    hello to all

Hiya Tim. Good to see you here finally See you tonight. Bring along the newspaper clipping of you at the show if you have it yet. Bilbo
  2. Mum or is it dad is a beautiful looking fish. I agree with Caryl baby Discus look really cute feeding and swimming with parents. Congrats
  3. I got some from Hutt PC last week. Opposite the food section, back right. They had heaps there
  4. Wetpets in Palmy said they haven’t heard of any problem. Unsure if it was just a green sales attendant or not but they said they had a truckload and had a large supply arrive last week. Be interested too in an update though.
  5. Congratulations to the organizers and judges. Was my first show and I enjoyed it very much. Shame I only had 15 minutes spare and couldn’t have spent more time and see the seahorse farm or put some faces to some of the names. By all accounts a great success.
  6. My wife and I had about 10 of these hatch last night and by this morning there are about 50. They are her favorite fish because of colours. She did all the reading and set the tank up herself and was really excited when she saw the little ones swimming around last night. The lay a few eggs a day over a week or so and the fry hatch at about the same rate about a week later. There is tons of info on them around. We used 1 male and 3 females in a 10 ltr tank with tons of java moss and marbles over a dark base.

    Help with HITH

I have a Blue Ram that looks like its head is caving in. All scales have gone from round the front of its head and its flesh has about 4 round pits about 2mm round and 1 mm deep from just above the eyes to the nose area. I thought he has just been bashed up by the dominant male but after isolation for 2 weeks its getting worse and is now not eating. I have dosed the Q'tine tank with Meth Blue and Fungi cure but no change. Is this likely to be the dreaded Hole in the head? and if so how do I cure it? Thanks Bilbo

    Water Changing.

So thats a yes or a no. Or maybe a try and see what happens? I have been using Dehumid water for ages but never stopped to think what the elements were made of.

    Water Changing.

Well it was a good idea. Actually maybe it wasnt. Thanks guys. Could have made a total balls up on that one, pleased I asked now I got the idea from http://www.floridadriftwood.com/water_changer.htm .Maybe they have modified the unit by painting or plastic dipping?? or maybe they dont care about the alloy.
  10. Would like some thoughts on a water change system I started to make. Its kind of a reverse sump idea for fresh water. In the attic I have a Dehumidifier that produces around 10 Ltrs of water per day. I want to feed that water into an 18" tank with filtration equipment, peat and a heater. It will have an overflow from that to the 150Ltr tank and of course an overflow from that tank to waste. Its approximately 8% water change daily. From that what have I forgotten? Why will it/wont it work? Tank has Discus, Ram's, some Tetras and a few other fish that like soft water and will shortly be having a DIY CO2 unit fitted for plants.
  11. Welcome Natalie. That sound great the red turqs are really beautiful too. Good luck with breeding them.
  12. Sorry I cant help with the females but if you do get some and get either of those breeding let me know. I would like to get hold of some of them.
  13. I run 2 combo heater units in my rearing tank. One hardly ever turns on and is only a backup. They are on 2 power outlets on different fuses too. But it is almost imposable to set 2 x heaters to switch on simultaneously and if you have a low flow/water rotation rate you are always going to get slight temperature variations. Pie's is right, a good thermostat with 2 or more heaters is probably a better idea however I have not yet got a high quality thermostat.

    Hi everyone!

Welcome. Loads of good advice in here. I am sure you will help with whatever you are after.
  15. Thanks Mouse I will give it a go. Its friday and yes they have spawned (Are laying right now)again. This time on the side of the internal filter though. I thought I would have a 2 week window? I havent even done a water change this week.
  16. Hi and Welcome Helen. I am also looking to breed them soon. Very best of luck as they are one of the most beautiful fresh water fish you can buy. This site might help. http://www.angelfire.com/tx/CichlidPimp/
  17. I know this is an old post but for those who are interested. 'The Good Shed' in NaeNae, Wellington is a supplier for Southland Sand and Gravel. They can get all the colours and sizes if they havent got them in stock. Price is roughly $25 per 25Kg bag I think.

    spawning mops

Why would you use fishing nylon? And how would you tease the ends? Wool is like $4 or less. Be a devil I say and splash (sorry for the pun) out on a ball.
  19. Ok!! Figured as much. Can set you clock to it. Friday night is like "Wahoo" for them and then with Monday looming and back to work they have a big Dinner of Eggs on Tericota.
  20. More eggs on Friday. Sunday now and look very good. Last time was friday evening too and they ate them Sunday night so heres hoping not this time. Also this time I got to watch them, they are fasinating. Discus are very English. All prim and propper
  21. I have used egg yoke on Alan's advice and it worked very well. Fry loved it and looked fat and healthy. I used cooled boiled water and squeezed it through a hanky. Dont think I had a single loss during that stage.

    And Again

Pretty sure too that Platties can have 2 or 3 batches of fry from a single 'pairing' so he may not even be needed for a while. Wont stop him trying though.
  23. I am not planning to chop there heads down the middle thanks anyway Inter. Doubt I could as they are thinner than any cutting equipment I could get. Glad they are harmless though so thanks.
  24. http://www.angelfire.com/tx/CichlidPimp/ this one is not to bad. Good Luck Ballistic
