  3. Have a friend that needs to identify some Marine Fish. Any ideas of the names of these, (common and Latin would help) http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/grumpy ... arines.htm Many thanks.

    Website Update

Stunning fish, great pics and well worth the visit despite the slightly slow loading of the pics. Great stuff.
  8. Hi Cat, This is the method that I use for small batches. 1/ Fill a two litre container with tank water (warm) and suspend in the tank. (76 to 80deg works best... cooler will take longer to hatch. 2/ Add three tablespoons of sea salt. 3/ Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. 4/ Aerate well for a few minutes to mix contents. 5/ Add 1/2 level spoonful of cysts. 6/ Aerate well for 12 to 18hrs and shrimp will hatch. In my tests light seems to make no difference whatsoever, but this is just my opinion, but I have never had a bad hatch, even from old eggs.

Just saw the segment. Good on ya BBY :) Choice looking tanks there, and real nice looking fish.
  10. They need making smaller Chris as they are sending the whole thread out of whack . Mod. P.

    cold tank

If you look in the tank and the fish are doing the Lambada, then you know there's an electrical short somewhere :)

    cold tank

Geez Goldie, why 'ever' would you want to turn the power off..? Just as well the weather was pretty warm so they hopefully will be ok
  13. Should we believe 'all' we hear. Recently on one of the forums there was referrence to "Angel Aids" would you believe. Apparently highly infectious and is killing thousands of fish in the States. Yet others from the same states say that they have never heard of such a thing and it is all a myth, but it certainly is causing panic in some places whether it is true or not.
  14. Mmmm... Edited your last post Chris and added the URL, but it still didn't work so I removed it again. Many sites won't allow you to upload off their site, so this could be the prob. If you need somewhere to store them for viewing then send me an email and you can use my site... Got heaps o room.
  15. Hi again, What a wonderful gesture Goldie, you have a heart of gold and you picked the right name. Hi Fishnut, This is the thing with fish keeping. Things can happen so quickly that if you blink you miss them, and only when your tank is truly established can you relax a little. It's like a scale on a fine balance, and the slightest thing can change that balance, sometimes to the good, and sometimes to the bad. When something of this nature happens you have to sit back and go over EVERYTHING that you did over the previous week or sometimes month, and usually the thing that caused the prob will come to light. Even the water from your tap can change from day to day, as many here will testify, so find out the situation of your tap water and monitor it occasionally to make sure you are not adding more probs to your tank. It's highly unlikely that it 'is' the filter, but more as above... a sudden climb in toxicity, either ammonia or nitrites, or both, and you mention cleaning the gravel. Now if you disturbed this unduly (especially if you have overfed a few times) then you could have created a bacteria explosion that might be part of your prob. You'll have the answers tomorrow with Goldie's kits.
  16. Hi Fishnut, welcome to the fishroom. Sounds like you have a definite water problem, most likely ammonia buildup. Seeing you have no means of testing the water you could whip a sample down to your LFS and let them test it for you. In the meantime you need to move some water. Do a 25% water change today, and another in two days (Thursday) and every couple of days till you see some result. They could pick up after a couple of water changes, but it's hard to say. Hopefully you DIDN'T clean the old filter too thoroughly, as this will kill the bacteria, and you should only do it in a bucket of tank water, not under the hot or cold tap. Overfeeding might be another cause, so you may have to cut the feeds down. Hope they come right
  17. Last time I dived out at "W" bay on Wheiheke (sp) we found a tunnel running between two small bays. It was filled with sponges, crays, anenomies and octupii. I was peering into hole and one of the octupii wrapped itself around my head and pulled the mask off my face along with my reg and I dropped my torch. Pretty scarey stuff in a dark cave/tunnel, but in the rockpools over there at low tide there's heaps of baby crays and optopus, especially under the overhanging rock outcrops that never dry out. Another great place is Takatu Point on the East coast if you are mobile and don't mind the walk after parking. Saw some of the biggest crays in my life there, plus tons of babies, and you can get to a lot of it just on snorkle, but watch for hammerheads.
  18. Already done. Sorry, I was late getting online today. We all regret your loss Ira, but this is a family forum and not a place for angry outbursts.

    Hi to all

 Sorry Caryl, was just having a bit of fun  Some of the clubs and societies were here long before the net and the forums, and are still one of the best ways to 'really' get involved with the hobby, and for anyone that is in driving distance of one they would not go far wrong by joining, or like some have done if a club was unavailable have started a new one, or revived an old one. Keep up the good work Caryl, you're doing an amazing job

    Hi to all

Hi Tracey, Saw you hiding there for a while before you jumped in Hope all this club talk hasn't scared you, but it's sort of a ritual in the welcome pages (before you even get in the door) he he. Tons of great posts here, and lots to read, so a warm welcome to you Tracey, and we hope you enjoy your visits. What type of Cichlids do you keep, and have you spawned them yet..? Any pics of your fish at all..?
  23. Nothing wrong with Tubifex worms if they are cleaned thoroughly under a dripping tap for two or three days. This flushes them out of any rubbish and leaves them suitable for the fish. They were one of our main live foods in the early days, and 'every' LFS supplied them as a normal live food for fish. but possibly through some bad press they have now become unavailable.... unless you collect your own, so now they freeze dry them and charge five times the price for a pack of cubes that look like wood shavings.
  24. So "that's" what a Quahog is.... I'm still confused he he.. never mind, nothing unusual for me at 4:15am in the morning Rooster "or" chicken, they're pretty famous worldwide. The members register is at the top of the page... just click to see the list.
