  1. An update for those interested. We have 44 attending from other clubs around NZ. 48 will be at the Saturday AGM, 52 will chow down at the Bamboo Garden restaurant, 50 will enjoy themselves on Sunday at wineries, breweries, and pubs and travel on a virtual flight, then 54 will tuck into the evening meal at the Beavers Restaurant, followed by the anniversary party at the motel. My lounge floor is covered in boxes full of goods donated by various wholesalers and retailers. ALL SYSTEMS ARE GO!!!
  2. Hi hop2it and welcome to the fishroom. Are you planning on totally restocking from scratch or do you want to keep the existing fish? That Jack Dempsey will limit your choices. How big is it? Have you gone off rainbows? How about adding more of them? What are the fish dying of, just old age? If not, you need to find out what's killing them before you do any restocking. I think a big tank of gouramis always looks good.
  3. Does that explain why you did not turn up at the meeting tonight, or put in an apology? Hmm? Good luck with the corys.

I heard back from Dominique but he does not have them anymore sorry. Look after your two Andrew!

I agree with Warren. Totally inert.
  6. We had a coldwater rock pool aquarium set up and it attracted a lot of attention. We could not keep it cool enough in summer though as the room temp sat around 25C - 28C and this was too warm. They actually prefer up to 15C only. We got our crabs, fish, anemones and shrimps etc from the rock pools down the Kaikoura coast.

    Well, WHERE WAS HE???
  8. We saw it too - very interesting. My boss rang to say it was on, otherwise we would have missed it. My mum has videoed it so we hope to play it at conference sometime for those interested.

If you mean the Pantodon buchholzi - butterflyfish, these are not a community species. They grow 10 - 15cm (according to my book, I have not kept them myself) and prefer a diet of live foods (large ones, won't notice small ones) like spiders, moths, crickets, cockroaches and small fish. These fish jump so need to be in a covered tank.
  10. Thanks Warren but our breeding coordinator is now Chris Brew. His details are in my last post.

I am sure Stanley the knife didn't go around killing people like Mack the knife did! It is an old song I am sure you would recognise if you heard it. Robbie Williams re-released it on his last album of old Frank Sinatra-like songs.
  12. Dear Warren You said you had updated our club details but you have not! Our V President is Julie Huntley, 148 Waikawa Rd, Picton 03 5736714 (no email) Deidre Wells is both secretary and treasurer. Ken is not secretary. Our breeding co-ordinator is now Chris Brew, 11 Faulkland Dr. Blenheim 5788431, [email protected]

Mack the knife! You know the song?
  14. Caryl replied to Aqua's topic in Freshwater
    What about Mack or Spook?
  15. I have been talking to the suppliers about these heaters as they have donated 2 of them to raffle at conference. She said they are a new product and one of the first batches was faulty and was recalled but they have had no trouble with them since.
  16. Congratulations on the elevation to president Mitch
  17. Please note - those of you coming to conference on the Aratere's 2pm afternoon sailing - there will be 25 of you on board. Please make the effort to seek each other out (I suggest the most likely place to find the majority will be in the bar  ) and those of you travelling with first-time conference attendees please take the time to introduce them to other FNZAS members and make them feel part of the group. Mitch, it appears you Mark and Carol are on your own on the later sailing but we won't forget to send someone to pick you up!
  18. Thanks for that information Carla. As an immigrant yourself you would well know what is involved. The FNZAS is made up of 18 clubs around the country. We are all hobbyists wanting to learn about our fish and to help others with their fishkeeping. If you look at our home page (click on the 'fnzas.org is here' logo at the top of the page) you will see our aims. We are just about to have our 50th anniversary of the FNZAS and will celebrate with a party at our conference at the end of the month.
  19. Gouramis spawn on leaves at the surface ywork so fish can eat the eggs from below. Putting a coke bottle over the top would not help in this case. You could try slowly moving a container underneath, so as not to disturb the nest, and lift the lot out. Otherwise I would just leave it and see what happens. If you want to try breeding them, put them in a separate tank, make sure there are leaves on the surface they can use to help hold their bubblenest together and make sure the water surface is calm.

Welcome to The Fishroom oscar sheila. They sure are some tank busters you have there! No wonder you need a bigger tank. Hope you enjoy posting here.
  21. Bear in mind we have very strict quarantine laws here with many fish banned so his selection may be a lot less than he is used to - especially coldwater fishes like goldfish and koi - both banned imports.
  22. We meet on the 21st so I will make sure it is discussed. When I was editor and doing the YB I gave people a cut-off date and if the names weren't there, they didn't go in the book!
  23. Hi Noa, Not sure how to answer your questions as I have not looked at the aquarium trade from an employment point of view. There are certainly a lot of fish keepers here and many own aquariums. You also see them in malls and other public places so there are people who offer set-up and maintenance services. Not sure how much money is in it though, I imagine you won't get rich The economy isn't all that great here at the moment either (by the way, which contry are you from?) but most who come here say they do so for the lifestyle, not the money. If you are going to be poor you might as well be poor in a pleasant climate (that depends on which part of the country you live in too) We have extensive mussel and salmon industries here so perhaps he could branch out into other areas of aquaculture if nothing else is available. Anyone else got anything to add?
  24. We appreciate anything you have done so far and most are well aware of the effort involved. If everyone did their bit things would run a lot better!
  25. It is not 6 months until the next YB is due - it should go out with the August Aquarium World. Since you are about to get this year's capitations, we should get the right list for the right year. Any information you have is already at least 9 months out of date since most club AGMs are in May and allowing 3 months for members to get their As into G.
