  1. yeah havent seen a FTS of reefs new aquascape, best thing is the amount power heads needed is far less cause higher flow is easier to create with less rock blocking it
  2. good to know wasp, thanks for doing that. (your time benefits everyone) be interesting to find out how more expensive brands compare.
  3. so if skimming "wet" is of no advantage how come so many people have that idea. one of the prerequisites of BB for most people is doing just that? lets hear what layton says, according to what he said before he is skimming wet compared to pies.
  4. itll cost about 130 more just for the front
  5. well after a talk to greg (the tank builder) ive changed the bracing alittle slightly smaller bracing around the top but with a added centre brace. also changed it so that the front glass viewing panel is diamante glass (dont tell the wife, ill just tell her i cleaned it more)
  6. not trying to judge the skimmer by the skimmate as much as i'am judging the skimmate, the whole wet/dry/dark/light thing is what im trying to sortout. because i might be BB obviously i should skim wet but how wet is the ideal wetness? where does skimming become inefficient where does it peak etc....
  7. thats from the sides right?? what does the stuff in the cup look like?
  8. i heard that the BK's take a bit of fiddling. can you guys take a pic of what you call thick skimmate.
  9. which Bk model do you have reef? i remember you had one and that you prefered the deltec, i tried looking for the thread but i couldnt find it.
  10. a protein skimmer does exactly what its name suggests, it skims out protein from the water. (this doesnt really have an equivilant in fresh water tanks) calcium reactor is a "luxury item" that you wouldnt really need unless your serious about keeping stoney corals refugium is a tank away from the main tank for rocks algae fish etc, more common is a sump for storing equiptment that you dont want in the main tank (skimmer heaters extra rock) if your serious about a marine tank by all means come on over next week when ive got the new tank as things will make more sence
  11. nooooo, my house is too messy at the moment. (baby+newfishtank construction = messy house= grumpy wife= more money to set it up quicker and get rid of mess.)
  12. anyone else want to pipe in?? there more than one skimmer around
  13. might pay to look on their website and get the ####s cause chances are they will not have any idea about what your looking for
  14. so layton seems to have a higher fish load, but the skimmate is similar. do you think your skimmers would pull out more if your tanks where stocked heavier???
  15. do you mean like a spray nozzle?? i think Blackwoods & Paykels are supposed to carry some Loc line parts (nice spray nozzles like steve has)
  16. how do your bio loads compare, (considering you have the same skimmer)
  17. is that wet skimmate or similar to this? (sounds like the deltec compares well)
  18. Hey Can some of you guys post some pics of how much skimmate you get from your skimmers (deltec, berlin, aquamedic, diy) just stumbled along this pic on the zeovit forum of what a BK pulled out in 2 days, i understand they are the top of the line but id like to see if anything comes close
  19. rotifers are zooplankton. there are different strains of phytoplankton though and some are more suitable than others.
  20. do you mean Phytoplankton or macro algae??? by the way, not a weird question should i have a bare bottom, now thats a weird question
  21. i think what people are trying to get at micheal is that the cost of 3x 6' tanks vs not gettting you as much as advantage as you would if your where to spend the same money on a bettter skimmer or calcium reactor or lighting or countless other things.
  22. the thing that doesnt register with me is the fact that you are all talking about size of the tank helping with stability. sure a four foot is easier to maintain than a 3 gallon desktop nano in a telecom office. oh wait no its not. i have had both and my desk top nano is by far the easiest care tank ive ever had (fresh water included) your planned 3 six feet tank will cost XX amount of dollars more to heat/light etc. more pumps needed and your stability is not going to be helped by the same percentage of effort money spent. good frequent 10 percent water changes will help far more
  23. i would say the person with the small sump, they both failed due to the lack of skilled husbandry and the person with the smaller sump spent less money
