  1. I have my cockatoos breeding in my community tank. They're fine - the other fish learn pretty quickly to get the hell out of the females way when she's guarding her fry and you can always tell where the female is as it's the other end of the tank from all the other fish I think she sorted out my slight overcrowding issue by culling a few pandas in the beginning but now they've all learnt the rules there aren't any more battles.
  2. You've got me wanting to flag the geos and go fully planted once again. I've got 2 150W halides and a 4 foot 36W *2 T8 unit. Once the co2 setup is acquired I'd like to see what can be done. Have you found you've done better since going to your own concoction of fertilisers?
  3. Holy Crap! That is truly stunning! I've seen the shots separately before but putting a bunch into a single post like that has really highlighted the awesomeness of your tank. Reckon I can recreate that in a 700L tank? I seriously doubt it.
  4. DON'T GO VIA WAIHI - the gorge adds a lot of stress as well as time to the trip.
  5. Some cyclocross action you reckon? I certainly wouldn't expect it to live up to that sort of abuse. Good buy though, nice choice.
  6. I read that the tank was made by the seller but the replacement sheet came from Greg. I guess I got that wrong...?
  7. Yeah, just make sure there's a layer (as thin as possible) between the 2 bits of glass and run a thin bead around the edge of the flap and it'll be all good. Chances are it didn't cure or wasn't kept with pressure on it for the first few hours / days of curing so slowly let go.
  8. OK cool, I'll have a bit more of a think about it.
  9. Thanks! You had geos in your big tank - do you reckon they'd take to a semi planted tank with rocks and wood spread throughout? I was thinking a school of altifrons because I love the long fins.
  10. pics of the tank with the silicone drying. I built the tank on the stand so I didn't have to move it later. Masking everything before starting was well worth it although I screwed a lot of the measurements and some of the silicone has some extra large sides to it. The level/ruler is 1200mm long for reference.
  11. Hmmm, you've got me thinking again... I might go for a heavily planted section (1/4 - 1/3 max) of the tank with rocks around and through the plants before adding geos. I'll fill the rest of the tank with a light river sand of some sort to keep the geos and corys happy. I've got a source of some amazing nz native hard wood which I'm hoping to set up like root structures.
  12. Welcome back. It seems we're doing the same thing with the same size tank. I'm going panda corys, some apistos and something decorative with some plants thrown in for good measure. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
  13. Finally put it all together tonight. This tank is HUGE! Well, huge for me. It seems like a serious shame to put such tiny fish in it but then I'd much rather have 100s of little ones than 3 big ones. If only geos didn't destroy plants it'd be the perfect size. I'm seriously doubting my ability to grow plants in there though. I've got far too much light and nowhere near enough knowledge to keep the ferts balanced. I think I should have the co2 covered with a diy + diffuser setup. I'll get pics up tomorrow. Now I just have to wait a couple of weeks for the silicone to cure and then I can do some water tests.
  14. Wow Alan - that's an amazing lot of really good looking plants. Well done.
  15. Where can you buy cutting tools from over the counter? I can get them off trademe but need one tomorrow at the latest...
  16. Nice buy! I'm obstacle on kiwibiker but I don't really check in there very often. I bet you beat me to your full license too - I'm still riding a 250 on my restricted that took me 3 years to get. 3 x tickets for travelling over 70km/h on a learners license made me get my restricted. Can't see myself getting in enough trouble to get my full for a while
  17. Explain? Maybe in another thread? I'm keen to give it a go if you're cool to send them to AKL.
  18. Put me down for 4-8 once they're big enough to be shipped. If you're planning to save any from the cardinals
  19. Sorry - off topic - did you get your discus pair to breed? or get someone to breed them?
  20. Yeah, I was seriously shocked at the MDF prices. I even went to the pre-cut section to see if buying smaller sheets would save money but they worked out more expensive (as I expected). This ply was on special and the non-special priced 12mm ply was heaps more than the MDF though.
