  1. your convict looks nice and healthy, but not even close to being top quality. don't feel bad though. so many convicts are inbred/bad genetics nowadays that it's hard to find quality specimens. that oscar looks a bit sad. something has been nipping at his fins. also, healthy oscars do not have black around the edges of their fins, this happens when oscars are not in fine health. all this probably happened in the shop you got him from. oscars are very tough, resilient fish though, keep him in a tank by himself for now, if he is gonna recover he will recover quick. if he's gonna die he will die quick too. but i think he will be ok, don't pay any attention to these negative nancys. get some ox heart in him if you can, and keep up with water changes.
  2. your existing set up sounds fine. bio media first, then wool then sponge. i dont like putting filter wool in the top/last basket as strands of wool can break off and wrap around the impeller. i like having a sponge in the last basket. i would not recommend putting ceramics in the last basket either coz bits can break off. if you can fit any more bio media in there amongst the wool or sponges then go for it, just don't clog it up too much so that it restricts flow. i like having two external filters on one tank, one of them full of bio media, and the other full of mechanical filtration. i'm rambling. but, if your tank is not huge and/or very heavily stocked, then your filter sounds fine the way it is.
  3. come on then wacko jacko, show us some photos!!!
  4. just got home from the TOOL concert. still buzzing. what an amazing show. as usual!
  5. haha yeah pretty sure it was fi5hguy that told me that when i was in tauranga. is that who told you?
  6. looks kinda like a hoplo but cooler markings. like an L001 goldspot pleco markings. henward might know?
  7. yeah they are one of the few fish that can handle living with an oscar haha. didn't see you were in wellington. i was sorta joking anyway bro. it won't be too hard to find a nice male when i decide to breed her. she is currently in a tank with two small texas cichlids, she has fun chasing them around, but i think there is a chance they she will try breed with the texas. would be interesting to see.
  8. pics of what? we are discussing concepts. here is my tall tank that i want to fill up higher
  9. someone told me that if they leave little white packets around the enclosure they are sperm packets and it's therefore a male...
  10. he looks beefy! such a good first cichlid. wanna pimp him out? lol
  11. you could make some cool caves and stuff out of cement or some kind of putty but it would be too heavy. i have thought about making a mezzanine type floor halfway up my tall tank. could then put rocks or wood on top of the extra floor space. would wanna make it out of plastic or something light but sinky.
  12. :iag: :gopo: early deaths and low spawn survival rate happens with the majority of fish whose genetics have been fiddled with by man. seems we aren't as good at playing god as we think we are...
  13. this all sounds too familiar. can't find my old thread, but yeah. mystery disease is mysterious.
  14. damn it's hard to take good pics of fish. especially when you have a shoddy camera. oh well. new pics of my lady convict. ready to breed soon, been looking around for a top quality male. these pics don't do her justice at all.
  15. something about this tank really impressed me.
  16. cool. you should enter this pic in POTM
  17. farmville can waste weeks.. months... years of your life. i should know. level 7 with just over 300,000 xp when i managed to break free....
  18. sup guys. rainy day thread. what sites do you use to waste time on the internet? aside from fnzas which is relatively boring these days. i often use stumble upon, which is great.
  19. i've been wondering this as well. i have a 80cm tall tank that is completely empty above about 30cm. stacking rocks isn't ideal as there are big fish who could knock them over.
