  1. I have never found my BNs to fight except to chase each other away from food. They are certainly never serious about it and don't cause damage when they do. If they are thinking of breeding they will be chasing each other then the male will be looking for somewhere to look after the eggs, like a hollow log or cave.
  2. Hang On the Back - like Whisper and AquaClear

    Sad Day

Did you buy other kribs at the same time? Just be aware that if you bought a group of fish, they will no doubt be siblings so when one dies, the rest will not be far behind. People sometimes think they have some sort of disease in the tank when all their neons, or barbs etc start dying within days of each other but the other fish seem fine. It is just that they are all a similar old age. Sorry about your fish. One of the fish I lost recently in my thermostat accident was an 8 year old BN.
  4. The gold is just a colour morph so yes, it can breed with the others. It would be good to get a combination that looked like hokey pokey

    Heat Pads

OK, at work at mo but will email you tonight (if I remember). Note that if you burn the house down as a result of your heatpad starting a fire, insurance will not cover you if the pad was not done by a certified electrical worker.
  6. NO do not turn it off! What sort of filter is it? We need to know so we know why the water gurgles. Raise the water level, lower the filter, reduce the air flow. All these are possible depending on the filter type.
  7. Simple box filters will do the job
  8. Welcome Doug. Joining the club would be good - a good source of parts etc
  9. Remember the plants will prefer slightly acidic conditions though

    Heat Pads

My husband has made them, so has Amazonian. I can send instructions if you want but you need to have at least a limited electrician's ticket to put one together safely. You also need someone to heatseal the ends for you.
  11. Gorgeous as always (the fish that is!)
  12. Have you any carbon in the filter? This will quickly absorb all meds so needs to be removed before treatment.
  13. Do not put more than one male betta in a tank.

    gulping kribinses

Check the gills for signs of redness. If it was lack of oxygen he would be at the surface gasping, not on the bottom gulping.
  15. I have only ever just scrubbed rocks before putting them in a tank.
  16. I have been trying to remember abuot hoplo spawning as Denise in Dunedin had lots of them many years ago. I seem to remember she too found a large water change (and slight drop in temp I think) triggered spawning.
  17. I run the energy saving bulbs on my small tanks with no problems. Metal halides are totally different kinds of lights and I thought mainly used by marine keepers.
  18. Rams seem to be particular about water conditions, plus they like a mature tank.
  19. I would think it would work but wouldn't salt be cheaper? Unless it is some sort of porous rock, it will not have absorbed any pesticides so I would think pouring boiling water over it and/or salt, would suffice

    Male GBA

He looks like an alien from the deep! 8)
  21. Aren't they are great looking fish? My daughter outlaw wants one but has to wait until her tanks matures a bit.
  22. Make your own heat pad filling 2L lpastic fizz bottle with hot water and wrap in newspaper or towel. Otherwise, sports and camping shops have them too. Someone here was selling them on trademe at one time I think. Poly boxes - supermarkets, fruit and vege shops, surgeries, vets, labs, (my garage  )
  23. Have they been recently moved? This can upset them when small. Also, how clean is the substrate? May be something there poisoning them.
  24. I don't think the yoyos have been bred in captivity and nobody knows how to sex them. Hoplos are bubblenesters so need calm water for a start.
