  1. Sorry to hear bout your losses. :an!gry Ive just arrived home after 2 weeks and everything is ok at mine. With the exception of a slightly dry sump. What i had was a 7 day pill container from the $2 shop on each tank. They came round every 2nd day and fed the fishys, i also hid all the other food away so there was no chance of overfeeding. Oviously this isnt of much help now but thought i would just share.
  2. Hi all, we purchased 3 female bettas from hff last weekend and today i discovered a nice big bubble nest in their tank. Now im guessing that one is a male? or do females build bubble nests too? i can put up photos if that helps

    Altos :)

If your kicking out malawis, send any spare ones my way :sml1:
  4. Hey go to Expol! - 105 Captain Springs Road. Its way cheaper than any hardware store, as they manufacture it. Also if you ask they often have some nice big blocks from offcuts. This is where i went when i made my background.
  5. Personally i don't think this seller would need to bid against themselves (i take it that is what you are insinuating), due to their number of auctions and huge turn over. Some people just want to bid big just to scare off potential competition.
  6. I have one in my 6fter with africans, they love playing in the current. I forget what the flow rate is but think its higher than 6000l/h. I wouldn't recommend using it on a timer though, as im sure fish will find their way into it while its off. Then will be mince meat when it switches back on.
  7. I use a combination of NLS, spirulina flake and frozen foods. Ive got five african tanks on the go, if you buy the bigger jars of nls will work out great value for the quality you are getting. I also use the odd fruit and vege as a treat!
  8. Tornado was just after 3pm apparently.
  9. Getting home was crazy, all the lights are out and emergency vehicles everywhere. Apparently there was a tornado by the harbor bridge just after i went over it. Powers out in a lot of areas. Thankfully we still have it here.
  10. Welcome! Hope you enjoy your stay
  11. Nice fish and i love the drift wood :happy2: Where did David find that??
  12. Heres the background thats in my 800L: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=50525 I let the concrete cure for a week or so. Then added water and after 3 or 4 water changes over the next week the ph had stabilised. Fish have been healthy as for the 2 or so months they have been in there.
  13. Wow, nice tank cant wait to see photos when its all set up. :happy2: What media is going in the sump? Ive heard about people using adhesive to fix slightly uneven stands. They just put thick beads of "no more nails" (or similar) between the stand and ply. Then sit the poly and tank on top while the adhesive is still wet. The tank should do the job of leveling out the ply and the glue will hold it there. Hope this helps.

    800L Tang Tank

Just added 22 Dubs to the mix (thanks Coral). The shellies weren't too impressed but they will get over it.

    800L Tang Tank

Filtration is a sump i had made, i had no experience with sumps but it seems to be doing the trick so far. Using filter wool, bio balls (wet & dry) then coral bits & bio noodles then a whole lot of scourer pads. Ill start by adding my dubs first i think (20-25). then may add the second variety in a month or two. Cheers for all the replies, and offers of trophs. It will be so sweet to finally get this bad boy filled with livestock.

    800L Tang Tank

It was 700x700x1800 but my background takes up a bit of room, it might be 750L when taking that into account. So im safe to fill it up with at least 40 - 50 trophs then?

    800L Tang Tank

Sadly the selection of tangs in NZ is very limited. Hopefully this will change as they continue to grow in popularity and availability. There are so many sweet looking tangs out there readily available in Oz that never make it as far as us. On this note im after 20+ Duboisi (any size considered). Will post in trade section too.

    800L Tang Tank

Ok all, Im after some help stocking my 800L with more fish. Ive had 10 shellies in for the last month cycling so am ready to add the main bulk of the stocking. Ideally I want shellies, julies, altos(maybe) and lots of tropheus. I think i will be adding two types of tropheus, Duboisi and maybe bulu point or firefox. Depending on what i can get my hands on. My first question is, how many tropheus will be ok in there? I take it they are like malawis and need lots of same species to spread aggression. Will 20 fish of each type be ok? do i need more/less? I will be buying them as fry and growing them out / thinning out males. If anyone out there has any tropheus fry please let me know. Cheers, Josh
  21. I find that Golden Algae Eaters work well in my tank. They get quite big and will hold their own against the cichlids. Although if it is the green spot algae your friend has it will be hard to get a fish that will completely clean it all. Mine will eat some of it but i still have to use a credit card on the side near the window every now and then.
  22. There is a learning curve when keeping/breeding any new type of fish. Africans seem to be the most forgiving though. There are just a few main things to watch out for when starting out. Diet, aggression (especially when introducing new tank mates) also as you have found out, fry can be vicious to each other if there is any sort of size difference. Ive found its best to keep spawnings that are more than a week or two apart separate. Also if you have to put the breeding net in the main tank try some substrate in the bottom of it so they dont get eaten when the try to sleep.
  23. Stone and water world on marua rd is good for some great looking rocks and substrates. I got these, but they have lots of different sorts.
