  1. There was a recent long thread on lighting ... check it out
  2. Are flukes visible to the naked eye? How about grabbing the Black Moor, and scraping one of these things off, and look at it under a magnifying glass? Or, if you suspect it came with the mussel, it might be easier to grab that and inspect it.
  3. More insulation with 2 x 5 mm glass and an air gap!
  4. Possibly which is why I don't buy fish at present because I can't quarantine them. One ends up in this situation where you don't know whether the new fish caught something from the existing inhabitants who had developed some resistance, or, whether the stress of moving had lowered the resistance to something which the new fish already had but under control.
  5. Shouldn't one quarantine new fish for a few weeks first before introducing them to your existing tanks?
  6. Just wondering what the pH of your tap water and tank water are ...
  7. Plants remove ammonium first before nitrates I believe.
  8. White tubes are probably ceramic noodles. The fact that the fish died means that it had a weakened immune system, and that points to water quality at some stage in its life. A larger volume of water means that dangerous things happen less quickly, perhaps giving you time to fix things. A small heater might also help to smooth out temperature fluctuations. I keep my gold fish tank at about 18 deg with a heater. I probably overdo it, but I am running 5 filters in my 180L gold fish tank I have a Aquaclear 50 hang on back filter (rarely clean it ), a submersible Juwel powerhead with sponge filter inside (rarely clean) that provides a little water movement, a corner filter with some wool to clean the water, and an air driven sponge filter with some K1 Media above that, and also a plant refugium to try and remove nitrates. On top of that I do 30% water changes once a week. I've seen fins get ripped from accidents but never had any fungus attack the fish.
  9. Hi Lulu Fish don't normally come down with saprolegnia or columnaris if the water is pristine. If you had two adult fantails in a 54L tank, you would have been overstocked. Or, you might not have been performing enough partial water changes. Some people would say that 54L is not enough water volume for even one fancy gold fish.
  10. http://deepblueaquarium.co.nz//product_ ... vc8cn1vjn3 A lot cheaper than that trademe listing. I went thru a lot of drops for ammonia testing and decided it was cheaper to just get the alert which tells you toxic ammonia. If I need to test elsewhere I move it to a different tank.
  11. Marine Education Centre in Island Bay. Dunno about LFS though.
  12. We're just trying to reprogram your cortex So white with a red peak in a tropical bulb?
  13. Do you mean an IBC or Intermediate bulk container? They're quite popular for aquaponic setups.
  14. I couldn't read those articles as they link to a subscription magazine. Not sure what Tom Barr is saying ... but don't you want the plants to look their best? As I mentioned above, the OP has not qualified by what they mean by "best".
  15. So, exactly how was it making any noise when you removed the impeller? And yes, it's broken; it should be a single piece and not 3 pieces. Weren't you going to return it?
  16. We do know the absorption characteristics of cholorophyll a & b in laboratory conditions for terrestrial plants but what the above data is not showing is what happens in the tank. And we do know that aquatic plants do have adaptations to absorb green light, and there are parts of the plant that utilize light in different spectra. Practically speaking though I would just follow the recommendations of those who are acknowledged experts in creating great planted tanks. Here's an article by Amano for the OP http://www.tfhmagazine.com/details/arti ... uarium.htm
  17. Which book? Aquarium Plant Paradise - he uses sodium tubes ( yellow ) Nature Aquarium World Books 2 & 3, he just quotes wattage and photoperiods.
  18. Sunlight. But if you want the most natural growth, yellow green. And if you want maximal growth no matter what it looks like, blue red
  19. Yes, blue and reds will max out photosynthesis if the plants can get it. But as I mentioned above, reds are absorbed by water and blue by dissolved organic compounds. As I understand it Amano feels you'll get more natural growth patterns with green lighting which is why they sell green lighting. they also have blue lighting but I believe it's for marine tanks.
  20. Topic should be "guy demanding refund after killing HIS FH" ... not yours anymore as you sold it.
  21. Green Light Drives Leaf Photosynthesis More Efficiently than Red Light in Strong White Light: Revisiting the Enigmatic Question of Why Leaves are Green http://pcp.oxfordjournals.org/content/50/4/684.full Talks about the differential use of lighting spectra within a leaf
  22. No, not true. It is reflecting some green light but not all. Different parts of the leaf can use different parts of the light spectrum. See also this discussion http://www.barrreport.com/showthread.ph ... some-cases
  23. Yes, as mentioned above, what is best for photosynthesis is not necessarily what the plant ends up using as it has to compete with absorption by water and dissolved organic compounds. And you'll have both of the latter in a planted tank.
