  1. A net costs very little. Don't worry as she will produce more every 4 weeks or so. Adding more plants will help too. Have you any spare wool about? You could make spawning mops for the fry to hide in. Get some wool (doesn't matter what colour but green would look better than fluorescent orange ) and wrap it 15 - 20 times around a paperback book. Longwise or widthwise doesn't matter, it just alters the length of the strands. Get a small length of wool and thread it through one end of strands wrapped around the book and tie it tightly in a knot. Now cut through the strands at the opposite end of the bit with the knot and you should have a pile of loose strands held together at the top with a knot. Tease the strands out a bit so they are finer and fluffier and put it in the tank. The fry will be able to hide in it. I tie a small square of polystyrene to the knot end to make it float knot end up and strands hanging down. You may have to push and squeeze quite a bit to waterlog the wool enough to get it to sink at first but it will eventually do so. This might be a quick and easy solution for you. These mops are used by fish breeders with spawning fish like killies.
  2. The fish will follow anyway. You will know if she has dropped (which she may not do all at once) as she will be thinner. The fry will try and hide in the plants or stay close to the substrate for camouflage. Then again, they will also scoot about all over the place and get picked off by all the other fish

    Hellooo everybody!

Hi Laura and welcome to the fishroom. My cat got onto the pooter here tonight and scanned and printed off several sheets of rubbish  .
  4. Just rub standard flakes through your fingers so it is very fine, or seive it through a tea strainer.
  5. Agoh is right about personalities! It is often the luck of the draw. Angels look lovely in hex tanks and some tanks are shorter than others
  6. I don't know of anyone in here who is from Opunake. I know Taranaki has members in Hawera and Stratford but that isn't much help either is it?
  7. The most southern club, and nearest to you, is the Dunedin Aquarium and Pond Society. They meet at the Pet Warehouse every 2nd Tuesday of the month 7pm. Have you thought of starting up a local club? I am happy to help you with doing this, having helped some others already.
  8. Mine only had one of those short fluorescents that fit an ordinary bulb socket. That was so we could see the inhabitants, the inhabitants didn't seem to care.
  9. Perhaps she has post natal depression? How big is the nursery tank? Usually separating them for a few days gives them time to recover before being put back in the main tank but that is usually to rest the female and keep the males away, not to have to keep her away from the males! Hopefully she will settle down again and the tails should regrow.

    Auckland Visit

Our club does day and overnight trips to ChCh to get fish and stuff. We all go in our vehicle (seats 7) and take our own polystyrene containers so everyone knows whose is whose. No pumps etc and it is a 4.5 hour trip home at least. All chip in for fuel costs.

    Hi

Welcome aquagold. It sound like you will fit in here
  12. Mystic's right. Posting tank pics isn't a waste of time
  13. The nets are better than the solid plastic containers with holes or slots in them as the fry can slip through the slots and angelfish can suck fry through the smallest of gaps! If your tank is well planted (especially with Java moss) the fry will have places to hide. Remember guppies will drop a batch every 4 weeks or so, so if they all survive you will be quickly over-run with fry (unless you go and buy more tanks of course). Another name for the guppy is the millions fish - due to its propensity to breed faster than rabbits.
  14. Does it have holes or slots in the base or sides? Baby guppies can swim through some of the slots and angelfish can suck fry through them! Congratulations by the way. 8)
  15. If they are born in a community tank most get eaten anyway so no problem. You sell or give them away whenever possible but one day old is a bit young yet. See if you can raise them to at least 1 month of age before you think about how you are going to get rid of them. You might find they do not survive.
  16. I didn't have my camera then so no pics of it
  17. Male (red tinge) and female rosy barbs from the pool a fry some of the 126 fry feeding Adults with fry
  18. When they are about to drop the other fish really start hassling her as a) they know live food is about to appear b) the males will want to fertilise her again  If I was her I would hide too. As long as there is lots of fine leaved plants (Java moss is great and so is sprite) some of the fry have a chance of surviving. Since you are going to go through this every 4 weeks or so you will get used to it
  19. The fish will get used to the kids (and vice versa ). Did you notice I sent you a PM? I am assuming you know what a PM is  . If not, along the top right of the page it should say "You have 1 new message". Click on it to read. I sent you the name and contact number of someone in your area who can help you.
  20. I have a polystyrene manufacturing plant just down the road. I wander down and they cut it any size and thickness I want Look for a place that manufactures cold storage units (you know the big outside walk-in freezers and stuff). Glenroy Polystyrene is the company that does it here. Try ringing the Antarctic place out by the airport and ask them who supplies it.
  21. Welcome Maxy. Jump in and get your feet wet (don't stand on the fish though).
  22. A tank will not cycle if it just has water, plants and equipment in it, it needs fish or, if you have heard about fishless cycling, it needs ammonia. How many fish did you add? You need to test for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates to tell how the cycle is doing. If you want help from a local I will PM you will a name and number. There is a (former) top guppy breeder living in your area who could be of big help to you. He used to line breed guppies big time.
  23. Try the pea. It may have damaged its internal organs a bit and take a while to come right.
  24. Where I live I can just aim the garden hose in the tank and turn it on. I don't even match temperatures. The fish love playing in the current. I do not add anything to my tank at all and have never done so.
  25. Welcome. How many fish have you added? Do you understand about cycling a tank?
