  2. hi ilah are you the guy i got about 8 adult bristlenoses from??
  3. i hardly got any replys from that site either even tough they have 1000's of people. i find the library and profiles good though. and reading about other peoples projects try http://www.malawimayhem.com/phpBB2/index.php it is a canadian site totally devoted to malawis. they are a bit more friendly but not as much as here.
  4. any fish can crossbreed, depends if they want to though. but if they aren't the orange/blue variation dont sell hybrid fry.
  5. um they could be the blue/orange variation, the male is blue and the female is red/orange i think this is the right order. go to www.cichlid-forum.com and look in the species profiles under metriaclima estherae. hope this helps
  6. melanotaenia Species i heard are good, haven't tryed them myself but........
  7. anywhere from $50 up. the dominant male will let out hormones which will stunt other fishes growth otherwise the biggest fish is normally the male anywhay
  8. your calcite look pretty similar to arangonite to me. aragonite keeps pH at around 8.2 and kH anywhere over 10 which is good because africans like hard water. mystic, do you have an 8 foot tank?? i have aragonite in most of my filters, the water goes through it after the carbon and that helps the pH stay high. i have nothing apart form that in my filters for my 800litre tank and it seems to stay about right so i'm happy. i might have to put some in the new sump i am making.
  9. what is calcite?? i use aragonite in some of my tanks, keeps the pH and kH high. Sea shells and limestone i think are both good for this as well. there is lots of limestone near here, a bit like oamaru stone.
  10. man i love those fish, shame i dont have a spare 6-7footer. They can go with malawis but the malawis will probabll pick on them. The require similar conditions for water quality with the frontosas pH being anywhere from 8-9??
  11. to me it looks like 1. Metriaclima Greshakei Female 2. Metriaclima Greshakei Male 3. Could be greshakei but a funny angle to tell. 4. Is it a Aulonocara baenschi female?? and a little Cyrtocara Moorii Juvenile, about the same size as mine. I haven't been able to find and greshakei females in nz here is a pic of my male.
  12. i have 3 fluval 404s, and eheim 2213 and 2215 and a resun ae-808 and all of them work fine, i prefer the eheim, easier to clean out

what do you use for seperating the different medias?? it would need to be something that doesn't bend much and has big holes like 10mm
  14. my albino pair are the same shape as my estherae, mystics one almost has the head shape of a metriaclima crabro.

    Sump

I have a 7 foot 800litre African cichlids tank. At the moment i have for filtration one eheim 2215 - meant to do 400litre tank, also has a pondmaster UV steriliser on the output. I also have two fluval 404's meant for a 400litre tank also. At the moment there are about 15 fish in there, maybe a few more but i am soon getting about 60 more (all adults) So i was wondering with the increased bioload will i need more filtration(sump) I know you are meant to drill the tank for an overflow but there isn't really any chance of that because the tank is already up and running and i aren't going to empty it in any hurry. Is there some way to do a sump system without drilling for the overflow?? I have room for maybe a 3 foot tank under there. Can anyone explain to me how a sump works and how you get the overflow running the same as the flow of the return pump?? thanx for any help

    Rock query???

limestone is good for africans because it raises the pH and kH which they like, shist is good because it is flat and you can make heaps of caves with little space.
  20. i had juveniles (ones bred by me) breeding at 4cm female 5cm male, got fry as well, not many usually only 10-15
  21. anyone know if i could wire 12 of these - http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/auct ... d=43034095 onto a 6v AC 450mA adaptor?? what size resistors would i need?? thanx Daniel
  22. but...........aragonite alters the pH and kH
  23. yes you could change it for any media, basically they are a diy version of some shops bought filters i have so they should be the same if not better, they are only going on 11 litre tanks but i have similar things on some 40litre tanks. maybe someone else knows more about what size tank.
  24. sorry about the sideways pics
