    Skimmer Decisions

I agree, i skimmers like deltec there may be no need. Queen skimmers, sure this is the only way you can get them to work. But one would assume that the skimmer used on abalone would be huge, like one of the YK2 skimmers. Adding a air pump or blower may really help.

    Skimmer Decisions

Yes this would be right. Well it would be if it is quite alarge skimmer. Even smaller skimmers will benifit from this, depending on the quality of the venturi

    Potassium supplement

As far as i no there are no tests for this. Would a lab be able to test for this easily. Potassium is something you don't hear to much about, strange, its up there on the list of elements that are in seawater. ELEMENT PPM IN SEAWATER Chloride 18980 Sodium 10561 Magnesium 1272 Sulfur 884 Calcium 400 Potassium 380
  4. Posted this on Reefcentral a few days ago, but Habib has not got back to me. No major drama, just wondering why its happening. I have a calcium kit that gives me a result of 410. When i use the strontium kit it says my calcium is at 320 (about) I have repeated the test 5 times and get the same results. I know it is hard to test for strontium but would you not think the calcium would be the same in both tests. Why is there such a difference? Am i doing something wrong? Is the test old, exp date is all good. Habib (reefcentral Yes i did. Batch Numbers STR (pc1710) CA (ac08980e)
  5. Is anyone dosing a Potassium supplement. Would i be right in thinking that in a low nutrient environment and with the addition of carbon sources for bacterial processes (probio), the various trace elements, especially K become more available to be skimmed out, causing a rapid depletion of this element.

    Temperature probe

There was a thread awhile ago that had this info. From what i no, it is easy/cheap to get a controller that heats and cools. But heaps more for one that heats, and has two cool setpoints. You should be able to pick one up at rexel.

    Chemicals

Same I have looked into it down here (i may have been calling the wrong places) and it was really dear hundreds for Analytical grade stuff (99.99% pure). Thats why i was looking into the stuff for pools. Thats cheaper than the stuff from the pool place. Where do you get this stuff from. Can you get a spec sheet for it.

Chemicals Has any one used the poolmaster range of chemicals to dose to there aquarium? Mainly the calcium chloride and sodium bicarb. I want to make up "randys two part system". Any thoughts, they seem to be better than the dows stuff they use in the states. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/ ... 4/chem.htm

    Skimming

I am sure they would have done a heap of testing. However you may find that if you do put a bit more water thru the preformance may only drop a little bit. maybe less than 5% (guess) but you may take out stuff you wouldn't have if you had used the 1000ltr rec by deltec. goes both ways though. Also something to think about is say if you were to drop the amount of water going thru by say half, This would mean you would get a better dwell time - thus in theory producing a better quality load of crap... would it not? How about this, not true numbers though. 500ltr dark dark dark crud but not much collected 1000ltr (rec by deltec) dark dark crud and a good amount collected 1500ltr dark crud and a large amount collected. I spose the answer the the question is to have 2 skimmers.
  18. I use 6mm no problems with strength, since it is up the top of the aquarium. You only really need to use 10mm glass over 450mm high.
  19. If your overflow box is made well it has the same chance of leaking as the rest of your tank. The first overfloe i described (and on my tank) has the holes right up the top aswell.
  20. I have set up a few tanks with this style of overflow. IT WORKS, if you don't belive me come to my house and see. I think the way i have it set up is quiter than a durso. (compare with joeblog durso) By having an overflow syphon will be quiter than a durso. My first design which you will be able to see on "new reef tank" thread, has 2 25mm pipes coming out from the back right hand cornor. The overflow box holds about 3ltr of water and is completly sealed from the main tank. The first over flow has an elbow with a piece of pipe going to the bottom of the overflow box. This is the one that syphons. the second hole has nothing on it, and the water just trickels over. The over flow box, as per photos. Is only about 15cm high in the back right cornor. Sweet no noise. The second, as per the diagram feelers put up, works just as well. Difference being the holes are in the bottom of tank. one of the holes does not have any pipe pushed in. The second has about 6inch of pipe.(assuming total height of tank is 12" top of over flow is at 10". No need to put any taps on this. If you want to stop the flow turn your pump off. Sweet no noise. Both these ways work, just depends where you want your holes drilled. Heaps cheeper than dursos, and just as safe. Will through a photo up soon.

    New Skimmer

three main reasons 1. The cooler air helps make smaller bubbles 2. The pressure is lower down there (low pressure down, high pressure up) 3. The fungi spores from the rotting fish food help feed the tank.
