I'd still like to see! I thought a hundred babies in a tank looked cool. Imagine a thousand!

I remember a few years back Wet pets in palmy used to always have ''giant'' guppy's but i found they where quite plain. I have some largish females, but nothing like the size the wet pet store had. Would be really keen to get my hands on some now actually.

1000! That's impressive! Surely you took photos?

That's a neat guppy! Fingers Crossed

Lol what a joke, try Europe or the states. That's a big job. I read an article at the time that suggested a government conspiracy and another that suggested the end of the world. Just comes down to what you'd rather believe. But fact remains fact, "highly likley" isn't a 100% Of course! I was hoping to get a baby possum next year. I would love to keep NZ species as pets but unfortunatly thats often illegal aswell. Like i said.. Ignorance! No worries your forgiven lol Cheers

Do they though? I mean really... We aren't a huge country! and it always seems that there is a breakdown of information which results in "results" that are less than desirable to New Zealand's people. I think to ban something like a hamster is more on the ignorance side of the fence than the safety side. Agreed though that there always needs to be lengthy procedures when introducing new species and unfortunately it comes down simply to funding and resources.

Well if your ever down wellington ways, I'll be happy to give you a big handful of plants. I find plenty of plants in the tanks also help stabilize and regulate a healthy and natural environment. Mops are usually used for egg scatterers or non-annual killifish but i guess you could have it setup to simulate plants.

From the picture you can tell she is definitely pregnant or "gravid", if they have been in the same vicinity as any male guppy they usually are already "packet-ed", which basically means that they have been fertilized and will continue to drop fry every 4-6 weeks. See that dark spot by her anal fin? that will grow and grow, until she looks like she will burst. That dark patch is actually all the little eyes of the fry growing inside her, clustered together in one spot. With any livebearer i use the same formula, plenty of high quality food (be careful not to over feed) and plenty of small regular water changes, plant your tanks out and watch the family grow. Cheers

Its only after giving birth that a female can take on new packets from other males, or if she is virgined, until then she holds the packets from the male that fertilized the current batch of young growing inside her, the males can sense this and are often very aggressive pursuers after a female has dropped. To my knowledge the female has no control over whether she accepts new packets or older packets, its just simple survival. Cheers

one of the dangers of working at a pet store, the pets

Perfectly said! Any dog can be unpredictable, even well trained dogs! the difference is the kind of damage a Pomeranian can do when it bites, compared to a large breed dog. I have a rotti cross and he is beautiful and has a lovely nature, he just doesn't realise how powerful he is, which can sometimes get him into trouble. These are animals! they have animal instincts as much as we try to domesticate, you get in its face and it perceives you as a threat and it will react in accordance with its nature. Pretty simple really -

This is only based on what i have noticed with my livebearers over the years and different attempts to interbreed: Accept for male guppy's "attempting" to breed with everything, including other male guppy's, I've witnessed no cross breeding or even interest in inter breeding out with another specie of livebearer within long established tanks of mixed livebearers (swordtails, platties, guppy's, mollies and leopards), Infact I've witness small amounts of hostility between some of the species, not enough to cause concern, but enough to make you curious. This has included tanks with a single male platy and only female swords, single male platy and only female guppy's, almost no interest displayed by the male. However switch it up with a male swordtail and only female platties and the male will produce interest and most likely fertilize (offspring show little or no difference to normal accept for colour manipulation). No interest displayed by the male however with only female guppy's. Mollies and guppy's hardly acknowledged each others exsistance in all scenarios and leopards always kept to themselves no matter the situation. Male swordtails and male platties show little interest to female mollies and vice versa, male mollies with only female platties or swordtails do show interest but offspring never produced molly traits, about 80% sure of no fertilization. Male mollies and only female guppy's - again no interest. Mollies and guppy's will live great together without interbreeding and with low aggression, almost every livebearer commonly available (bar leopards) love a bit of salt, mollies can just cope with higher concentrations happily and having salt in a tank with guppy's and mollies is more likely to keep a few common diseases away. Pack your tank full of plants as well and you'll be more likely to keep some of your guppy fry, molly's grow big and have big mouths, guppy fry is food when they are older. Cheers

Mine are doing great, got a small bunch and now i have a tank full. They don't breed in big numbers but they have no interest in their fry. I find new babys every couple weeks, looking forward to filling all my tanks with them. They are one of the few livebearers that seem to prefer only freshwater, no salt added and have far more personality than guppys. Its easy to tell between guppy and leapord fry, the small leapords start off with a cute little tiny black dot about a mil horizontally behind the eye. I do 10% water changes every 2 days and feed them heavily with live and frozen food. they grow at about the same rate as guppys being given the same conditions. Very easy to breed and a great fish

Bluey my female guppie has done it again!
livebearer_breeder replied to sunrise001's topic in Livebearers
Can be plenty of reasons though, poor diet and bad water qaulity can cause alot of stress on the female, also just because shes blue doesnt mean all the babys will be. Best thing you can do is setup a good sized tank with regular water changes (one 'key' to growth) and plenty of plants and let them do thier thing Looking forward to photos, I have some blues growing out at the momment aswell. Guppys rock Cheers -
All I need is a fry and a much bigger aquarium

Cool Article! Wish i could go catch some

I could be wrong, but doesn't the colour of the water have something to do with the colours in the light spectrum that can travel through our atmosphere? Thus Blue skys? don't quote me though I would say that the best way would to be to find some lighting with the right kelvin rating that are more in the blue/green spectrum and as people have previously said, perhaps paint the tank the colour you fancy aswell! Very excited to see how you go though, post pictures if you have success! Cheers

I used to just use an old school glue stick so that the background stayed tight. But i do think that paint looks the best!

Your local hobby hydroponics shop has stuff called panda wrap, black on one side, white on the other, $5 a metre, thats folded over itself, so you get 2m for $5. I've still got heaps left over for new tanks. Cheers

I think im gonna risk two I've got fert and flourish and Co2. If it doesn't work out its not hard for me to take a bulb out. Cheers Guys
-
Cheers Sam, so are two 24 watt bulbs going to be too much? I want to grow plants not algae? I've got some old JBL vert balls I never used that I was going to put in the substrate and I made an old school DIY Co2 bottle thingy mabob, but for the life of me I cant find my little nano diffuser anywhere, nor did I see any at the pet stores down here, Anyone know where I can purchase one of these? Its a little glass jobby with a white diffuser disk, makes tiny tiny little bubbles, works great I found, better than running the co2 threw a impeller or bubble stone. Cheers LB
