  1. Glaziers are a lot cheaper when it comes to making tanks. Of course, you then have to have a stand made, or find something suitable for the tank to sit on (remember they weigh a lot!!). Marines are very expensive to set up and run. They use a lot more power than running tropical tanks. Mostly because they require more equipment and specialised lighting.
  2. Hi and a late welcome from me too (I've been away).
  3. If it is high enough, wedge it under a top brace (if the tank has one) otherwise silicone it to the base and/or back and sides of the tank. You can also silicone or tie it to a good sized piece of perspex or similar then put on the tank base and cover with gravel. The gravel should hold it down.

    Help Please

I too have a heavily planted tank but when I siphon it does not disturb the roots. Indeed, I actually put the whole siphon tube over top of the mini vals with no trouble at all.

    Help Please

You carefully move the siphon around the plants taking care to disturb them as little as possible. You should not have to replant every time you siphon as you should not have uprooted the plant. It pays to not siphon too closely to the plants anyway as they draw the nutrients in through their root system and if you clean too thoroughly directly around a plant you will rob it of nutrients.
  7. At that price, I'd take two!! Trouble is I can't afford to buy a bigger house to put it in so will have to decline your generous offer
  8. May we ask what sort of price a tank this size goes for?
  9. The "Crop" tool is very useful
  10. email them to me if you like tankman and I will put them up for you.
  11. Ah I had someone contact me recently about building cylindrical tanks. I will tell her to contact you. Welcome to the fishroom.
  12. White spot looks like the fish has been sprinkled with salt. I doubt parts of the ceramic media would stick to fish even if bits were floating loose in the water.

I have never found golds to be particularly aggressive. What sex and size are the other two? I have found I cannot keep gouramis and dwarf gouramis in the same tank (although others have) as the dwarfs get intimidated by their larger cousins.
  14. We did a club trip to Nelson to visit our member AMAZONIAN. Here is the link to see his fishroom, fish and tanks http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v144/ ... 0fishroom/
  15. Yeah, what Bill said. 8) By the way herefishiefishie, goldfish have been banned imports in NZ for many many years so they won't be imports, sickly or otherwise.

    Pond Ice

The pond is full - but the level is lower than we would like. We are waiting for the landscapers to install a ballcock under the deck. No hurry though as fish are semi hibernating anyway so we don't want to transfer them to the big pond until it is warmer. Pond has just water in it at the moment.
  19. Make sure you test it works correctly before you go.
  20. Surely there is room on the lifestyle block for a POND!!??

    Pond Ice

I have just noticed, at 4.45pm that there is still ice on a good section of the pond surface! Lovely sunny day though cold. Wok: Grant was going to put his little remote controlled boat on top of the ice then say how he should have got an ice breaker instead  Ira: Be grateful the only piles you have are ones of hail

    Pond Ice

At 11.45 this morning our big pond was still iced over. Thin, but iced
  23. Can't see how the filter cartridge would affect pH. Just reasonably big fish and few plants will change the pH.
  24. If you have a tank with nothing in it but plants and water, it will not cycle if left on its own for 3 weeks.
  25. Swords and platies will crossbreed. Guppies and platies won't, nor will mollies and platies or mollies and guppies. All are members of the Poeciliidae family which are freshwater live bearing fish. This doesn't mean they might not TRY to interbreed. The males are notoriously not fussy what they attempt to breed with.
