphate absorber in the cannister filter and a sponge over the intake to stop large chunks of crap getting in there. It will keep the media a lot cleaner and stop it clogging. You are going to need a well sealed up tank to keep an octopus. Any small hole and that sucker will be out. I would be very careful with powerheads as well. Don't want it going thru one.

    ummmm???

If it looks as good as the picture I would buy it!
  24. I used to have a pair of coral banded. They were great. Walked around the tank bottom all day. The male would find food and take it to the female. When she did we got another female but they never acted the same. She was very shy so they hid a lot more. The male took on a little lobster I had and lost one front claw. Still went back for more. Gave up when he had lost both big claws and all but one leg on one side.
  25. Whow, those softies and the anemone have really grown!!! The anemone is a good example of how much they change colour. It has really browned up. That clam doesn't seem to open much. Would it not do better further from the dump bucket where there is a little less current?
