  1. YOU don't need to do anything. Hope your male is up to the job though
  2. Try following the instructions here... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?t=2406
  3. Both species and surroundings (plus lots of other factors) have an impact on fish growth. Plenty of tank space, well filtered with regular water changes, good quality food (and plenty of it, little but often - especially live) all make a difference in the speed of growth.
  4. I find it rots quite quickly. It is not a true aquatic plant.
  5. Remembr they are very prone to chills so make sure they don't have any drafts near the tank. Also, did you lower the water level? It helps the fry if they don't have so far to swim.
  6. Not normal as far as I know. Perhaps they just took a while to settle into their new home, if they are fine now, and were staying submissive.
  7. I don't think we can use the ammonia in supermarkets as it isn't 'pure' here in NZ. Cycling with fish is not cruel if done correctly. I haven't had to cycle a tank for years mind you as I just run the new filter in an established tank for a couple of weeks before setting up a new tank.
  8. BNs will breed when they feel like it. . Make sure there is a log or under a rock or similar where they can lay and hatch the eggs.
  9. Not sure how many actual Waikato members visit here pol but could you put me, as editor, on your list please? I am supposed to get a copy of every clubs' newsletters but seem to be missing some. :-?
  10. OOh look - fishies!!! Very nice mis.
  11. Oh didn't realise that was you! I will post next week
  12. If she did drop her fry (and quite possible) they could be anywhere - the ones which have survived that is. If the tank is well planted they should have plenty of hiding places. You don't have to "do" anything, except look for the fry. She may need to be separated from the others if she is getting hassled too much by the males (I hope you have a mix of 1 male to each 3 or 4 females). Otherwise, after a bit or R&R she should be ready to go again.
  13. I couldn't see most of those fish in the pic is what I meant
  14. Information can be found here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/events/ Yes there is a club in ChCh and you just missed their meeting (they met on Wednesday). Click on the FNZAS Clubs at the top of the page for more information on affiliated clubs. Our home page tells you what the FNZAS (Federation of NZ Aquatic Societies) is. Registering on this site does not make you a member of the FNZAS, we just run this site. To join the FNZAS you must belong to an affiliated club. Welcome to The Fishroom by the way

    Hello from Dunedin

Hi Heni and welcome. If you do the water changes daily as suggested, I am sure your fish should survive the experience.
  16. Show-off  They are a gorgeous fish aren't they? Shame about their attitude.

Sid had a whole bath full of white worms - a very impressive sight!

That is interesting as rotala is also known as pinetree but isn't as spikey looking as the pic.

A fish breeder of many years standing told me the best container for white worms was an old wooden tea box. The wood allowed the culture to breathe more than plastic like ice cream containers. having said that, I kept mine in ice cream containers with no trouble (most of the time).

What cool pics! Don't know whatthey are but they are commonly found in with white worm cultures and are harmless.
