  1. not that much better, no filtration, hevily over stocked and at the wrong temp for at least one of the species. IMO the worst thing is that someone thinks they are doing it "right"
  2. you will have problems putting a large angel in a small tank, especially if it is uncycled. I would try and put some sort of divider between them, a piece of glass or perspex, a sheet of thick plastic, even a sheet of netting... TM should find you a result quickly, big angels are popular, just don't mention about sexes or try your LFS, they may be interested in doing a trade with you. what area are you in?
  3. this is a nice little response http://www.fishchannel.com/media/freshwater-aquariums/fish-breeding/angel-sexing.aspx.pdf
  4. sexing angels is difficultuntil you see the spawning tubes males are thin and pointed and females are thick and rounded on the ends. if you cant be bothered waiting till spawning time you can always make them pop out by seriously overfeeding them (don't do this too often as it can cause other issues, and clean up afterwards to avoid ammonia spike) but to my eye they both look like males (looking at the front of the belly and the angle between ventral fins and anal fin, also males are more likely to grow the humpy head) btw... 240L is bare minimum size for what you have atm, especially if the loaches and gourami are a larger species
  5. I really dont think java fern will survive out side for too long, go for a wander down your local creek to see what natural options you have. trutles will quickly take a few chunks out of the axo's so its a case of either or, the orandas should survive the axo's untill the axo's can take them in one bite (expect a few missing fins though) if you can get a peice of wood from thebottom of a river you should not have too much trouble with tannins leaching (although after this week there will be a lot of fresh wood in there)
  6. nah, all we need is some cane toads, give it 3 years and we won't have any native wildlife left and we will be allowed to import anything we want!!! plus they make good golf balls
  7. offer chocolate cake and you should get heaps of help to move them
  8. yeah you are, I can see it a mile off
  9. and in a lot nicer manner than a live oyster being swallowed would If the artist was protesting cruelty, wonder if he realised that having the fish in there for a short time even was cruel???
  10. yeah I know, its a late 70's house, 2 in the lounge, 1 in each bedroom (2) 2 in the kitchen (3 if you count the stove) and 1 in the garage. got 4 4ways running atm need another couple, might stop in at bunnings, should ask the landlord if I can fix a couple to the walls permanently
  11. yeah I know, trouble is our entire house only has 8 sockets, so i need one on every socket
  12. one of my pet peeves is when people use fish for ornaments for a single occasion, normally the fish are considered disposable and get mistreated and then discarded. then you realize this attitude is so common that people consider it good advertising for their business to show these.
  13. mine are happy in 8-10 degrees unheated, but they are a lot more active and fertile if kept a bit warmer, unfortunately I only have 1 power point atm and that is for the airpump Update:-5 babies so far, 3 feeding on ground flake food, 2 only showed up this morn so watching closely. was not ready for them so have a bottle in the window trying my best to get some infusoria etc... as quick as possible. will go raid some plants later today, hopefully there will be some extra microfauna on them too. not bad, $5 for 4 fish, have 9 now 2 days later :happy1:
  14. hrmmm, Ira have you worked in the industry before??? your cynicism sounds rather familiar
  15. if its the furcatus Phoenix showed, then your description is rather accurate as one of their common names is yellow finned blue eye if not, where did you see them?
  16. there were a few around ages ago (8-10yrs), they are a hard genetic to keep pure though and most6 revert to regulars quite quickly. you could always try breeding some
  17. gidday and good luck with you addiction. gotta love those shellies, there are quite a few around atm so sourcing a few more shouldn't take you too long.
  18. angels would get too large, but a pair of kribs should do fine as long as they aren't fighting over the same cave
  19. can't wait to see it when its grown out and theres lotsa blue ram fry swimming round
  20. Very nice, you might want to add some form of hard bottomed cave to prevent the rams from diggin too much
  21. and the first baby has arrived
  22. its also found in NZ down to about 20m,
  23. the one at 0:53???? my guess would be Plagiotemus tapeinosoma Piano Fangblenny, or a close relative anyways
