tradme sometimes, about $80-$110 every 2 years for a membrane maybe less and about $60 a year in DI resin if you make a LOT of water..... Peter
-
how often power go off for say 20secs? normally brown out, 2-3 seconds or minutes.... if minutes the water in the sump should keep the pump fully primed????? cash going into your acc today for the iwaki 40 mate.. u see it tomorrow morning.

the new fangled machine reads 0.42 on my tank..... now you have to multiply by 0.747 to get ppm phosphate so that makes my tank reading 0.31 ppm once i have tested enough other tanks, i will know if this is high or not...... all the guides say run your tank below 0.15ppm for optimal results. don't worry reef, the tax man going to help me pay for my hanna.....

my flight now 6am tomorrow so... i can do a fresh RO/DI makeup in a very clean glass jar, leech the vial for 4-5 hours... then retest..... brendan... how is my tank... around mid 0.3's ppm for a non zeo tank is this low? I know that it should be under 0.15 but how many have you ever tested using the hanna and got that reading? I am going to obviously start regular testing so i can establish a trend, and also must test my NSW source for sanity..... but the more i read about NSW the better it seems. As long as you have a good location to collect from (read good flush zone) and no runnoff for a while. I have brought a $130 1000L barrys bin for storing the saltwater under the house... about the same as a bag of saltmix, so I will be able to be picky about when i collect....... I am convinced my tank is looking much better with the NSW changes and will continue with them I really believe that the hanna colorimeter is a better way to get an accurate Phosphate reading then a hobby kit. I am happy to do a double blind testoff have learnt as an engineer to trust the test kit. I am also quite convinced that a lot of the phosphate getting into the tank is from the food we add.... going to do some tests there as well 8)

reads 0.05 for RO/DI so by 0.747 thats 0.037 ppm Phosphate coming through RO/DI wow, thats impressive..... this friday i test the sea water at Takapuna.....

the new fangled machine reads 0.42 on my tank..... now you have to multiply by 0.747 to get ppm phosphate so that makes my tank reading 0.31 ppm still a little high but an acurate reading i believe... will test my ro/di water asap and report back.

no aptasia... not one..... none

i cleaned my skimmer last week, took everything apart includingb needle wheel pumps to clean, made a huge difference in its output, is really running well again.... am starting to look at large offcuts of irrigation pipe and DIY, thinking that none of it really needs to be clear and that something quite effective could be built very cheaply. there will be pics coming. I also manged to get hold of 155 square foot of 10mm glass yesterday for $150 big bits too, so now i am after some cheap through fittings! anyone?
-
Brendan has some very low P carbon, but said the Jansens brand is fine, says very impotant to test as some named brands leach badly. Pies i talk to you about your source, sounds cheap, would like to test it......
-
Anyone in the Auckland area operate a medium/large fishroom? I am looking for ideas.... Can you please PM me.
-
where do you get your carbon from? how much for what ammount.... have you tested for phosphate release?
-
i was just at Jansens and Hollywoods Hollywoods display tank is looking very good IMHO. Average prices for corals where about $60-70 ish each my tank is the same size as Hollywoods, that tank has about 100 corals in it. in general i think prices have moved down slightly

will prob end up ringing the munufacturer..... or just trying to get the titanium tube in.....
-
I have an undercounter guiness cololer, it uses a 1/2 hp motor to cool water in a small tank, and has a loop system for the water to be colled that passes through this tank,,, the loop system is removable and is either stailess or titanium... it works and is on my things to do list this month........ before it gets to hot..... cost me 50 quid in london boot sale ages ago I have a US source for titanium tubing if it proves to be stainless, anyone know how to test this????? Layton.... this underground tubing system is being used in the US in florida in green house frag farms, i get the link... not sure what pipe they are using, but it is worth a look as many of us have a bit of garden and a spare pump...... i will find the piccies link tonight Peter
-
Pies i will be back in WGTN tuesday night, how about a glimpse of you tank wed night? test then? Peter
-
but to be fair, biosecurity in general is a big issue for NZ... i don'tr think they make me go out of my way, compared with anyone else.....
-
I have seen a few green house setups that lay pipe in the ground about 5ft deep and have say a 50-100ft loop, you could use irrigation piping...... then just pumop the water through this as the ground is a good heat sink at this level,, ever dug a hole.... quite cold at 5ft deep used commercially...... got me thinking......
-
I will def go tonight, was going to last night but got chatting with Brendan - (i am difficult to get rid of!!!!) and time passed.......... No not a zeovertz convert yet, just interested in all the opinions out there....... But its time to get a 200L barrel from barry and go collecting! I want to get some glass shrimps for my beta as well! where is the best place close to north shore?
-
we are not worthy.............. now back on topic.... landed cost + 50% + shipping to reef keeper! no conveniane, no browsing through tanks looking for a bargin. no supporting beginners (like to see any other hobby where the more experienced hobbist is expected to support the newbies financially!) just cheap corals and fish.... This will grow the hobby faster then anything else.

i am doing the mushroom thing this weekend. 1. cut off the main body of mushroom leaving the stork attached to rock. 2. chope up mushroom and place over large rock chips in a shallow petri type dish 3. cover with fine netting and place into low flow rate area of tank..... 4. Leave for 3-4 weeks. Glue the new little mushie frags onto a piece of LR. 5 wait a while and flog on trademe 8)

have grolsh and corona on tap....... ok, lets have a who has the highest phosphate competition! you have my address, will be home from 6pm onwards......

Almost all the wholesalers I have seen do it in their garage, in a semi-biz semi labour of love, often for interest and personal reasons, tho try to make a small profit to cover time and expenses. All the Auckland based wholesalers I have known supplimented there income from "real" jobs. Almost all the retailers I have seen run a tight business model and do it to feed there family and put kids through uni. It is a lifestyle choice but they have to eat. This is there business. Some are so large they have a team of admin people. Where is all the money made, who are we as hobbists supporting, who are really supporting us. Reef is doing more then anyone else in AKL for the marine hobby. full stop. end of deal. He does more for some of us then others. Seems from here that Pies, me and most others have no issue with wholesale prices, tho we believe there is always room for competition. We believe that the wholesaler takes all the risk...... is normally a hobbist not a professional! For the record, I am talking to MAF about transit facility approval. Small unit, small shipments. Starting the same way as many others. Why? why did you start your first tank.... why the second...... just because......
-
I have purchased Brendans Hanna Phosphate meter. I am happy to vist your tank , in the AKL area and test your phosphate, swap frags and generally talk sh*t for hours about reef tanks... Warning: I can be hard to get rid of. The meter is Very accurate........

would it be possible to change this thread to NSW around NZ then others could post here as well, I would be happy to test AKL on both a good day and after a week of rain
