  1. Oh we gotta have you for real Cees!
  2. That's what my fish book said
  3. Bloodworms are the larvae of gnats and good to feed to medium to larger fishes. They are blood red - hence the name. They live in deeper water than most mosquito larvae and are hard to collect cleanly as they make little dirt cocoons they wrap themselves up in.
  4. The dates are on the main page under Events Goldie. We haven't got a schedule yet as it is too early for stuff to be confirmed. Basically the format is get-together Friday night. Guest speaker on Saturday morning followed by AGM. A few other things in the afternoon, depending on how long the AGM drags on for. Fun evening. Sunday is all fun activities with prizes and raffles (only a few raffles) and a visit to a winery or 2 (or 3). We hope to set up some computers and show everyone this site, how to access it, join a few more up to it, and have Cees run a session for those interested in becoming mods or admins for it. He will also show those interested how to use their club pages and update them etc. That's the plan anyway Perhaps at some stage over the weekend we can arrange a time to be on-line and see if we can break the 'most on-line at one time' record for this forum. We could post to those who belong to the board but are not FNZAS members.
  5. I'm going! We have some interesting things planned for you and yes, alcohol will be featured for those of you who remember the last wine tour here.
  6. I was listening too! It is now 7.42 on Christmas morning. Grant was called out just after 7am!! I have a Fluval 404 so was noting everything you said. MERRY CHRISTMAS (are you going to apologise to the CEO?
  7. Thanks Warren, same to you too. We had an earthquake earlier, just a gentle one. Hope it is not a precursor to something bigger. That would make it a Christmas to remember! Season's Greetings to all

    Availability

Yes Macka we are still hoping to come down January 11th. Will start organising it after Christmas. What are opinions on mixing Malawi and Tanganyikans? The general rule seems to be no but there also seems to be a number of people who have both in the same tank with no problems. Why should they not be mixed? Thanks for the contact offer Andrew. I will see what's available in ChCh first to save freight between islands.

    Tank $?

I recently sold 2 3ft tanks (thinner glass) for $40 each. Bare tanks, no lids.

    Availability

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what African cichlids are easily obtainable here? We don't have anywhere local that stocks them. I am hoping to set up an African tank soon and want to know what I can put in it that is available here, and won't interbreed. I love the yellow labs so that is what I plan to start with. Any suggestions?

    Axolotls

My son used to have a couple of them. Stupid things! If the worm wasn't held wriggling right in front of its nose, it couldn't see it.
  12. Thank you Rob, you have hit the nail on the head.
  13. They have to be smooth to seal properly. Have you cleaned the glass they are stuck to?
  14. And all of us here wish our fishy friends in the States (and elsewhere) a very merry Christmas and don't overdo the eggnog!
  15. I think I have come across the name reisun once before but I am afraid I can't help you re the canister filter, it is not one I am familiar with. Where are you? Are you talking inperial gallons or US? By the way, welcome to The Fishroom
  16. I take oxygen weed from the local stream that runs through one of our parks. Has the water got a good flow? Is there a lot of algae? Has the council sprayed the banks recently? If the water is a bit stagnant, or their was a lot of algae, I would not take the weed.

    Xmas

Merry Christmas to you and the daphnia kellz (and the fish) Merry Christmas to everyone else too
  18. I personally do not like people using this site to call for boycotts of particular shops. If you have an issue with them, go and talk to them personally and voice your concerns in a pleasant manner. If you do not wish to patronise their business it is your right but calling for boycotts is counter productive and not what this site is for.
  19. Not seen it myself. I thought microworms required a different culture?

    Xmas

MERRY FISHMAS to you too john1 and to everyone else. Best fishes for the new year!
  21. Well done John, very clever of you I sometimes don't bother rinsing the filter wool either, just chuck it. My Scottish heritage comes out I think exhorting me to try rinsing first!
  22. I used to use a Fluval 303 and now have a 404. I never use charcoal. I bought a huge pile of filter wool years ago. It was sold in a material shop as inner filling for duvets (or dooners I believe for you Aussies) and did cost around $5. This was before the days when it became compulsory to make the stuff fire retardant so I am not sure I would do the same these days! I rinse the filter wool but find I have to replace it every 2nd clean (which for me is about once a year)
  23. A croc would be more interesting than an eel too. Perhaps it also ate the goldfish!
  24. You might be right Pegasus but I don't think they have any moist grass in Aussie at the moment!
  25. No no, when you die they tell you to go towards the light! (apparently)
