  1. :dno: (winky face makes me think ive missed a joke) I think it is a phoretic species - there were a bunch of flies hanging around at the time, and noticed later that fly had a bigger one hanging off its leg
  2. I found a pseudoscorpion yesterday! heard of them, but never seen one before (Phone pics through a viewer)
  3. Normally when people ask questions like this someone will say: All the bacteria is in the filter and substrate, so there is no need to transport much, if any water, and it will just mean you will have to acclimatise the fish slowly as if you are moving them to a completely new tank. I have never moved a big tank before though, so just second hand info
  4. I have boiled wood a couple of times, and it seems to make it become waterloged faster (in my experience) my theory on how this works is the air in the wood expands as it warms, forcing some of it out (as evidenced by streams of tiny bubble coming out the ends as the water/wood starts to heat up) and then the air that is left contracting as it cools, sucking water into the spaces. I also found that after I had boiled it prety much put a stop to it leeching tannins - which seems in direct contrast to Dr A's experiences :dunno:
  5. heh heh, just looked up changeable lizard - apparently they like biting
  6. Grey Faced Petrel translocation - the easiest way to get them out of their burrows is to let them bite you and then grab their beak. Then look forward to them biting you every time you feed them till they fledge from the new site Also got bitten by a penguin in one of the burrows on that trip and had a tuatara run up my arm/neck and gave me a hell of a fright - luckily it didnt bite me, cause apparently they just hang on for like half an hour I'm sure there must be others, but cant think of any right now
  7. good on the farmer! http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/agribusiness/9869020/Rare-native-fish-found-on-farm
  8. I know Wellington and Auckland Zoo have them... this:http://www.reptiles.org.nz/uploads/PDF/List%20of%20animals%20and%20category%20of%20permit%20required%20to%20hold%20in%20captivity%20in%20New%20Zealand.pdf would imply you can have them without a permit in nz
  9. I have shrimp in with my Betta, and he ignores them for the most part. If you got medium sized ones I would think he would struggle to fit them in his mouth? My betta is pretty chill though That tank is at 24-5 degrees. Have had the shrimp in it for about 6 months, no problems so far. One important factor is to have lots of surface agitation as I think they are quite sensitive to low oxygen - higher water temp = less oxygen
  10. Moss is starting to grow in nicely! Had that in this tank originaly, thought it would go nice with the red in the fighters fins. Wanted him to contrast a bit more, so went for all green in this scape
  11. My Bro made himself one that can take a gopro http://vimeo.com/66950423 has like a 3km range or something crazy
  12. Yea, some rocks or sunken logs for cover would create suitable habitat for them, but would probably do ok without - they like moving things around so would probably dig themselves little hidey holes regardless. Your best bet for getting some would be to grab a net, jump in a stream and start looking under rocks!
  13. If there is a chance that it will overflow into a natural waterway (lake or stream/river) then you won't be able to introduce any fish to it without a permit In terms of native fish, there are Eels as mentioned. Other options could be Koura, Banded Kokopu, Inanga, or bullies. Inanga would be the only ones you would be likely to see during the day, but they wont be able to breed, so you would need to re-stock every couple of years. Banded Kokopu could potentialy breed, and some species of bullies (Crans, maybe Commons). Koura would definately breed, and in a pond that size you could potentially get enough for a feed once or twice a year! (might need some big rocks in the bottom for cover) All these guys would take out your tadpoles though (Koura might be ok), so if you wanted to keep the frogs hanging around, something like White Cloud Mountain Minnows would be able to co-exist happily with them
  14. Thanks guys! I was originally planning to have some moss on the driftwood, but once it was together thought it might make it a bit too top heavy/balanced so just have the one bit hiding a zip-tie by the cords Hopefully I scored a smaller variety of sword, but not averse to pruning out the leaves when they get too big. Hopefully it keeps putting out new small ones though!
  15. Hi All, got bored with how this tank was looking so decided to try my hand at a bit of an aquascape! Forgot to take photos of the early stages, so here is the finished product! This tank is kind of tricky to scape in, as the shape of the top makes it hard to get into! Also challenging is the fact it can be viewed from nearly 180 degrees in its current location, and the final view of its contents gets distorted when it is full of water, as you can see below Only have three species of plants - Twisted Val in the back and Xmas Moss in the gravel (Thanks Livebearer _breeder!) which I will hopefully be able to get to carpet a bit. Not sure what the plants in the middle are - just something random I liked the look of at animates. Its a bit hard to see in this photo, but the filter is pretty much all under the gravel, apart from the sponge intake which is kept clear by a barrier I made from black plastic The heater is tucked down there as well and then you can see the glass tube I have used as the outlet to give me some surface agitation. Basically tried to get all the necessary parts in there while keeping it all as clean and unobtrusive as possible and the star of the show! hanging with his shrimpy mates anyway, let me know what you guys think!

    Java Moss

I would say Blueether is thinking of going cold rather than hot?
  17. Two fish are in a tank... One turns to the other and says "do you know how to drive this thing? :fshi:
  18. Thanks Guys! Yea, I thought Xmas Moss might be good, trying to get ahold of some if you still have any? I like the look of 'echinodorus tenellus tenellus', but I had the same issue with my hairgrass - it started to slow down and almost die back once the other plants got up and shaded it a bit
  19. I have had some success with Glosso and Dwarf Hairgrass in my tanks, but they supposedly need a hightech setup to do well I was wondering if there are any alternatives that might be more suited to a lowtech setup? I assume just mosses?
  20. sleeping red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) (not my pic, but thought it was awesome!)
  21. the thing on the left looks like it has a spiral in the center? If so it might be a bubble maze type thing to keep the bubbles of CO2 in the water for longer? The nutrafin system you mentioned looks like it comes with a different one though
  22. One of the things I got up to this summer! http://wellingtonzoo.tumblr.com/post/75630729158/freshwater-surveying-at-bream-head
  23. Would be awesome if you could manage to raise a diadromous species in captivity. I am planning on having a go with my redfins if they spawn again this year. Am I right in thinking you can get a permit to sell natives? (just wondering how Koura farms would work otherwise. That, and the pet centres around Wellington have been selling shrimp for over a year, so must have a permit/supplier) A species like redfins could potentially have a place in the market if you managed to breed them...
  24. I have used hot glue before, depends on the type of rocks though - it wont hold smooth ones very well
