  1. The registering of spawnings is for FNZAS members only. The idea was to encourage members to try fish breeding and to let others know what species were being bred. Encouraging breeding is very important when many species are now banned imports. If you go to this forum's homepage (click on the "fnzas.org is here" at the top of the page) you will find out all about the FNZAS and what it has to offer.
  2. I think you mean drought, not draught. We are heading into one here too - not the whole country though. Our region has regular droughts but this one has started early. Perhaps you could email the German site and ask (in your non-technical German) if there is a translation somewhere.
  3. I love your word - cloggage. I rinse the sponges but felt a quick rinse of the Siporax was in order but perhaps I will not bother. Most of the gunk gets trapped in the filter wool and sponges so you are right, not much gets into the ring things. I vaguely remember the underarm incident as they played it endlessly on TV. Not being a cricket follower I didn't care whether his actions were 'cricket' or not I just wished they would shut up about it! I have never been out of the country myself but my husband was a regular overseas traveller before I met him. He was in Darwin just after cyclone Tracy hit and said the place was unbelievable. I would like to visit the cooler areas of Aussie one day and enjoyed watching Troy Dann's TV programme (he is easy on the eye but would be a lot better if he kept his mouth shut. His sister does not have his terrible accent. Not as bad as Steve Irwin's though). He obviously loves his country and his enthusiasm makes you want to pack a bag and head for the airport to see it for yourself. My uncle lives in Canberra and became an Australian citizen many years ago.
  4. Goldie said 4 weeks, John, in the post immediately before Warren's reply to her. It does get confusing sometimes doesn't it? Keeps us on our toes (or should that be fins?
  5. I actually put in carylnz and it came up with 6 sites - replies to posts in various forums plus a couple of articles. Why it picked some posts and not others I have no idea. Mind you, why it picked any posts at all is beyond me! Big brother obviously hasn't got enough to do!
  6. That was an interesting experience Bill! I put my name in and came up with sites too :-? Don't whether this is good or not!!
  7. I know they say you shouldn't rinse the stuff in tap water but I figure since it is the same water I put in the tank during a water change it can't do any harm. We don't have chlorine in our water.
  8. Congratulations! I don't think you ever stop getting excited when a fish spawns. He can't register them Goldie as I don't think he is an FNZAS member
  9. Possibly would make a difference. What thickness glass?
  10. I rinse mine in warm tap water
  11. Well Goldie I knew it was some sort of supermarket  Sorry to hear it has gone out of business as I only found it last year even though they said they had been there about 8 years!
  12. I have a Fluval 404 and it has 4 trays (if I remember correctly - I don't clean it very often). One has filter wool in it and the others have Siporax. On the rare occasions I get around to cleaning out the filter I change the filter wool and give the Siporax a quick rinse under the tap then change the order of the three Siporax trays so they get rotated. I can't see any point in changing the media except for the filter wool as it gets clogged and is hard to clean.
  13. Thanks Richard. They are the shops we go to as well, plus the one in the Countdown(?) or Pak n Save carpark opposite Science Alive.
  14. Pleased I'm not the only one who only sees an X where your avatar should be! A chillybin also makes a good temporary home, no need to line it either
  15. Can you give me the address for that place? Perhaps we can visit there on our club trip in January.
  16. Try dropping the water level Goldie. If it is fuller than usual you may have a poor seal near the top. Easier than replacing the tank in a hurry. BTW I can't see your avatar anymore. Have you removed it or done something to it? It is also possible you have a small crack in the base
  17. If you are going to use any of the treatments suggested (except salt) don't forget to first remove any carbon you may have in the filters.

Perhaps the offer was made in within the fish's hearing and it was so upset it suicided!
  19. Hi @ndrew welcome to the fishroom. I successfully had Java fern in my goldfish tank. It was good because the goldfish tended to leave it alone - they eat most other plants. Another which was good was water sprite. It tended to float as the fishes pulled it up but new plants grew fast enough to replce the rooted ones which died as the goldfish nibbled away at the base of the stems.

Dennis, the Wgtn shop is called Fins'n' Fangs.
  21. Hi Macka, I wondered where super 12 country was. Is it some sort of football team? You can tell I am totally disinterested in sports can't you? I don't think I could even name an All Black!

    Green water....

3 cheers for daphnia! An easy solution and good to hear it worked so well.
  23. I do hope you meant to TRY a worm culture, not DRY one! Worms like it a little moist.

    Filter help

Hi Shilo and welcome to the fishroom. If we can get them here in NZ surely John1 can also find them in Oz?

    Fishy hello!

Hi Clare, Iv'e been looking at setting up a fish pond for almost 25 years now. One day I will get around to it - or get around to someone doing it for me.
