  1. Phillips were the ones i was looking at Sam, maybe it was just the packaging but they looked the best! (also abit more expensive than the rest) and had longer life spans than the cheaper ones.
  2. I'll check tomorrow, basically I should just be getting whatever is rated at 6500k? From memory its 420mmx280mmx280mm, which means that it’s actually only about 30l? This is kinda like a test run so I’m comfortable with making a bigger one. Real simple design, no fancy stuff. However it does look quite chunky lol the tank is so small and the rimu is 30ml. Not sure if you know, but ripping 30ml rimu with a skilly is pretty impossible, so next time I might look at some 20ml custom board and just give it a few coats of acrylic to seal it (I have a few of the same sized tanks, used to be in my racks in the fishroom). Is also far more forgiving and easy to work with than rimu, you just don’t get that classy timber finish though. So would two bulbs for that size tank be overkill? I just want heaps of light so I can grow anything, I’ve never been able to keep anything fancier than crypts, cabomba etc Cheers LB
  3. so just to double check, 100watts worth (2x 24watt) is good or overkill? tank is only 35-40l lol
  4. Argh yup sorry, your right Ira, thanks heaps Sweet cool daylight it is. I didn't see any 100watt ones? the highest was 24 watt (that i could see) and they start getting abit bulky in size, Ill get 2x 24 watt cool daylights today then and start sanding the rimu for a coat of poly. Cheers Guys
  5. Started on it last night. Ripped apart an old set of rimu drawers, to make the hood and base. The energy saver fluros have a bunch of diffrent Watts from like 10 to 24, whats best? also some say cool light, day light and warm light. So I'm guessing someone can tell me which is ideal? fingers crossed anyways Cheers
  6. You thought wrong  Yeah he rekons it'll take him 5 minutes if I build the hood first
  7. Yeah sorry used the wrong word, thanks Ira. Just puchased some glosso so will see how it goes. Will head to bunnings tomorrow and buy what I need Cheers
  8. yup like these, http://www.fnzas.org.nz/index.php?PG=nativefish&NID=GO6 lots of colour variations other than this one though. They are pretty coool
  9. Finally settled back in wellington Went round to my parents and picked up some tanks and gear from the fishroom a few weeks ago, Missed having tropicals so much! Got the internet at my new place aswell so that makes things very handy Its good to be able to flick through these forums again, always helpful!
  10. yeah a couple years back i got a big tub of glosso off trademe only to discover it was ridden with little creatures that infected and multiplyed in the tank, so out that went. I've seen it in local creeks here but am abit worried that it would be the same deal all over again. With the glosso could you have used a product like algae clear? I used to lightly dose that occasionally in a heavily planted tank and it would destroy any algae bloom and didnt seem to harm the plants. Also if anyone lives near lake waikaremoana, i was there last year over new years and got fist fulls of Christmas moss and ambulia! theres also some really cool little freshwater fish that look like gobbys, with many colour variations, anyone know what they are? Cheers
  11. Im impressed! Hoping it'd be enough for glosso? I've never been able to keep hairgrass alive, so im guessing if that light can do that, easier plants like ambulia, cobomba (sp?), star grass, crypts, valis and sag would do fine? I Just love heavily planted tanks. Cheers
  12. No Harm Done Would still like to know what the output/ plant growth is like with these? Cheers
  13. Lol, are you joking or what? I asked a question, Re: the post above, yes someone else would do it. Cheers
  14. Who said i was? Good advice, lucky my sparky mates already agreed to do it. Cheers
  15. Awesome idea! economical and cheap! Would this work in series? for example 3 or 4 eco bulbs off a single power supply? and whats the output/plant growth like with these bulbs? Cheers LB
  16. will they breed sweet in 25c?
  17. do they cope better in cold water, tropical or inbetween? Have seen a bunch at thepetcentre here (ex hutt pet centre) and think they are wicked but have never kept them? I knew a bloke who used to keep and breed them with guppys and swordtails in 25c here in the hutt!? so it must be possible? Cheers LB
  18. Wow! ive heard about this but never seen it! Sounds abit like the Balloon versions of fish you can get here, mutants basically. Not an avid supporter of this but would still be interested to see. Have kept guppys and platys together for years and havn't managed to make a super guppy yet lol LB
