I personally do not like people using this site to call for boycotts of particular shops. If you have an issue with them, go and talk to them personally and voice your concerns in a pleasant manner. If you do not wish to patronise their business it is your right but calling for boycotts is counter productive and not what this site is for.

Not seen it myself. I thought microworms required a different culture?

Well done John, very clever of you I sometimes don't bother rinsing the filter wool either, just chuck it. My Scottish heritage comes out I think exhorting me to try rinsing first! :lol:

I used to use a Fluval 303 and now have a 404. I never use charcoal. I bought a huge pile of filter wool years ago. It was sold in a material shop as inner filling for duvets (or dooners I believe for you Aussies) and did cost around $5. This was before the days when it became compulsory to make the stuff fire retardant so I am not sure I would do the same these days! I rinse the filter wool but find I have to replace it every 2nd clean (which for me is about once a year) :lol:

A croc would be more interesting than an eel too. Perhaps it also ate the goldfish!

They are a man-made hybrid and there are a lot of sites out there trying to get them banned. Some fish forums try to ban discussing them. They certainly don't do anything for me, need huge tanks, and are ridiculously priced. They are not on the MAF allowable import list so doubt you could get one.

Bunyip was the word I was looking for. All I could think of was yabbies or yabbas (or was that yobbos?) :lol: and I knew that wasn't right. I don't know what critters you have in wild pond weed over there. Since it was someone's pond.. hmm, I don't know. Wouldn't hurt to sterilise the weed I guess but I am not sure of the best method to do this. Anyone else able to help here?

Powerheads are sold by themselves as a small unit (she says looking at the box in front of her). I have a Rio 600 aqua pump/powerhead but they come in a range of sizes and oomph. I won it at one of the FNZAS conferences but it is still in the box. I think I have a couple more around somewhere. This one has a sticker with $32 on it. Remember I have had this 3 or 4 years so the price won't be accurate. It does not seem to be adjustable but maybe someone else may be able to tell you if others are.

WELL DONE MITCH and Taranaki Club !!! Any other clubs out there want a copy of the booklet? I don't just mean FNZAS clubs either. The booklet gave step by step instructions on how to turn your vehicle into a fish (complete with 'swimming' fins) and a trailer into an underwater scene. All as cheaply as possible! Although you may belong to a cat club or other, it might give you ideas to make something similar but using your own theme rather than fish. Hurry up and get your scanner working Mitch or send me copies of the photos and I will do it for you. WE WANT PICTURES!! :lol: BTW: Our club won 2 Christmas Parades using the same idea. The judges commented that they liked the fact that, rather than just have a vehicle tow a float, we also made the vehicle part of the float.

You need an importer with the appropriate licence to agree to get one for you. Good luck - you'll need it!

Would you ask Alois if he would like to sign up to this forum? He would be able to help the newbie marine keepers. He could put his site as his signature so increase traffic to his own site too. The photos there are fantastic, I imagine the actual tanks are spectacular!

I think on cloudy days they disappear into another dimension! On sunny days they are thickly huddled together in the sunny bits but trying to find any on a cloudy day is an exercise in frustration

It would probably be OK but I don't think it would like being in a tank after having the run of a pond for so long. If you have an tub outside that would be better. Are they sure it is a fish splashing about in the pond? Don't you have critters (along the lines of small Loch Ness monsters) living in ponds and dams over there? If it was here someone would say it was a taniwha and the local iwi would claim the pond Before someone claims racism, I have lots of maori relatives who would see that remark as the joke it was intended to be!

Do you mean Alois Wolloner? I thought it was a female name :oops: Didn't realise they now had so many. It would be great if they would also sign up with the FNZAS as their knowledge would be a marvellous asset. There are too few marine keepers out there. Obviously not a problem in Auckland!

The daphnia will not be floating on the surface they wiggle about lower down. Look on the sunny side of the bucket Mine are growing in a fibreglass pond and always congregate in the sunny patches.

Those airtube rings certainly work and are cheap and easy to make. I have one around here somewhere. As to you being a senior member, have a look under 'The NZ Fishroom website' thread under 'Ranks' and see what you think about the suggestions and ideas about whether we should have 'senior' etc. You make senior once you reach 100 posts (or once you feel 100, whichever comes first! )

The larvae and daphnia can be seen with the naked eye. It may be that conditions where you live are not conducive to growing daphnia without a starter culture. PM me with your address and I'll get some daphnia to you. Or, my son lives in ChCh (St Albans) and is coming up here at the weekend. I could get him to take some back with him for you to pick up if you like. Our club also hopes to make a club trip to ChCh on Jan 11th. We will put a notice in this forum so anyone in the area is welcome to join us for the day.

"It's just a bit too big" Ya think??!! I said you would barely be able to walk through the lounge. Wanting the tank and being able to have the tank are two totally separate things. I am sure we would all like it but I think most of us are as broke as you Warren. So sorry you can't set it up now as I know how long you spent planning and building the thing.
