    Dr Felix

Great post Dr Felix, glad I inspired you Sounds like you can be a lotta help around here. Ever thought of the triple unit tank with the waterfall in the centre... looks pretty neat, and I have a few requests to build a prototype or there's one with a water bridge running between two tanks... also pretty neat. Hope to read more of your exploits
  3. Don't know if I got it wrong, but I thought I heard the guy say that they sold between 500,000 and 800,000 fish per year, and they don't export as of yet... and that some species can bring tens of thousands of dollars Seems the coldwater hobby is in full swing he he. Wonder how many tropicals are sold annually..?
  4. Anyone fortunate enough to catch the Country Calander program this week..? Excellent topic on Goldfish.. very impressive.
  5. Noatar is 'already' married Ira.. Welcome to the forum Noatar, and I wish you the best of luck in your search for a new home. A visit to NZ is definitely the answer, and in general, if you 'have something to offer' NZ, then it goes a long way towards your acceptance. Many business people bring their contacts, skills, and finances to NZ so all is not lost. The 'Aquarium Trades' are monopolised by certain companies, and importation of fish is strictly limited, mainly by these people who decide what to bring in, and what not to bring in, but then of course there is MAF.. the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries... another great wall to climb. You'll find the restricted fish and plants list at the head of the page... just click the twin fish. Best of luck to you both.
  6. Cees said: Hi Cees, A bit concerned about the above. You have 'my' confirmation, so could those that have made the commitment please have some assurance that they 'WILL" get their order 'before' the 'first come first served' takes the lot. Bill said : Can you give any indication when they will arrive ..? My supply is finished and I am pretty desperate at the moment.
  7. Welcome Shelia... Great fish you have there, and hope you find some interest on the site. Got any pics of your tank ?
  8. Never asked mine .. but they were around 1.1/2" to 2" (38 to 50mm) Conditioning the fish "before" attempting to spawn will give the best results.
  9. Still keen Cees, Where do I send the money..??
  10. Can you get the gravel from them before it is crushed? What colours does it come in or is it only grey? I suppose so.. but uncrushed woulsd obviously be bigger I only looked for dark grey, but I think they do shingle and pebbles as well. It's Altlas Quarries in Northland.
  11. Hi Sayhi2steve Not had any probs with sharp edges, and I have heaps of cats grubbing about inthe gravel with no ill effects.. (they wear their barbles down if its sharp) The stuff I'm using is called #6, and it also hasn't effected my pH either.
  12. Hi Sayhi2steve, Any local gravel yard or quarry that supplies materials for the roads should have what you are looking for. That's where I get all my gravel from, and I use 3mm to 4mm, but they have it much finer... Costs around 34 bucks a tonne ... if you need that much, but they will sell you a sack or a trailer load... no probs
  13. Sounds a bit like a bacteria bloom Ira... Have you checked for dead fish lurking under ornaments or rocks...? How often are you feeding...? Try a box filter with some activated carbon in... it usually helps.
  14. Hey there Mark, You've been hiding too long... Welcome to the fishroom. What sort of fish do you have..?

The 14yr old Mick Fish is up to his tricks already.. Just ignore him ..... Feedback is the worst thing you can give him. :(
  17. Brilliant Andrew... Looking at our five you could be right. If the growth looks to be a fungus of sorts (hard to tell).. a Salt Bath wouldn't go amiss.
  18. Have they spawned yet Ira..?
  19. Hi Ira, Having only one male will just give you less fertilized eggs, but you should still get some out of it. Nip to the local curtain shop and grab an offcut of nylon net curtain with 2 or 3mm holes... it'll cost you a couple o bucks. Get the plain mest type without a pattern... it's quite common so you'll have no probs. Rinse it well before use. Drape it in the tank and secure it with clothes pegs so that it is 2 or three inch off the bottom (75mm).... nothing flash... just drape it in there. Set them up to spawn when ready and the eggs will drop though to the tank botton. (bare tank) Just keep the base clean and the fry should hatch in a couple of days or so. Same applies for Barbs.. Danios.. and many of the egg scatterers. Related pairs "will" spawn, but introduce fresh stock later to avoid runts etc. HTH
  20. Hi Ira, You would get a better result with three males to one female. Keep seperate till she's good and fat, then put them together. Not keen on the pebbles or marbles idea, as too much hassle to remove the eggs or keep clean.

DIY starts as a glimmer of inspiration that comes to you when you see something that could obviously be made cheaper, or improved in some way. At times you use an existing concept... but look at it from a diiferent angle, and in a different light, so invariably you raid the junk pile or the house for that "certain" thing that "may" just do the job, or becomes the "base" for the project to get started. Again, at this point you are reluctant to "splash out" and spend funds on something that is just a dream at the initial stages, but as it comes together and might be showing results you may then decide to "improve" it slightly with a few bits from the local hardware shop. A scribble here and there, and a bit of thought, and before you know it you have a prototype... that may or may not need more work... but the personal achievement that you gained through all this is the only reward you need, for to see something working successfully that you have created is a great feeling... and really there is little need for complicated mathmatical formula's to produce the end product. Knowing that... ... is great I suppose... if you feel that way inclined, but is not a consistant factor if you consider that this will "only" work on the new installation, and as time passes flows will reduce through internal restriction, or blockage from plants etc.. so the formula is probably feasanle on paper, but may have its faults in practice. Education or not... DIY can be had by us all... Think it... Dream it... Do it Happy Days, Bill (Pegasus)
  22. Hi Kimmy, welcome to the NZ fishroom. A lot depends on how far the move is, and if you can pre-prepare somewhere for your fish at the new place prior to moving in. Ideally if you had a friend nearbye to hold your fish over till you got set up again... this would be ideal, but otherwise you may have a few probs. What you basically do is bag the fish up with 30%air, and the rest water. Use good strong bags, and double bag, then inflate the inner bag with your air pump and twist both necks tight and fold over, then secure with a strong rubber band... check for leaks "before" you box them up. If the move is a long one, pack them in styrene boxes... (Chilly bin is good) they will be ok for over a day if packed right and not overcrowded in the bags. Pack any spaces with screwed up newspaper. You can leave the gravel in the tank... but remove rocks etc. Save as much water as you can from the tank, and you will need to keep your filters (outside/inside/canister active, so if you are looking at a lengthy trip, it might pay to buy or borrow a battery air pump so that you can keep water flowing over them in a container of some sort with tank water in. On arrival... fist job is get your tank level and set up, then put what water you saved in the tank and get the heater and filters running. The tank doesn't need to be full at this time, but deep enough to keep the fish alive. You can top up in stages once you get things organised. The gravel will have taken a fair bit of sloshing around, and the active bacteria could be stirred up a bit and some could die, so you may have a cloudy tank for a while till you can start some regular water changes. Don't panic in putting the fish in... they will be quite content if you leave them in the boxes undisturbed.. but if you open the boxes you could stress them, so leave them till your temp and things have stablized. Get these things right first and your filters running, and then if things look good you can semi darken the room and add your fish. Leave the lights of the tank off, as plunging fish that have been in darkness a long time may not take kindly to the bright lights, so avoid stressing them. Goodd luck with the move Kimmy... It's a job none of us like Happy Days, Bill (Pegasus)
  23. Great stuff Goldie... Keep those shrimps comin... he he. They grow real fast... faster than most fish if they are fed right. Nice to watch their fins taking shape and the colours showing... Happy Days, Bill (Pegasus NZ)
